To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

Dogscanteatonions · 15/06/2022 09:54

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

Being an English sun seeker is a curse! Should have been born Spanish. Would love to enjoy summer holidays here but it’s just not hot enough or reliably sunny. Yesterday was lovely today it’s raining and 16 🙄

Parky04 · 18/06/2022 12:21

When the sun is shining then the UK is a great place to go on holiday. Unfortunately, the sun doesn't shine very much! I have just got back from Dartmouth where I spent 5 days and the weather was glorious. One of my best holidays! If the weather had been miserable then it would have been a completely different experience!

Feelingoktoday · 18/06/2022 12:32

My partner is in Mablethorpe today and it is raining. He is on a holiday park with his family in a caravan.

I’m sat in the garden in the south east and it’s very hot.

the U.K. is gorgeous. But the weather is too variable in the summer for my liking. I like to sit out late into the evening with a glass of wine on holiday. That only happens 3 or 4 times a year in the SE.

Hellsbe · 18/06/2022 15:24

From lots of previous posts and indeed previous threads about holidaying in the uk, it’s pretty clear that it’ not only the crap weather in the uk that stops many of us from taking holidays here.

it’s the cost of things like parking, bad service in bars and restaurants and overpriced food and drink. At best it’s a pretty mediocre experience for many of us.
It’s a big world out there. Lots of amazing places to experience, lots of fantastic beaches and food and walks etc.
Life is far too short to spend all of your leisure time in the country that you live in!
Cheap flights have made travel so accessible. I bloody love it. Long May it continue!

JemimaPuddlegoose · 19/06/2022 13:13

Agreed, I don't like sun all that much, but the UK is so insanely expensive and the food and service is often bad. I wanted to see sharks and found that it was actually significantly cheaper to fly to South America (flights £300, basic hotel £12 a night, fancy hotel £30 a night) than to take the train to Cornwall, stay in a hotel there (even Premier Inn can top £100 a night) and do a shark excursion there.

Obv distance and environmental issues are factors too, but the UK is just too expensive for what you get.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 18:22

@TheSummerPalace Yes that's a big difference- in Greece you don't tend to eat before 9pm due to heat - and then it's sunset, terraces , live music or a chill out set and just a damn site more holiday feeling than trying to find a chip shop still open-like you, that doesn't cut it for me- I live in Windsor which obviously is touristy and can get a perfectly nice meal at 9pm at Bills or The Real Greek or something, so I'm buggered if I'm paying more to go away and actually have a lesser experience than home.

You’ve certainly changed your tune OP since posting yesterday

Absolutely fed up of next doors dogs incessant barking, her kids awful grime music and her screeching voice. Oh and why must everyone decide to do all the loud gardening when it's glorious?

on a thread about NOT being able to enjoy your garden

😂

It really made me chuckle when I saw it and randomly remembered her starting this thread!

Just come back from Majorca - it's really not just the weather- hotel was well staffed and lovely people- housekeeping impeccable, food quality ( non hotel) top notch and very affordable. Good bands and pianists on beautiful outdoor terrace every night too and a really good G&T at 6 euros. Hotel didn't feel they were doing you a favour by letting you stay. There are far too many coastal hotels and apartments dialling it in in the UK - at all price levels.

Where is that?

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/07/2022 11:13

Because the world is a beautiful place and people want to see some of it?

we stay home every year now but widely travelled when we were younger. Wouldn’t have missed any of it.

each to their own.

@Dogscanteatonions Desperately moaning about her neighbours and how she is not enjoying her garden

Bayleaf25 · 15/07/2022 11:57

Because I don’t go on holiday just for the sun (although it is a bonus). We go because we enjoy exploring new places, different wildlife, scenery, culture, foods etc. Money is our main restriction otherwise I’d go to different places every year. I enjoy exploring the uk too but at 50 I’ve seen quite a bit of the UK and want to explore other countries too.

CheshireCat1 · 15/07/2022 13:17

We’ve had all our holidays in this country for the last three years. We’ve found wonderful places, gorgeous deserted beaches, great scenery and we always drop on the good weather. Also it’s a bonus as our dogs can come with us. Just booked another beach cottage.

Ohthatsexciting · 15/07/2022 14:59

Oh shame
really wanted the op to come back

she is probably on holiday abroad! 😂

Hellsbe · 16/07/2022 08:08

That’s really funny!! Going to check out the thread!

SortingOffice · 16/07/2022 13:31

Of course you can do it cheaper in the UK but I don't consider it a holiday if there isn't a bit of luxury involved.
I had a week in Lanzarote in April. Very nice hotel, best rooms which were a suite with sea view and patio.
Just had five nights in Norfolk which cost me almost as much but in spite of picking the best hotels I could find they were not in the same league as the Spanish ones. We had good weather but no pool of course.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/07/2022 14:50

@SortingOffice - I agree- I'm kind of with Jeremy Clarkson on this- unless you are compromising because of young kids then why go somewhere that's shitter than home!!!

Blaggertyjibbet · 16/07/2022 15:16

It‘s because summer holidays are the only time when families can enjoy a proper long-haul trip without the children being jet lagged for several school days afterwards.

thefamilyupstairs · 16/07/2022 15:17

Some parts of the UK the weather is consistently crap. We aren't all experiencing a heat wave. I priced a caravan in Dorset for the first week in July and it was cheaper to go abroad. I'd like to holiday more in UK but can't justify the cost.

Soubriquet · 16/07/2022 15:20

Abroad has better air conditioning, you don’t have to cook, and there’s a pool.

@Dogscanteatonions no comment then have you ??

Lincslady53 · 18/07/2022 09:13

My memory is burnt with a 2 week holiday in the school holidays. 50 odd years ago. 2 weeks, in a caravan, in Ingoldmells. I remember the stinking drainage, and spending much of the week sheltering from the rain in the on site cafe, playing Mike Sarne and Wendy Richards singing 'Come Outside' on the juke box. Our honeymoon in August 77, in Devon cos we had just bought a flat and couldn't afford anything more, was marred by rain. ( and Elvis dying). In 76 however, we had the beautiful hot summer, so we went to Lake Como in September. My first holiday abroad, and it absolutely peed down all week. So since then, when financed have allowed, we have looked for holidays in areas where rain is unlikely. As a couple we can always find things to do, but if you have children with you it spoils a long awaited break. Add in that it is often no more expensive than a holiday in the uk, and it is obvious why people go abroad to me.
