To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

Yes, it is lovely here right now - right now. But we did just fairly recently try have s lot of rain. Not so much fun if you book a holiday and it rains every day or even half your holiday. If you go abroad to certain destinations, you’re just about guaranteed beautiful weather.

Thepeopleversuswork · 15/06/2022 09:59

I know what you mean, Britain can be lovely in summer, but:

a) it’s a gamble isn’t it? It can be miserable
b) going on holiday isn’t purely about chasing nice weather. It’s about new experiences, new cultures etc.

Yodaisawally · 15/06/2022 09:59

I want decent weather and I like to travel.

We are stuck with school holidays so we go in the summer.

We had two weeks on the south coast last summer and the weather was shit. Doing anything inside for entertainment is stupidly expensive.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/06/2022 10:00

It’s nice right now but England is hardly renowned for its consistently good weather

People want escapism, culture, food, scenery, weather, warm pools, experience different language, sightseeing etc etc etc

Is that really difficult for you to understand….?!

CloudPop · 15/06/2022 10:01

We have had a couple of decent days in amongst many many crappy rainy ones. There is no way of predicting when the good weather will come.

Misaki · 15/06/2022 10:02

Maybe some people just like different things? Or want to see more of the world? Not everywhere is hot this time of year.

PinkyFlamingo · 15/06/2022 10:02

Britain is lovely in the summer

Britain is not just England you know, I want 2 weeks of guaranteed sunshine which is neber going to happen here in the West of Scotland. Surely thats not too hard to understand?

bumblefeline · 15/06/2022 10:02

The weather is too unpredictable here. It's going to chuck it down here at the weekend.

I like scorching hot weather and swimming. I can't do that here.

I don't understand what you don't understand about people wanting to get away from this shitty country in the summer?

HeddaGarbled · 15/06/2022 10:03

For me, it’s staying somewhere with an outdoor pool. Sadly, I don’t have one in my back garden ☹️

Shoxfordian · 15/06/2022 10:04

Last summer was really rainy and cold so yabu to think it’s always nice weather in summer

There’s more to travelling abroad than weather anyway

WalkingOnSonshine · 15/06/2022 10:04

We’re having a lovely UK beach holiday right now, but I could have got the same holiday half price in Spain or Turkey with consistent weather.

We came to the same place last year and we were stuck in storms in May.

We are more than likely to go abroad next year.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/06/2022 10:05

If we knew that June, July and august would be at least 80% guaranteed to be sunny, warm and not raining then I'm sure people would choose other times to go abroad- but it's far too unpredictable

thelittlestrhino · 15/06/2022 10:05

Today is nice. Saturday was extremely strong winds and torrential rain here in the afternoon. Sunday was similar. Rinse and repeat all summer... Absolutely no guarantee of consistently nice weather that you can plan ahead for.

Scianel · 15/06/2022 10:06

Because I like guaranteed heat and Mediterranean scenery. Because every actually nice bit of the UK turns into a traffic jam in decent weather.

LakieLady · 15/06/2022 10:07

I think it depends what you want from a holiday.

If you want cheap booze and to lie by a pool/on a beach, the UK is not your best bet.

rainbowandglitter · 15/06/2022 10:07

Because we hardly get any nice weather here. We can't swim in the outdoor pool or swim in the warm sea here. Sitting in your back garden is in no way comparable to a holiday abroad in the sun Confused

ForestFae · 15/06/2022 10:07

I know what you mean. I remember having a chat with a bloke who loved all inclusive in Egypt and said “you don’t have to leave the hotel it’s great!” and I said what’s the point of flying all the way around the world and never leaving the hotel.

even then, I prefer UK holidays. The UK is a beautiful country, full of history, folklore and wonderful nature. I don’t go abroad.

edwinbear · 15/06/2022 10:07

Because I plan and book my summer holiday c.6 months in advance. I've not yet found a long range weather forecast that goes out as far as 6 months. Plus scuba diving in the UK is nowhere near as much fun as diving in the Maldives/Mexico/Caribbean and I like DC to have the opportunity to practice their Spanish. Also the cost of UK holidays is ridiculous compered to going abroad.

MaChienEstUnDick · 15/06/2022 10:08

It's 16 and pissing rain at home right now. I'm sitting by the pool doing some casual mn-ing in my pants on holiday. I know where I'd rather be!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 15/06/2022 10:08

Wow well good for you.

Not everyone lives in a pretty little village with a garden. Not everyone has the luxury to choose when they go away and have to abide by school times or shared parental time. Not everyone is willing to put your faith in the British weather.

What is with this influx of ‘because I like to do X I literally can’t understand why others might like to do something else’ posts??

Lollypop701 · 15/06/2022 10:09

The uk is expensive and weather not guaranteed. Although we have a caravan too so we’re very lucky

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/06/2022 10:09

I don't find my garden very cultural and the seafood restaurants in it are limited

Blueshimmer · 15/06/2022 10:09

Because I don’t go on holiday just for the weather - I can’t very well see the sights of Barcelona or go climbing in the alps while sat in my village can I? And since we’re tied to school holidays, work requirements etc, summer is when we can do stuff.

Besides, while it’s nice and sunny here today this time last year the weather was absolutely torrential rain (I know, because we tried to take a “holiday at home”) so unless you’re one of those lucky and unusual people who can just take holiday spontaneously just because the weather is nice, you’re gambling on the weather.

Is it? I’ve found UK holidays really cheap, we’re going away in about a week, for a week, for £400 for 5 of us. I don’t see that as costly and certainly not more than abroad! I’ve booked weeks away in the uk for £200 for us before too.

TheRoadToRuin · 15/06/2022 10:10

Prior to lockdown my last main UK holiday was a fortnight in Cornwall in 1978 when it rained solid for 14 days. After that I went abroad.

In two years of not travelling abroad I have had lots of UK holidays. Not once have I had glorious sunshine. Sometimes a good day or two, often wind and rain.
Also pollen and hay fever.
I do like the UK but it costs more than going abroad and it's a different kind of holiday.
You have to pack everything from raincoats to shorts.
So far this year I have been to the Canaries - 7 days of warm sunshine, not too hot, no flies, no pollen.
3 days on the Yorhshire coast. Perishing cold and windy but dry.
3 days in the Dales. Rain on one and dry but cloudy on the other days.

In future I plan to go abroad for main holiday in May and October and short breaks in the UK in between but never for more than 3 or 4 days.
