To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

It's not just a choice of a darling cottage in devon/cornwall/the lakes or sitting by a pool in Benidorm drinking lager for a fortnight you know!
We got to Portugal every year and stay in houses or apartments away from the main parts. We book flights, then find somewhere cheap on Booking or something. Having warm weather, the sea and relaxation is why we do it

It's not just about weather with going abroad for us though - love seeing somewhere new with a different culture, food etc.

Us too, we like both hot and cold holidays. We’re off to Ottawa in August, I’m going there for sport, but we’re making a holiday of it as well. A few weeks ago we went to Sweden for a long weekend, we went to Paris last weekend.

Next year we are thinking of going to Iceland if we can afford it, if not we’ll likely not go on holiday and save up for longer, or go on a shorter break to a European city.

LexingtonsHome · 15/06/2022 12:26

Its nice today, but Sunday we'll be back in jeans according to the app on my phone. I like going abroad for the guaranteed weather, time by the pool with the bar close at hand, interesting food options and sea breezes making the heat much more pleasant.

AnnieSnap · 15/06/2022 12:26

DH and I prefer to go away in autumn or winter and enjoy (work in) our garden in the summer. We are thankfully, not constrained by school holidays though.

Poster A: I find booking in advance to the Maldives, Caribbean, Mexico cheaper than the UK.
Poster B: but the Yorkshire Moors are so much cheaper!
😐🤦‍♀️

@CruellaDiva

I would prefer Yorkshire out of those four destinations!

😂 Oh come ON! FFS who are you kidding? Yorkshire is a lovely place, full of lovely people and interesting places to visit, but to say you'd prefer a holiday there to the Caribbean, Mexico, or the Maldives is just laughable.

'SO Mrs Fannyfart, you have won a prize! Would you prefer a trip to Cancun, Mexico, all expenses paid, flights and transfers, full board, a villa for 6 people for ten days Or a week in Sheffield? I can't even!!! 😂😂😂

j712adrian · 15/06/2022 12:27

Correct. Take Madeira for example - it's lovely November to February.

And cheaper.

19Bears · 15/06/2022 12:29

I HAVE THOUGHT THIS ALL MY LIFE!!!! I'm not a holiday person anyway, and don't think I would enjoy 2 weeks lying on a hot beach with millions of other people.... But the point is, why do people want to go away when it's the summer here? Surely you have the summer here, and then go away either after summer is over and it's still hot abroad, or before. I mean, you wait all year for summer to come round, then off you go somewhere else!!!! Invariably to be stressed out in a hot airport with ten thousand other stressed people. Why??!

CruellaDiva · 15/06/2022 12:29

@ForestFae You’re not a martyr if you enjoy that kind of a holiday.

I may have misunderstood but your post but to me it seemed like you were saying why go on a long haul beach holiday when you can go to Yorkshire for less? I was just trying to say that you cannot compare a beach resort on the Maldives to a cottage in Yorkshire.

like others have said different people want different things from a holiday.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/06/2022 12:30

My friend has a caravan on haven site its £1300 for a week in august

Bloody hell, I spent a month travelling around Peru for cheaper than that (including flights).

I wish those in the north of England and Scotland would stop patronising those of us who live in the south.

I have frequently gone on holiday in Scotland, Northumberland and went to Belfast earlier this year. And have had good to glorious weather in all of those destinations (yes the odd bad day but not that many and certainly not enough to put off a return).

Maybe we wish those in the south of England would stop telling us about our 'glorious' weather when I live here day in, day out, and can count on one hand the number of warm sunny days we've had this year. And by warm I mean about 18 degrees. Think we've had one day it was over 20. Lucky us!

RaspberryParfait · 15/06/2022 12:30

We are currently on our last day of a 10 day holiday in Turkey. AI for 5 of us in a 4 star resort was £2700 including flights and transfers, 2 rooms, balconies, daily bed sheet change, room slippers, daily mini bar refill, pool towels, sunbeds, an amazing breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet, 2 a la carte dinners each, 24 hour unlimited hot and cold drinks, cocktails, branded booze, afternoon snacks, midnight snacks, ice creams, private beach with jetty, massive pool, gym, really good entertainment during the day and evening. Really clean as well.

We still have over £500 left out of £1k spending money and most of that was spent on shopping, the £100 we spent for all of us on a 7 hour boat trip taking in 5 separate swimming and snorkelling areas, beautiful scenery and crystal clear water teaming with fish. That also included a cooked lunch. Oh and the Turkish bath and one hour massage with whole body clay mask for DH and I.

Its been around 35 degrees every day apart from one rainy morning.

Wonder how much that would all have cost in the UK? Just the food and drink would have been a couple of hundred £ a day if eating out and a holiday is not a holiday if it’s self catering IMO.

