To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

It's a shrine to excess and wealth, I guess those who think it's amazing like that sort of thing.

It looks all shiny and sparkly from afar & hence appeals to the Insta twunts but, as others have said, it was built by modern day slaves, many of whom died needlessly in dreadful conditions, and that's before you even get to the woeful human rights records of the region.

Not for me.

Do you think the human rights in the workers home country is any better? Do you think the workers in their home country earn the same wage as they do in Dubai? Do you think they afford nice televisions and toys for their kids at home and to even send their kids to school? It's all very well getting upset about it but the truth is they have it better in Dubai than at home.

Onlyforcake · 16/06/2022 09:23

Also I can't travel to Dubai. I'm not allowed to live my life there. Just to be clear. If you put money into that economy people will suppose you support their stance on human rights etc.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/06/2022 09:24

I've had several offers to go there but declined all of these as I don't like what it stands for, the poverty etc.

If you like heat, displays of wealth and treating people badly, good for you.

A schoolfriend of mine lived and worked there (as a nursery teacher) for a few years with her family and is now back in the UK now the DC have gone to uni here and she said she didn't like a lot of aspects of life there, but it was where her DH's job was based so she had no choice (she's Muslim).

User478 · 16/06/2022 09:25

Aren't most of the Influencers out there, out there for "business reasons" -someone on here mentioned the portapotty thing right?

I think you'd struggle to find anywhere to go if you never wanted to travel anywhere with any history of slavery...

I mean one of the reasons DH and I don’t want to go to India (DH is British Indian himself!) is because of how poorly some of the people are treated and how unequal it is. So I don’t think it’s necessarily hypocritical to not want to go to Dubai because of how gay people are treated, or the rights of the workers.

You are missing out on some amazing sights, culture, heritage and food. Personally, I want my DC to know ab@out their country of origin. I don't think I can solve India's vast problems by never visiting.

I don't support or unsupport. I am just not a western housewife who has no idea how the world works and so I let people around the world live. Your invasion of Iraq to make it more like your values didn't go too well did it? And who the fuck would want to live like that anyway? Some people quite like not tripping over homeless people and being constantly ribbed by drug addicts. So you keep your values and we will keep oirs thank you very much. You need a visa to enter the UAE and Qatar. You need a trafficker to enter the UK. You are really not all that. Actually I find it disgusting. Hypocrisy is live and kicking.

A history of slavery, you’re right. But in those places it it history. Dubai is strongly associated with modern slavery. Which is vastly different.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 09:29

Or in unless you are looking for a drugged Eastern European teenage prostitute trafficked from her home country. You have plenty of those.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 09:29

So are you 🤣

Have you ever visited the UK? Where abouts is it that you “ trip over homeless people” and are “constantly ribbed by drug addicts”? As I’ve lived here for a long time and never once tripped over a homeless person?

I don’t think @Onlyforcake is responsible for the invasion of Iraq, personally. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Homosexuality is illegal in the Maldives. Floggings are carried out behind the courtrooms. Doesn’t seem to stop people going there.

Actually what would be wrong with not travelling? We can know a lot about other places without having to travel to them, now. I mean, I could tell you a lot about the surface of the sun, but I’ve never been there.

I was born well outside Europe and travelled extensively in my twenties to a variety of places around the world. But I’m 50 now, with a social conscience, the confidence to make decisions which suit my ethical code, and if I never set foot outside the UK again I would be none the poorer for it. I certainly won’t be judged for not going to Dubai. The blinkered attitude of those who are supporting visiting there on this thread is not a great advert for travel broadening the mind.

No, you can’t, and there are aspects of it I’d like to see, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable with the other aspects of it. Perhaps we will feel differently in the future.

I grew up in the UK. I visit hartlepool, Newcastle, Poole, Southampton and Central London about 4 times a year. I can't believe you have never seen a homeless person. Do you live on the moon?

Places exist in the UK that aren’t inner cities you know.

No, as I say I live in the UK. Just never tripped over a homeless person or been ribbed by a drug dealer (whatever that means).

It's the Trafford Centre with the central heating turned up to the max

😂😂@

Never been, tbh doesn't particularly appeal. A friend of my husband's been and loved it but to be honest he can be quite pretentious. He loved Vegas too....I have been there and hated it.

Gg is a raging homophobe, so likely a fan of the maldives for their anti lgbt laws.
