To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

I guess staff sleeping on the floor is not impossible but I think a lot of the individuals could well be less well heeled passengers who have either been subject to a long delay or are in transit and can't afford a room.

The airport certainly is a major international crossroads and the passengers going through it are not all high rollers and influencers, or even westerners on holiday.

I slept on the floor of a train station in Japan, me and my son cuddled up, he had just been sick all over the floor in the toilets and on the escalator, he was poorly and it was the middle of the night. My husband went off to find us a hotel.

hangrylady · 16/06/2022 08:58

Its not somewhere that appeals to me but I have a friend who loves it. It's just pure luxury apparently (for the tourists and expats not the poor sods that actually live there).

No. I said that those people think they are better than others. They’re not. They need to improve their morals and knowledge. That is all.

The way you spoke about "those people" shows that you do think you are better than them, and to judge people as being fake, shallow, thick tells me a lot about you.

I think I have better morals and knowledge, not that I’m above them. They can improve their morals and knowledge.

@Mercurial123 that's a different issue to the point I was making. I was saying that many other places I visit on business leave me WANTING to see more. Dubai doesn't.

The political and human rights issues will play a part in deciding whether to ACTUALLY go back. Separate point.

Why are you being so aggressive? If it’s not someone’s cup of tea, that’s fine.

Yes I am. I have loads of tickets, was very lucky. And not racist so happy to not hate Qatar. And unlike you, I am there in the actual place.

Not racist to not want to go to a place where homosexuality is illegal.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 09:03

It's the pure ignorance and lazy thicko mentality of trashing something rich because you think it's a popular opinion. But I'm not surprised given the demographic of many on this site. Sad they can't get some education and travel under their belts.

You don’t think there are legitimate reasons to not want to go to Dubai?

It is actually. Ignorance, la,y and frankly a little bit dim. Embarrassing.

How is it racist to not want to go somewhere that criminalises being gay?!

JanisMoplin · 16/06/2022 09:08

Interestingly, India only legalised gay sex in 2018. I am fairly sure many British people visited the country before then. That's the problem with "ethical" travel. Very few countries that are ethical, though I totally agree that some countries are worse than others and I would never claim that the UK is at the bottom of the pile.

To actually answer your question, people like it because the weather is good and the hotels are luxurious - there are many people who like both of these things.

Yeah, but anyone with morals would overlook those two things and not go on principle. And because it is soulless. Looks like Canary Wharf with too hot weather and an authoritarian regime. My idea of hell.

JackieWeaver101 · 16/06/2022 09:09

Those who travel to Dubai usually see Dubai as everything it would like Britain to become. They have no problem with its lack of human rights.

It's why they vote for Boris Johnson and his ilk.

ForestFae · 16/06/2022 09:09

I mean one of the reasons DH and I don’t want to go to India (DH is British Indian himself!) is because of how poorly some of the people are treated and how unequal it is. So I don’t think it’s necessarily hypocritical to not want to go to Dubai because of how gay people are treated, or the rights of the workers.

CounsellorTroi · 16/06/2022 09:10

In Mumsnetworld the one thing worse than going to Dubai is going on a cruise.

That's so not true. Although I think we all feel sad for you that you have no health service and dire education. But I don't think any of us expect Britain to change, what a jolly silly comment.

These issues are worldwide it's not specifically India where do you draw the line? Don't you shop in Primark and so on.

Not generally, no. While no one can be perfect, we do at least try to avoid unethical shopping where possible!

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 09:13

There are loads of countries where its illegal to be gay. Also a lot of European countries have issues with the rise in Neo Nazism, but we are blind to that.

StaunchMomma · 16/06/2022 09:16

It looks all shiny and sparkly from afar & hence appeals to the Insta twunts but, as others have said, it was built by modern day slaves, many of whom died needlessly in dreadful conditions, and that's before you even get to the woeful human rights records of the region.

Not for me.

Hhhdfgjjgggjj6677 · 16/06/2022 09:17

I wouldn’t go there if you paid me , how can anyone visit there knowing the way the treat women and gay people? If you walk around in revealing clothing you will be classed as a “slut” homosexuality is punishable by death ?! Disgusting.

Why are you so angry at people not wanting to visit Dubai? Are you the Sultan of Dubai or something?!
