I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

To be fair Qatar have done some rainbow stuff, it's generally one guy in a ministry, usually Saudi born and it has done our reputation damage. But this is one person, one opinion. In a country who encourages everyone to live their best life but PDA are not generally ok, holding hands is fine whoever you are.

Hornbostel · 16/06/2022 15:23

Homosexuality is illegal it Qatar. So encouraging people to live their best life, unless that involves a loving same-sex relationship.

I'm sure they have but it's Saudi that's in the international press for this this week. Looks like they hit Claire's or similar.

My previous nanny was a lesbian and they came here to be away from the Phillipines which is mainly Catholic. Yes their relationship was not recognised legally in terms of wills but nobody gave a shit.

@pixie5121

It's illegal to be gay, women are second class citizens...this isn't hysteria, it's completely true. I would question what kind of person can happily live somewhere you could be literally executed for having sex with your partner. Or where being the victim of a sexual assault could see you being charged with a crime and imprisoned.

Let's break that down:

Illegal to be gay: correct in part - male homosexual sex is illegal. It's not illegal to be gay technically but I completely understand why people would have an issue with the country's position on this.

Women are second class citizens - could you elaborate what you are referring to? I'm not saying life is perfect but quite frankly the sexism I experience is as likely to come from a British national as an Emirati.

You could be literally executed for having sex with your partner - is this a reference to male homosexual sex? I'm confused otherwise where you have this from. You can't be executed for lesbian sex in Dubai (not clear it's even illegal at all) and you certainly can't be executed for sex outside of marriage in a hetrosexual relationship.

Where being a victim of sexual assault could see you being charged with a crime and imprisoned - Could you provide a recent example? There were some issues with this a few years back but they've since changed the laws in the areas which used to cause issues. In addition as someone else has said, there is often a massive backstory to the cases you see reported in the UK press. I've known one (not a sexual assault claim) where there was UK press attention and the individual involved was under arrest for serious offenses against children, but obviously that's not what he told the press.

Yes, I meant you can be executed for having gay sex. It's pretty revolting that you acknowledge this and downplay it.

Yep, me and my husband could certainly live our best life out there with our two children!

Figures please. I am not exclusively British and have an EU passport and know thus happens. Never seen executions in the Gulf but seen many disownerahip amongst people I am accidentally affiliated with by EU passport.

SleeplessInEngland · 16/06/2022 15:41

Obscene heat + Kardashian wannabes. Looks like hell to me.

DontBlameMe79 · 16/06/2022 15:47

Not keen on the Middle East myself, including Dubai. I’m told some people like it (true comment I heard) because of the excellent availability of female and trans prostitutes. Only affects a particular demographic of course, but I did laugh.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 15:53

I went on holiday to Thailand. Me and my friend who was a FS Leader were asked to look behind a curtain. A little boy around 5 was being paraded for sex. We were helpless as tourists, took pictures of the man but were told its not regulated I had to hold her back at the police station before she was imprisoned

Hornbostel · 16/06/2022 15:54

I'm sure plenty of gay people give a shit that they they are legally discriminated against.

🤣

I keep forgetting that loads of gay people will be happy that their existence in some countries is illegal

KeepYaHeadUp · 16/06/2022 16:07

Totally agree. It's grim. And people I know who go always joke that they come back paler than they went as it's always far too hot to be outside away from the air con. You couldn't pay me to go there

They probably travel over summer when prices drop if they are saying it's too hot. November to February is perfect weather.

Lordofmyflies · 16/06/2022 16:37

Dubai is a beautiful temperature between Nov and March - 25-29 degrees. For a week in the sun in the UK winter, it's hard to beat. I certainly dont find it 'fake eyelash central' or whatever else people have stereotyped it as. I usually have my head in a book or trying to I'm trying pull my marks and Spencer swimmers out of my crack going after the kids down the water fumes. Certainly not glamorous!!

19lottie82 · 16/06/2022 16:48

I love Dubai, we go 2 or 3 times a year.

These threads always amuse me as it’s obvious that the majority of people who slate it have never even been.

im most likely in the minority but I LOVE the summer heat in Dubai, it’s my favourite time to visit. I’ve visited in November and January and although it’s pleasant, I much prefer the summer time.

19lottie82 · 16/06/2022 16:52

Women are second class citizens

I have never experienced this in my 10+ visits.

Nahnanananahna · 16/06/2022 16:57

I'm not aware of an execution in the UAE or Qatar for gay sex in the last 15 years. I suppose there could have been one for gay rape in the UAE. Has Qatar executed anyone in the last 15 years?

I don't believe for a second there has been, or would be, an execution or even an imprisonment for consensual gay sex.

I appreciate you think it's disgusting I downplay a law that is technically on the books but not actually enforced in practice - your choice. It's something I can myself live with (and I should flag there is a significant and not particularly hidden gay scene in Dubai) but I wouldn't blame anyone for taking a different position on this.

Nahnanananahna · 16/06/2022 16:59

Sorry the 'you' was @pixie5121 who is interestingly ignoring the points where their claims were actually entirely incorrect.

LesGiselle · 16/06/2022 17:00

Amuse Grin There's a fair proportion of people on the thread who have been. I've been eight (thankfully brief) times (not holiday). It's bloody awful. I couldn't wait to get out each time.

And of course, you don't actually NEED to visit a place to find it abhorrent based entirely on its human rights record. A bloody shopping mall isn't going to change anyone's mind if they give a shit about things like that.

Conveniently looking the other way and bleating about glitzy hotels and 'safety' isn't for everyone.

Suchacliche · 16/06/2022 17:08

I have lived in Dubai for 15 years and have never felt like a second class citizen. I actually love the fact that there are “ladies queues”- only took 10 minutes to re-register my car last month.
I have worked in construction and have visited numerous labour camps and worked with labourers- even wrote regulations about living conditions. Things have improved massively over the years.
world cup will be interesting.. it was on the radio today about camping sites being built in the desert for all the fans to stay in……
