To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

You think people getting deported largely because they never bothered to confirm they were actually British citizens and sort out paperwork is remotely the same as having your head cut off for being gay?

Don't get me wrong - the Windrush stuff is awful. I don't support it at all. But it's not in the same league as Dubai's human rights issues. Just because one country is shit with some matters doesn't make another one squeaky clean.

It's a facile, childish argument. "Oh but what about the issues we have here?" What about them? They don't negate the fact that there are issues elsewhere.

Those that live I'm glass houses.... what about them? Your ignorant to say the least. They don't navigate but you seem all to quick to focus on Dubai which is odd. Nobody is focing you to holiday there if you don't like it fine!

Tell me your experience of 23 years in the Gulf working under your own steam not as a trailing spouse. Were your experiences different? Certainly my time in other countries were hard and mainly from the 9ld guard of Aberdonian engineers who had lived abroad since the 1970s and thought it was a good way to escape political correctness going mad. Nigeria was also not great fun, didn't stay there long. Being a woman 8n industry seemed to give people (men and women) the rage.

Not prosecuting tape victims and gay people? It's PC gone maaad I tell you!

Nahnanananahna · 16/06/2022 13:49

@pixie5121

It's illegal to be gay, women are second class citizens...this isn't hysteria, it's completely true. I would question what kind of person can happily live somewhere you could be literally executed for having sex with your partner. Or where being the victim of a sexual assault could see you being charged with a crime and imprisoned.

Let's break that down:

Illegal to be gay: correct in part - male homosexual sex is illegal. It's not illegal to be gay technically but I completely understand why people would have an issue with the country's position on this.

Women are second class citizens - could you elaborate what you are referring to? I'm not saying life is perfect but quite frankly the sexism I experience is as likely to come from a British national as an Emirati.

You could be literally executed for having sex with your partner - is this a reference to male homosexual sex? I'm confused otherwise where you have this from. You can't be executed for lesbian sex in Dubai (not clear it's even illegal at all) and you certainly can't be executed for sex outside of marriage in a hetrosexual relationship.

Where being a victim of sexual assault could see you being charged with a crime and imprisoned - Could you provide a recent example? There were some issues with this a few years back but they've since changed the laws in the areas which used to cause issues. In addition as someone else has said, there is often a massive backstory to the cases you see reported in the UK press. I've known one (not a sexual assault claim) where there was UK press attention and the individual involved was under arrest for serious offenses against children, but obviously that's not what he told the press.

With everything I've said though, it's not the place for me. I'm a bit fed up of the up tightness of Muslim countries. I'm much more of a South East Asia type. Live and let live. Wear what you want, date who you want and kiss on the streets (if That your thing) I'm so bored of not being able to buy a beer when I want one, to cover my shoulders and legs, to have men glare at you. It's all very suffocating living in a man's world.

I've been in Qatar and that fits with my experience. It's a safe and liveable environment and the actual Qataris are pretty open-minded (more so than the Egyptian / other Arab middle-classes) but there is a heavy emphasis on "respectful" behaviour and not much fun to be had.

The World Cup is supposed to be a big party but they are holding it in a country where people don't like parties. Like having the World Cup on Mumsnet 😂

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 14:11

I'm in Egypt now, everywhere you go there's men, men, men. It's so dull. The only paces where there are more or equal amounts of women is the malls. I suppose they are safe areas with security. I don't venture down town much as its so noisy, and men everywhere. I live in a compound, its very safe. I'm just bored of it. I miss going out and about in the day then finishing off with a few cold beers. I just want somewhere I can walk about without roads like motorways everywhere. I'm sick to death of middle aged men sitting about to fuck all 😂😂😂

How the fuck they thought Qatar would be good for World Cup I don't know. Utter madness.

I don't think the good of the game and the World Cup ever entered into that decision.. 🤔

Lordofmyflies · 16/06/2022 14:23

We go to Dubai in Feb Half term because

  1. The weather 27 degrees

  2. Hotels are wonderful and restful

  3. its as easy to fly to as the Canaries, without the beer/drinking culture in many Spanish resorts. The food is better imo and it feels safer to walk around.

That's still abhorrent.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 14:29

You may want to focus on Pakistan where we have real issues when attending a house fire in the ME and women and girls are locked in. In 23 years in MENA, at least 50% have been British Pakistani

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 14:31

And we lose so many engineers who sat say they are going back to the UK because Qatar is too moderate for their kids. They don't want mixed PE and after school clubs and are shocked that the Mosque are not more involved 😀

There will be riots when the fans realise the cost of a pint! 😬

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 14:34

There really won't. Do you think we haven't planned for these types of people? They will sadly be accommodated. The majority of police on the ground will be British when dealing with their fans.

I haven't condoned it. I also think this law won't be on the books much longer but we'll see.

When you have explored the Amazon, travelled across India and lived a real life I will take you seriously.

Sliceofpi · 16/06/2022 14:37

It’s not jealousy or snobbery it’s a respect for human rights, there is no way I’d go to Dubai and I could definitely afford it.

SweatyChamoisPad · 16/06/2022 14:40

This has solidified why I won't travel, or even transit, in the UAE - it's the 21st century's version of Marbella - www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/11/blacklist-dubai-uae-over-russian-oligarchs-say-ukraine-campaigners

When an attempt at a put down for having a narrow POV actually reveals what a narrow POV really is.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 14:46

You are clearly a narrow born and lived human who depends on peer pressure to say stuff. Many of us have lived and been actual travellers and expats. You are not. Good for you for being happy with your life, nobody should judge you. I have never been a British mum, housewife or worker since uni so I can't say you are stupid, uneducated or sad in the same way you can't call me a slave driver or being obsessed expat. And I hope you can accept me as I accept you and know that a lived experience is real.

Qatar is currently destroying extremely dangerous toys and clothes, they’re dangerous because they’re rainbow coloured 🤣

Yes Pakistan is shit, just as Dubai and Qatar are shit for womens rights. Pakistan being equally as bad doesn’t reduce the horrors of Dubai or Qatar.

News flash - Qatar and Saudi Arabia now apparently the same country.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 14:52

Yes but in Qatar most mums are out working. And girls are at school and the national database ensures they don't vanish from school after 11 and are tracked if they do. What does the UK do to stop child marriage and FGM. Literally nothing

Who/how many people are you talking to here, just as a matter of interest?

You've already said that you only take people who have "explored the Amazon, travelled across India and lived a real life" seriously, which is obviously ludicrously narrow-minded. And very silly. I've lived/worked in more countries than most people I know: I still know that people who haven't lived the same life as me can offer more or just as much.

There was me thinking that travel broadened the mind.
