To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

No! Used to pay around the same but actually Dubai has rocketed in price in recent years.
Lets be honest it’s a fav place for Towie kind of people- I’m not one but I just want luxury and sun on my holidays- the people on here who claim they wouldn’t go for ethical reasons are lying it’s snobbery, which is fine. Otherwise I can’t think of many places outside of Europe you’d ever visit for “ethical” reasons.

It’s really really not snobbery to not want to support somewhere which has a horrific history of human and woman’s rights

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/06/2022 21:03

I judge (negatively) people who go to Dubai. I used to manage a woman whose dad worked in a senior role in construction in Dubai for a while and the stories he told her about how the migrant (tantamount to human trafficked) workers were really awful.

FFS. This again.

This!!!!

There's one thread a week on Dubai where all the self righteous come on saying it's vulgar and they couldn't possibly go due to their treatment of migrant workers

Yawn - we're not doing great here before you look over your specs at everyone else

Friendship101 · 15/06/2022 21:05

I also love it. The quality of accommodation and the service is better than anywhere else I’ve been. Ive stayed in 5 star hotels around the world but none come close to a 5 star in Dubai. The water parks are amazing, the food is amazing and I’d love to go back

user1487194234 · 15/06/2022 21:05

I most certainly would not go because I object on moral grounds
my money my call
TBF most of my family and friends feel the same

WhiskerPatrol · 15/06/2022 21:06

Clean, safe, great hotels, cheap flights, guaranteed sun, everyone speaks English... So tired of these snobby posts saying "oh I can't imagine why anyone would go there".

PerditaNitt · 15/06/2022 21:08

Most families who I know who travel to UAE tend to go to the quieter resorts in RAK - good weather, decent value, good food (lots of types of international cuisine), generally safe for tourists, good service and nice hotel rooms. Some of the palm hotels can also be peaceful. Jumeriah is for the influencer set I think, so it can be easily avoided. For winter sun, it is cheaper than the Caribbean or Far East.

Agree that it is definitely not the most ethical choice, but putting that aside, I do understand the general appeal

Well I love Turkey so maybe I would enjoy it... for me a holiday is about sunshine, pool, beach, food.

My only gripe really is they seem to have really horrendous views towards women, who are actually quite restricted over there

Whenever I think of Dubai, I see false breasts, false eyelashes, and false teeth, and that's just the men.😉

Seriously if sitting in the desert and staying in luxury at the expense of hugely exploited workers is your thing, go for it. It is not illegal to do so and everyone has different likes and dislikes.

I personally wouldn't go, because it is too far and too hot. Prefer Europe, having done all the travelling I want to in other continents. Short flights and no extremes of temperature are essential for me too for health reasons now.

LubaLuca · 15/06/2022 21:09

I imagine it's because of the perception that it's a luxurious playground for the rich and famous. People want a bit of what they see on social media.

I love the description of it being like the Trafford Centre with the heating turned up 😀I'm imagining Brits traipsing round Dubai with their big coat hung over the hood of the pushchair.

Yes I understand but I take it those that stand by that have never gone and would never go to India, Most African countries, even Poland because of its abortion laws?!

Yes but women are treated like shit in the US too- guess we’ll all stand still.

It’s not quite the same level though - although I haven’t been and don’t plan on going there either!

Neverendingdust · 15/06/2022 21:14

It’s very ‘new money’, in my work I meet lots of people who holiday there regularly and I can honestly say you can usually spot them a mile off. Think big logos, lip fillers, very long acrylic nails, men who wear Gucci cross body bags and sunglasses indoors, their DC wear Moncler coats at 4yr old, you get the picture.

It has zero appeal for me but I can see why it attracts so many, it’s flashy if that’s your thing. I just imagine it’s full of criminals and those with little regard for the little people.

whomoon · 15/06/2022 21:16

At first, I was amazed by the wealth, the buildings, the luxury, but as a woman I was invisible. The local people in the malls were shopping as a family, the women were always walking behind their husbands.
I was visiting with my boyfriend, and i had booked and paid for the whole thing (he obvs paid his half to me), so everything was in my name. I was only ever referred to as Mrs ‘boyfriend’s surname’, if for any reason I was addressed at all.
it was an experience, but not one I’d go back to

Hillary17 · 15/06/2022 21:16

I’ve lived there for a while and it’s a strange place; it’s very easy to get sucked into the luxury lifestyle and your whole whim being catered for. Imagine waking up knowing you have no chores or household responsibilities? Shopping constantly, earning loads of money, no tax. Great food, extravagant experiences. Saying that, there’s a lot of negatives; hidden slavery, bad working conditions, even office workers are working insane hours a day, weird cultural things that don’t make sense, burning hot summers etc. it’s very fake and artificial, nothing is alive and there’s no nature. There’s a lot of great shopping, beaches, perfect holiday destination so I’d go back for a mini-break for sure!

It's the Trafford Centre with the central heating turned up to the max

Haha, yes! 🤣

TheCanyon · 15/06/2022 21:22

I love Dubai as do my dc. My in laws have lived there for 24 years so for us it's about having a great time with family, there's so much to do. I don't get the flashy hype, it's not...

I don't really notice the social media types, except the twats jumping on the beach 1000 times for an IG shot. The only 'celeb' I've seen is Kim kardashian.

TheCanyon · 15/06/2022 21:28

nothing is alive and there’s no nature

really? Al safa, zabeel, miracle garden, butterfly garden just to name a few.

VaccineSticker · 15/06/2022 21:30

Say what you like .,,, but the service you get there is no where comparable with the service you would get on a European holiday. It’s excellent.

MistressOfWaves · 15/06/2022 21:32

it’s very fake and artificial, nothing is alive and there’s no nature.

there’s an excellent reason not to go

Dazedandconfused10 · 15/06/2022 21:35

Grew up there...so, that's why.

The service will always be excellent when you have thousands of underpaid migrants to cater to your every whim, all of which work extremely long hours and live in very questionable accommodation. I wouldn’t want to work there in those conditions.

The rights of workers in UAE are not comparable to those in Europe either.

Mummy7777 · 15/06/2022 21:37

I just got back from Abu Dabhi and I really enjoyed it. So much more calmer, safe and peaceful than Dubai.

I agree it's not for everyone but funnily enough I would rather be there than the UK. In recent years the UK has gone to pots.

When I tried to exchange my money the pound was worth only 4.5 dirhams. The guy who dealt with me explained that the pound was weak and lost value in recent years. I said to him that in 2006 the pound was worth 7.2 dirhams. They even charged an admin fee to exchange!

MyphonedroppedintoColleensboot · 15/06/2022 21:38

I’ll bite
luxury hotels and service
safe to walk around as a woman
no insects (hate the Caribbean for this)
top class horse racing

Some of the hotel staff are pleased to have jobs that allow them to save and send money back to their families. It’s all relative I guess depending on the alternative
