To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

They’re not interested in going either - they’ve never asked to. DS1 has even said he doesn’t like the idea of flying. It’s not some sort of requirement to go abroad. You seem particularly adversarial towards me, is there any particular reason you take such offence to the way my family chooses to do things?

You're just very contradictory ( and come across as REALLY judgemental sometimes). I'm not offended by how you choose to do things but i do take issue when people judge others.
You challenge others but get very defensive when people do the same to you.

I’m not defensive about anything, I just find it funny when people’s reaction Is basically “how dare you raise your kids away from consumerism and material rubbish!” when the way I raise my kids is closer to the way humans have been raised for centuries and the “normal” ways being touted are very modern inventions in terms of human history.

Where did I say anyone else’s are shit? I said I don’t like it. Then loads of people said my kids are missing out because we go camping lmao. So no, it’s not be being the arsehole here.

  • Nice weather is far from guaranteed in the UK
  • People with children are restricted to going away during school holidays, and most people can't afford more than one holiday a year
  • Some people enjoy experiencing new cultures, food, surroundings, sightseeing etc
  • Not everyone who goes abroad during summer is going to hot countries. Plenty of people are holidaying in northern Europe where the weather's not much different, or sometimes actually worse, than it is here

No. I live in a lovely village but it lacks a warm sea to swim in, or any sea for that matter. Also, I am one of those people who loves really warm weather.

Sceptre86 · 16/06/2022 13:53

Its great where you are but it isn't in the whole of the UK. I'm in Scotland and the day started off sunny and warm (16 degrees) it's now cooler and overcast. We go away in the Summer aa we are limited to school holidays and because I want consistent good **weather for a week.

worriedatthistime · 16/06/2022 13:54

@ForestFae you do very much think you are better and can't really see that you are the one looking down
You claim your children are brought up to be true to themselves like going to spain takes that away
Yet in same breath if one wanted to go abroad you wouldn't and funnily all your children like the same as you and the same thing
In our family of 4 we all want quite different things from a holiday and normally manage to incorporate it all , but we also have compromise too

ive never said I’m better - if you feel like that from reading my posts, that’s a you issue.

my children are quite different to many other children, in multiple ways. I get it commented on a lot. They’re not like other kids. So whatever you’re imagining (it sounds like you think they’re forced to go camping lmao), it’s inaccurate.

Neither middle class or a wine drinker. Not a bully either, odd that when you have a different opinion it isn’t bullying, insulting or pathetic 😉

I don’t make snide comments like you did, nor do I personally insult people simply for disagreeing with me. You lot really can’t hack people going against the hive mind.

You said the idea of sitting on a beach is shit
Plenty of kids never get a holiday so no your kids are not missing out at all , but you are coming across defensive
When if you and yours enjoy your hols what odds does it make
One thing though you mentioned cheap cottage in earlier thread and now mention you home school , so those cheap places are not available to most of us
And i could never afford to home school

I said I think it’s shit, as in, I find it shit. I didn’t say everyone else has to?

Genuine question - is it not cheaper to take the fine for raking kids out of school than paying august prices? I wouldn’t know, I’ve not had to do it, but I think it’s about £120 isn’t it? Which given how much prices go up in august, would seem relatively cheap!

Blossomtoes · 16/06/2022 13:59

And you can’t deal with anyone disagreeing with you. 🤷‍♀️ Your kids’ teen years are going to be fun.

Basic comphrension will reveal that it wasn’t a snide comment, you’ll also note I haven’t insulted anyone either.

I do find it odd though that a parent at home with three young children would find so many hours on such a regular basis to be sat on MN. A luxury I do not have when I’m at home with my two!

You can disagree with me all you want - but making snide remarks, insinuating things about my kids etc isn’t on.

worriedatthistime · 16/06/2022 14:00

@ForestFae all children are different and i never said you forced them , you yourself said you wouldn't consider another type of holiday which is fine as I wouldn't camp
If my kids had wanted too though I would of prob tried a weekend for them, luckily they have been camping with clubs /school etc
I am not middle class , live in a council house , i rarely drink wine either

I know what you mean. I remember having a chat with a bloke who loved all inclusive in Egypt and said “you don’t have to leave the hotel it’s great!” and I said what’s the point of flying all the way around the world and never leaving the hotel.

even then, I prefer UK holidays. The UK is a beautiful country, full of history, folklore and wonderful nature. I don’t go abroad.

Not really an either/or, though, surely?

Fine if you don't go abroad, but plenty of people who go abroad don't spend their entire time in an all-inclusive resort. I've travelled extremely widely in the UK, and I've also been all over Europe and North America, and I've never been to an all-inclusive resort anywhere. My holidays abroad and my holidays in the UK are all about sightseeing, food, experiences, wildlife and culture. This year I'm going to be island-hopping in Scotland in the summer; in the autumn I'm hoping to go somewhere Mediterranean. The UK is not the only country where I can enjoy 'history, folklore and wonderful nature'.

worriedatthistime · 16/06/2022 14:06

@ForestFae
For me as i am married it would be £60 per child per adult so £240 so sometimes still cheaper but it depends on age and what they miss out on if exam years or things
Mine are college age now so finish soon , so cheaper holiday this year
I rarely took mine out of school though as they competed in so many sports that they never wanted to miss that and when they were younger fines didn't exsisit and we could only afford weekends away then

But why wouldn’t you just enjoy the lovely green uk playing board games and reading books in the tent? None of that tourist rubbish.

Board games and reading books in a tent souds like my idea of hell. Rubbish, and not a holiday at all.

Totally agree. But you can simultaneously enjoy British and Channel Island holidays and dislike camping (and board games, I do like reading). The one does not require the other.

Those complaining about the UK being expensive have clearly never been to Copenhagen...

ShirleyPhallus · 16/06/2022 14:21

There was a thread once about towels and a poster there insisted on changing her towels daily…. But so that her environmental impact wasn’t too high she only used a hand towel to dry herself and then changed that every day. She gave the same to her early teenage son too who I presume was about to change in to a hulking great teenage son as they do.

She swore blind that he just loved using a hand towel to dry himself and had never ever expressed a desire to use a bath towel before, and he was much happier having his clean hand towel each day rather than using a bath towel but changing it weekly.

I am really reminded of that with the poster who swears blind her children would rather visit a museum and sit in a tent than go abroad.

It’s just funny how when you have an alt lifestyle, it’s always “it’s not fair on your kids! What if they want mainstream!” But no one says to someone with a mainstream lifestyle “it’s not fair on your kids! What if they want the alternative!”
