I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

And to add to that - did you think she lived in the toilet?! She was on night shift and napping during her working hours. Oddly enough the employer doesn't facilitate that by providing her with a bed. Do you think airports in the UK would do?

My team work an 8 hour shift days only. They sleep in stores constantly and it's hard to find people who don't, whether from Kanya or Nepal. We have a zero tolerance as its industrial and hazardous so have a constant turnover. They live in reasonably nice apartments and don't do any other jobs. It's just a culture thing. I have been struggling with this for years and always try to find out if there is anything else going on but there really isn't. And when younfind someone sleeping next to an H2S cage, you can't really say poor dear, they are tired.

Charlize43 · 16/06/2022 08:31

Isn't it the place where so called 'influencers' and Z-listers go to be prozzies?

It has that reputation. I have no interest in going there.

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 08:32

Also, I recall the story of a victim of rape in Dubai, she went to the police (which you'd never do) and told them about her abuser. Everyone was furious about it. It was all over the Internet. It actually transpired that she was a prostitute. Prostitution is highly illegal. She had grievances with her client. Most news story's have additional layers to them. Its very easy to blame the big bad rich Middle East but you follow their laws and you'd be fine. Also when I lived in Qatar there were quite a few guy expats. Generally the expats are treated well and live how they want, it's usually only their own that have to follow the religious laws. Here in Egypt I can go out for beers during Ramadan (in hotels and bars) but the locals would be refused as they have to follow their religions beliefs.

You need to prove you're married to be able to sponsor your partner for a visa, yes. Very common (same in the UK?). You don't need to be married to bring your children over or to sponsor them for visas. You may need consent from the other parent to sponsor, but that's child custody related.

Yes. I mean for us we had to get married to live in Qatar. And the north certificate was obviously to prove he's ours and not some kid we brought with us for shits and giggles. 😂

Surlybassey · 16/06/2022 08:36

OP surely you understand that many are quite happy with super hot weather? Just because it's not for you, everyone is different. It's not my cup of tea (weather wouldn't bother me but far too blingy for my taste) but it's not that hard to see what people like about it based on the fact that different people like different things.

LooksLikeADuck · 16/06/2022 08:36

I've been through airports in lots of countries. Only in Dubai did l see staff sleeping on the floor. It's not normal and it's not ok.

Lovinglife45 · 16/06/2022 08:38

I know several people that have been and they enjoyed the experience. They are not your typical, pretentious person either so it came as a surprise.

The hotels look amazing throughout and fit to be called 4 and 5 unlike many other countries who advertise as such and the bedrooms in particular are standard. My friend stayed in a hotel where bath was free standing in centre of room and the view was absolutely beautiful. I have never had such luxury and have stayed in a number of supposed 4 and 5 hotels in the Caribbean where only the lobby and dining areas look plush.

I have no plans to visit as yet. May go just for the experience. One day......

I guess you are all too high-brow to enjoy something so vulgar.

I love it there 😂

Or we have a conscience. Slavery is fine if you have a nice holiday🙄

Really. I find that heard to believe. In my husbands last job the staff would sleep in the staff room if they weren't busy for a few hours. I've had staff behind money changing counters in South East Asia that I've had to wake up in order to get my money changed. Generally the hotter the country the more likely people are to nod off. Many a hotel I've turned up in to have to wake up the person on reception.

JanisMoplin · 16/06/2022 08:42

If you don't travel to countries that have poor human rights records and rely on tourism, they won't suddenly decide to play by the rules and treat women well. IMO, all that will happen is that many people will starve without an income. Sri Lanka is in deep trouble right now; spending your tourist dollar in Sweden won't make the Rajapaksas suddenly sit up and do everything differently.

No you don't. Otherwise you would be campaigning against your own festering shitpit of a country with all the poverty and exploitation, never mind the invisible homeless. You don't have a conscience, you just read the wrong newspapers.

How do you know they don’t?

I agree with it being vulgar and grotesque. There’s a certain sort of person it appeals to, often those that are fake, shallow, thick and enjoy feeling like they’re better than others.

And you think you are better than those people??? Hmm

No. I said that those people think they are better than others. They’re not. They need to improve their morals and knowledge. That is all.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 08:49

Not to mention the deep stupidity. Imagine how many sunburned pissed morons will be clogging up the non functioning UK emergency departments this weekends. I honestly would be mortified ifni only held q British passport. But at least, rather than expecting people to be cleaners and anything else you so look down on, you just feed and house them for free. Pathetic.

You have to remember that in their home country working conditions are shit, and for a much worse wage? It's not right but they are earning enough money to give their familys a much better way of life.

Flygirl94 · 16/06/2022 08:50

I’ve noticed a lot of people replying saying it’s vulgar, grotesque, would never go etc…….how would you know if you’ve never been?
I say each to their own but there’s a lot of positives to going
flight time not too long, guaranteed weather, amazing things to see and do, great for children, great food!
I like it and i don’t have false hair/nails

I guess staff sleeping on the floor is not impossible but I think a lot of the individuals could well be less well heeled passengers who have either been subject to a long delay or are in transit and can't afford a room.

The airport certainly is a major international crossroads and the passengers going through it are not all high rollers and influencers, or even westerners on holiday.

CounsellorTroi · 16/06/2022 08:53

from what I know, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way it culture or heritage. A lot of UK and US shops and chains - Starbucks and costa everywhere.

Then you don’t know much. I’m not advocating visiting Dubai but to say it has no culture or heritage is just plain wrong.

2 reasons:
guaranteed sun- although I wouldn’t go between June- September
the hotels, you don’t get a bad hotel in Dubai. The service, the rooms are all immense and made for comfort and luxury. I’ve been in a 5 star in Dubai and 5 star in Greece and it’s not comparable at all!

🤣 What a strange comparison! Everyone knows 5 star Greece is more like a good 3.

Ggg626262 · 16/06/2022 08:54

My live in housemaid gets 2 flights home a year. In 3 years she has never taken them, proffering the cash. I asked her doesn't she miss seeing her boys growing up and she said she comes from a different world and that's just how the world is, don't try and make my world like yours because it isn't. And to be honest, I don't think she thinks much of ours

onlythreenow · 16/06/2022 08:55

No. I said that those people think they are better than others. They’re not. They need to improve their morals and knowledge. That is all.

The way you spoke about "those people" shows that you do think you are better than them, and to judge people as being fake, shallow, thick tells me a lot about you.

This is so true. I have visited colleagues in Sri Lanka and India and its basically a breeze block with no ac or electricity. And for me, the smell, the horrendous smell of 30 or 40 people crammed into a 1 room house with no sanitation. It's not for me but at least I have seen it for myself. Both families very proud hosts by the way, proud of their home and keen to share what little they have.

converseandjeans · 16/06/2022 08:57

I can't understand why anyone would want to go there. Too hot & I don't know what there is to do or visit. I would also worry about breaking a law and ending up in trouble.

I read a news story couple of weeks ago about how influencers are going to Dubai. Lots of comments under the story about Dubai Porta Potty. I wasn't sure what they were talking about so googled it and can't get it out my head. Truly gross 🤨
