To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

Dogscanteatonions · 15/06/2022 09:54

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

It’s rubbish in the UK and you never know how the weather is going to be. Rip off prices as well. We went to Yorkshire Dales and Padstow June and August last year. Never again I am afraid. Complete disaster weather wise. And to the OP who says they are spending £400 for 5… really????

Poster forgot to mention it's a Travelodge room on Stafford M6 motorway services.

CruellaDiva · 15/06/2022 12:05

Poster A: I find booking in advance to the Maldives, Caribbean, Mexico cheaper than the UK.
Poster B: but the Yorkshire Moors are so much cheaper!

😐🤦‍♀️

Get some wellies, coats and waterproofs and go anyway! We love a rainy day, less people! Also board games and books are free! I suppose it depends what you like doesn’t it.

That's not a holiday though is it? That's just normal life.

I don't go on holiday to play board games! A bit of Uno by the pool, fine. Sitting inside reading and playing board games is normal life.

stratforduponavon · 15/06/2022 12:07

to the PP who say bring your wellies, waterproofs…just why?

I am sure your kids love you!

😂😂
I’m not going to lie, when I was hard up for money but still wanted to give the kids a break we stayed on a motorway services Travel lodge near Carlisle. I thought it was going to be a rubbish weekend but it turned out there was public events that were free of charge at the castle and the boys absolutely loved it!

LuckySantangelo35 · 15/06/2022 11:55

@ForestFae

what about your kids and partner though? Do you not think they might want something different?

Doubtful. DH hates the heat more than I do, the kids are very much outdoor kids as well. Think they’d be mortified if I booked them into a fancy hotel. The only abroad destinations DH and I want to do are Japan and Norway, but those are for when the kids are older.

I would prefer Yorkshire out of those four destinations!

LuckySantangelo35 · 15/06/2022 12:01

@ForestFae

Cos it’s usually the mums who have to take on the brunt of the cooking cleaning tidying etc

Even if that were true, why would that make someone a martyr for enjoying it? All I see in this thread are materialistic folk being snobby about other people. 🤷🏻‍♀️

stratforduponavon · 15/06/2022 12:10

Purple - I don’t think you are far wrong there!

seriously though. I think I should just leave the people to their cleaning, waterproofs, camping etc and get on a plane. You don’t have to go when it’s scorching hot to say Italy. June is lovely.

you couldn’t pay me to have a holiday in the UK.

That made me laugh.

To be fair there is a middle ground and it doesn’t have to be bare bones cheap or massively expensive, but it what it boils down to is people like what they like and there’s nothing wrong with that!

riesenrad · 15/06/2022 12:13

It's not 40c in Spain atm. It's 30 right now, and that is in SOUTHERN SPAIN. Norther Spain is 28. Quite a bit different to 40

ok maybe not today. It was about three days ago. Can we not split hairs please. A friend was in Seville and she said it was that hot.

Simonjt
sorry a week in Cheshire is not going to cut it for me.
I don’t like sitting by a pool and the cost isn’t everything to me.However I do like seeing different cultures, trying different food that I can’t normally get in sunny Burnley, trying new experiences, even skiing in the summer holidays. I have done this years with my kids and had the Easter holidays and other weeks in the summer holidays to explore the uk.

Neither would I, I was just pointing out that like for like going abroad is often cheaper than a holiday in the UK.

Wexone · 15/06/2022 12:16

I live in Ireland, in what is called the "sunny south east" Its is currently 12 degrees here and up to last week we were still putting the heating on in the eve or lighting the fire to take the chill out. I need heat! Guaranteed sun. You do not get that here in Ireland. If you go away in Ireland you have to bring clothes to cover all weathers. If you go to Spain Italy etc you are more than likely guaranteed no rain, so you can plan to do things, plus you get to enjoy experiencing what a different culture etc another country has to offer and it feels like you have been away forever . Ireland is a beautiful country, with lots to see and do ( all be it expensive sometimes) but only when we get the weather.

I once had a lovely stay at the Radisson hotel in free trade hall in Manchester. Spa hotel so we swam and went to the sauna daily. 5 star hotel. £120 per night. Also had a lovely afternoon tea in the hotel. We went to museums like the Manchester museum of science and industry (great for kids), the people's history museum, imperial war museum, the whitworth. Also went shopping.

SmurfysLaw · 15/06/2022 12:16

A holiday is meant to be about getting away from your regular day to day, it’s a time to relax and have fun. People don’t understand why others want to sit in the sun drinking cocktails. Other people don’t understand why some want to cook, clean and do other chores while on holiday. Different people enjoy different things. Shocker.

Applegreenb · 15/06/2022 12:18

@ForestFae ant recommendations for UK breaks? I have never found any holidays that cheap, wondering if I’m looking in the wrong places

Whammyyammy · 15/06/2022 12:19

UK holidays;
Crap weather.
Rip off prices for airbnb/caravan/hotels .
Rip off prices for food and drink.
Boring.
Cold sea and dirty beaches .

Overseas holidays:
Great weather.
Cheaper than UK based holidays .
Great selection of food and drinks, not ripping you off.
Exotic locations to explore.
Clean beaches, clear warm sea.

British tourist trade is its own worst enemy, I would rather not have a holiday than have a UK one

Artwodeetoo · 15/06/2022 12:20

I like to go on holiday when it's winter here for a break from grey, drizzly and cold weather- enjoy holidays in this country during summer even though its more of a gamble!

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/06/2022 12:21

I like holidaying in the UK but sitting in the sun reading a book sounds like a very boring holiday to me.

When I go abroad it's not to sit in the sun (though not a judgement on people who like that) it's to explore other cultures and things I could never see in the UK.

100% this! ^

CousinKrispy · 15/06/2022 12:22

I go on holiday abroad to see family who live overseas and I miss desperately.

The only break from school that's long enough to make it worthwhile travelling to see them is the summer holidays.

Otherwise I'd much rather go at a different time of year.

jadeyxox · 15/06/2022 12:22

It's not just about weather with going abroad for us though - love seeing somewhere new with a different culture, food etc.

I don't find my garden very cultural and the seafood restaurants in it are limited

Deliveroo from your local chippy? 😉