Purpleavocado · 15/06/2022 12:30

It depends on your circumstances. We go in June or September as we don't have to worry about school holidays. We like to go abroad as we love All Inclusive holidays. I do not want to cook on holiday.

I would pick Yorkshire over those, most aren’t safe for queer people, apart from the odd island like St Martin for example.

Louise0701 · 15/06/2022 12:31

Because there is so much more of the world to see and experience.

Totally agree with this!

yeah the Yorkshire moors are nice as are the little villages but cannot compare to somewhere like Barbados for a holiday

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/06/2022 12:21

I like holidaying in the UK but sitting in the sun reading a book sounds like a very boring holiday to me.

When I go abroad it's not to sit in the sun (though not a judgement on people who like that) it's to explore other cultures and things I could never see in the UK.

I don't know anyone who DOES just sit in the sun reading a book when they go abroad. Confused Maybe for SOME of the time, but many people explore, go on daytrips to other towns and villages, and go shopping, clubbing. for meals out, sightseeing around the area etc etc...

When we went to Gibraltar some 7 years ago, we went on a trip to Tangier from there. Not only a different town, but a different country, and a different continent! We also had a trip to Malaga . Where else are you going to go to if you go to YORKSHIRE? Week in Sheffield, with trips to Halifax and Leeds? PMSL! Grin

Louise0701 · 15/06/2022 12:33

@Simonjt having lived in Sheffield for most of my life; I can say with certainty that there are times it isn’t safe here for queer people too! Speaking from experience of a very close family member and having gone through secondary school here.
Anyone who would rather spend a week here than in the Caribbean must need their head looking at!

Othersideoftheagean · 15/06/2022 12:33

I think loads of people have completely missed OPs point. OP isn’t saying why bother going abroad at all. Loads of people constantly moan about the weather in the UK and then disappear abroad when UK weather is at its best. It makes no sense!

I’m with you OP we do all our abroad holidays sept-May and the spend June, July and august in the UK. I will never understand why people go abroad during the summer. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Hellsbe · 15/06/2022 12:33

You’re a funny one op. Sitting in the garden on a sunny day reading and sipping something cold is a perfectly lovely thing to do.
it’s in no way comparable to holidaying in the med though 😃
The different food, language smells and sounds are what I love about being away from the UK.
sitting in a beachside restaurant eating fresh seafood and drinking wine while listening to the waves in the sunshine does not remotely compare to what you’ve just described.

Kanaloa · 15/06/2022 12:36

I grew up in Scotland and now live in England and have never experienced this ‘glorious’ summer that’s just as beautiful as going abroad. I’ve never ever in my whole life experienced a week in Britain where we are guaranteed weather warm enough to splash in the sea every single day from morning until night.

Also, how do you know people don’t do both? A week abroad doesn’t mean you can’t go away for a week here.

notacooldad · 15/06/2022 12:37

Neither would I, I was just pointing out that like for like going abroad is often cheaper than a holiday in the UK.
Sorry Simonjt, I misunderstood you.

it’s clear that some people like packing their wellies and board games, some like hot weather and pools, others like exploring and seeing different places.
There is nothing wrong with any of those choices. What is baffling is the OP claims they can’t understand why people want to go abroad in the summer holidays ( another reason I have is to see my family). What is also baffling is the sneereness of other peoples choices.
I can’t see why it’s even a debate. As my kids now say ‘you do you’ 🤷‍♀️

PurpleButterflyWings · 15/06/2022 12:37

@Simonjt as a pp said, Yorkshire is full of dangerous places for you too. And there are many places abroad where you will be perfectly safe. Others where the treatment is horrendous, but many lovely accepting places overseas...

Kanaloa · 15/06/2022 12:37

As for the ‘enjoying our garden/local areas’ it shouldn’t be rocket science to figure out not everyone has that. People living in built up areas won’t be enjoying even the hottest day in the same way you would living near the beach. I mean lying in a local park in Salford isn’t quite the same as stretching out on a beach in Greece.

Hellsbe · 15/06/2022 12:39

Oh and Britain is generally crap in the summer. People getting giddy because we have a few days of weather the 20’s.
it’ll be pissing down in a few days😀

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 15/06/2022 12:39

We love a UK holiday, loads of great days out to be had... but it's just nice to go somewhere that's further from the everyday. We're not lying on the beach types, but I can see that miles of clean white sand in guaranteed sun, might have more appeal if you do. You just can't replicate city breaks either, if you want to visit Venice and ride a gondola, see certain exhibits at international museums, eat local food, well you just can't imitate that. The idea of having a few days away from your usual routine is nice too. Even if you're staying self catering, it's popping to Carrefour and finding new treats instead of picking up the usuals in Morrisons.
