To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

Dogscanteatonions · 15/06/2022 09:54

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

Get some wellies, coats and waterproofs and go anyway! We love a rainy day, less people! Also board games and books are free! I suppose it depends what you like doesn’t it.

That's not a holiday though is it? That's just normal life.

Exactly, thats a normal weekend rainy day thats only one step up from doing nothing.

Of course you can get 2 weeks camping in some sad spot of England where you have to sit inside for half the time playing sad board games cos it’s raining and the kids are miserable as nothing dries out properly and you’re doing all your own cooking and cleaning and sleeping like shit but it’s ok because England is SO beautiful and you’re SUCH an outdoorsy family and it only cost £25 for the 2 weeks and your children always say it was SUCH a better holiday than their mates who went to Tenerife instead.

Newsflash people like different things and that's ok

It’s in a different location - where I live, you can’t walk along the beach collecting shells because it’s all fields and trees

@ForestFae

who the fuck wants to sit inside and play board games on holiday!?

i want consistent sunshine, to experience other cultures, lovely food, local drinks, etc etc. Basically a change from what we have at home in the UK…it’s so refreshing and travel really does broaden the mind…you should try it sometime!

Mumsnet struggles massively with this concept - if you’re not a girl bossing CEO that likes spa days and shopping, you’re Doing It Wrong.

@MistyFuckingQuigley butlins and haven aren't cheap
My friend has a caravan on haven site its £1300 for a week in august

They don't deserve any custom charging that.

Exactly this. ^ You can stay at home and pay fuck-all to sit inside and play board games and fucking charades!

Jaxhog · 15/06/2022 11:52

Going on holiday to enjoy finding out about another culture, scenery etc. - Yes. But summer is rarely the best time.

Going on holiday to get pissed and lie in the sun - No. Why would anyone want to do that?

I don’t like the heat, and I like exploring the history of the UK - ruined castles, old battle grounds, the architecture, the myths, the little villages, the hikes, the beautiful scenery…it’s okay to like different things. I’ve travelled extensively as a child and teen, it’s okay but it’s not for me. Prefer the UK, genuinely.

I disagree, if you’re not sitting inside not spending your money, not having fun, not spending time with friends then that’s how to do it. See any wedding thread or thread about spending your own money on nice things and it’s full of competitive misers moaning about anything.

(Ps, I hate shopping and spa days)

i think it’s just that there is more than a touch of mummy Martyr about those women who claim to love that kind of holiday where they are cooking and cleaning and washing just as they would do at home.

BadAtMaths2 · 15/06/2022 11:54

I like going abroad outside of school holidays, it's cheaper, quieter, and the weather is better than it is in the UK at that time (obv depending where you are going).

I like May onwards in the UK as the weather can be great and I like messing in the garden and it's a pain to find someone to look after the greenhouse in the summer if we are away.

See the people who can’t imagine that holidays in the uk, particularly camping holidays, can be genuinely fun, and the posters that wouldn’t go anywhere without being catered to by a cook.

How the hell is enjoying camping being a mummy martyr? Only on mn.

what about your kids and partner though? Do you not think they might want something different?

TheOriginalClownfish · 15/06/2022 11:57

Well, I live in Ireland. You might know it. Small green and very wet place to the left of you on the map.

That's why I go abroad.

And also the last time I did a staycation it cost me just as much for two days as a week in Spain. And it pissed rain the second day so I was cold and wet. In August.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 15/06/2022 11:58

Because if I go away in the U.K. I want my accommodation to be of a similar standard to my home because what’s the point otherwise. I don’t live in a massive house but UK holiday let’s for 4 people with enough comfortable seating for those four people are at the pricier end of things. I could stay in no end of places with one double bed and a fold out sofa bed and an armchair for a reasonable sun but tbh that sounds shit. Combine that with the variable weather and I’d ask the question, why does anyone stay in the U.K. for their holidays?

stratforduponavon · 15/06/2022 11:58

It’s rubbish in the UK and you never know how the weather is going to be. Rip off prices as well. We went to Yorkshire Dales and Padstow June and August last year. Never again I am afraid. Complete disaster weather wise. And to the OP who says they are spending £400 for 5… really????

brookstar · 15/06/2022 11:59

ForestFae but what does that have to do with women that work?

I think most people can imagine what a camping holiday in the UK is like and they can decide if it will be fun for them or not.
Lots of people want a break from cooking and cleaning which is why they don't want to do a self catered holiday.
We always do a few UK breaks a year which are great ( no camping for me though) but they are rarely relaxing as they tend to be activity based. The summer holiday abroad is where we really recharge our batteries.

Friars23 · 15/06/2022 12:00

U.K. weather in the summer is unpredictable. My sister was in Cornwall last week a lot of rain and grey skies. This week warmer.

Cos it’s usually the mums who have to take on the brunt of the cooking cleaning tidying etc

balalake · 15/06/2022 12:02

I am not alone in having family and heritage from outside the UK. This year will visit an ancestor's grave having found out where it is.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/06/2022 12:03

Summer is mostly not lovely in many parts of the UK!
