To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

Dogscanteatonions · 15/06/2022 09:54

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

I’m not defensive about anything, I just find it funny when people’s reaction Is basically “how dare you raise your kids away from consumerism and material rubbish!” when the way I raise my kids is closer to the way humans have been raised for centuries and the “normal” ways being touted are very modern inventions in terms of human history.

But nobody actually cares how you are choosing to raise your kids. YOU think everyone is against you but it's actually YOU telling us how shit we are for 'conforming' to society and not choosing to live like you.
You even managed to have a dig a working mums on a thread about holidays!!

There was a thread once about towels and a poster there insisted on changing her towels daily…. But so that her environmental impact wasn’t too high she only used a hand towel to dry herself and then changed that every day. She gave the same to her early teenage son too who I presume was about to change in to a hulking great teenage son as they do.

She swore blind that he just loved using a hand towel to dry himself and had never ever expressed a desire to use a bath towel before, and he was much happier having his clean hand towel each day rather than using a bath towel but changing it weekly.

I am really reminded of that with the poster who swears blind her children would rather visit a museum and sit in a tent than go abroad.

Lol what? My eldest son is 7 and I certainly don’t wash my towels daily, I have adhd and that’s too much organising for me!

Where did I dig at working mums? And that’s funny, because it’s you lot who keep asking me endless invasive questions about my family and our life.

nor do I personally insult people simply for disagreeing with me
Yes you do!!

Mumsnet struggles massively with this concept - if you’re not a girl bossing CEO that likes spa days and shopping, you’re Doing It Wrong.

Is this not a dig forestfae? And absolutely nothing to do with holidays.

Grumpybutfunny · 16/06/2022 14:36

We often do two a year so somewhere in Europe or Greece in the summer when it warm. Then winter sun is the Caribbean. We've got a week off in august and looking at Egypt last minute then have Mexico booked for October. We will get fined for October but DS is exceeding expectations, we both work full time shifts, we are going with friends for a wedding and it's been cancelled twice for COVID so will just pay it.

Annoyingly if half term was the same week as always it would be one week out of school not 2

ForestFae · 16/06/2022 14:26

Where?

Aside from the digs on this thread about how sad you are for other people kids and comments on ^touristy rubbish' didn't you tell a working mum the other day to 'enjoy just seeing your kids at weekends'??

Feelingoktoday · 16/06/2022 14:39

ForestFae · 15/06/2022 14:28

Is that August by any chance?

Yes. Incredible price. Beautiful if it’s sunny but miserable if it rains.

It’s related because of all the comments about spa resorts, and also it’s a comment about how MN is very over representative of one particular lifestyle and looks down on those who have a different one. It’s not saying there’s anything wrong with that lifestyle in itself.

Not for disagreeing with me - for being equally nasty to me first. If someone’s rude to be ill be rude back, but I don’t just insult people for disagreeing.

If you say so, nice attempt at backtracking though. 👌

Not backtracking at all - if you’re offended by the insinuation that MN is a bit of a bubble, ask yourself why.

I don’t buy into respectability politics. I’m not going to be polite to someone who isn’t polite to me. Don’t like it? Don’t be rude to me first. It’s interesting how you never criticise anyone being rude to me btw, but if I say anything that could even possibly be taken as an insult, you’re all over it. Not biased at all are you!

Blossomtoes · 16/06/2022 14:47

Ffs @ForestFae and @brookstar give it a rest. You’re making the thread completely pointless between the pair of you.

brookstar · 16/06/2022 14:50

Because all I see is you being incredibly rude ForestFae. I have never criticised how you choose to raise your children and live your life but i have seen you repeatedly insult the way I choose to life my life. It might not always be directed at me but when you are insulting how I choose to live my life it does make me respond.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/06/2022 14:50

I'm not a spa lover , a high flying CEO nor am I mean

Out of interest @ForestFae have you actually asked your children what holiday they would like. ? If it's that genuinely they are 'mini you' then here's a few suggestions of holidays I've been on that I think they would like, given the nature/castles/folklore thing

1 Black Forest down as far as Lake Constance- lots of camping, cycling, hiking , lakes and castles - probably avoid July and August as it's consistently sunny and warm but does thunder quite a bit

2 Brittany-concarneau - standing stones, great camp sites, forests, pretty town cycling, hiking

  1. Denmark - Copenhagen and coast- having just lived there for 19 months, excellent city, cycling coming out your ears, kayaking, white sandy beaches, castles galore , the fantastic bridge to Sweden , superb camping and 'summer cottages' and sunny a lot of the time in summer but not hot - not humid, really fresh air

4 Sweden- similar to Copenhagen but a bit cheaper, forests, lakes, superb food, high standards, sunny but rarely hot

5 Canada - castles, hiking, camping, superb food , forests and hiking and not too hot

6 krakow and Zakopane- Poland. Lovely city plus mountain resort, swirling rivers, fantastic nature , cheap , great food and if your kids are old enough/up to it

I've enjoyed all these too- they just happen not to be UK -

For anyone who isn't into the flop and fly and has active kids but likes going out of the UK , they are all well worth your time -- I can't guarantee wall to wall 32 degrees
And sun but in all honesty I've had great weather in all of them for most of the holiday

bellinisurge · 16/06/2022 14:55

Used to agree. Had too many shit, expensive, wet summer holidays in the UK to keep that view

I have, the usual response is “cabin in the woods!” which makes me laugh because they make it sound like a horror title but what they mean is when we rent a lodge in the forest for a few days. They also like regular camping, centre parcs, and the yorkshire coast. They ask to go back to all those places.

I am actually interested in Sweden and the Scandinavian countries when the dc are a bit older!

bellinisurge · 16/06/2022 14:57

For clarification, I am a : nature rambles, beach combing, visit castles kind of holiday maker

Crikeyalmighty · 16/06/2022 15:07

@ForestFae I would recommend them- my own view is they are better combined with a bit of 'city' but I think they would suit you. Lots of 'alternative' stuff- but not in a bad way- Copenhagen and Stockholm both have great metros too if you don't want all the cycling but both very easy to get out into nature and the air is amazing . Germany too very good for it - somewhere like Baden Baden .

I actually like both kinds of holidays as does my husband and son who is now 24. I don't gave an issue if someone really likes UK holidays - it's up to them, personally I just find the standards quite poor for the money and I like to hear loads of languages , different architecture, vegetation and food and I don't like consistent rain for days on my main holiday I don't mind if it's not red hot as I frazzle!

Hellsbe · 16/06/2022 15:10

ForestFae · 16/06/2022 12:51

Your language is interesting. He is boring, presumably you are fun and interesting? You seem incapable of understanding it’s subjective.

I know a family like this. Twat of a father who wouldn’t hear of holidays abroad.

His long suffering wife and kids started going away without him every other year to France.

The kids are now 22,(twin girls) and they don’t have a good relationship with their father.
They meet their mum separately for a catch up.
Twat dad is now a keen cyclist and disappears every weekend in a sea of Lycra.

Orangello · 16/06/2022 15:11

My children also liked both CenterParcs and sleeping in the tent in our own back yard. but they didn't complain too much about snorkelling in Thailand either. But if this wasn't even an option, how would they know to ask?

hangrylady · 16/06/2022 15:19

ForestFae · 16/06/2022 13:58

I said I think it’s shit, as in, I find it shit. I didn’t say everyone else has to?

Genuine question - is it not cheaper to take the fine for raking kids out of school than paying august prices? I wouldn’t know, I’ve not had to do it, but I think it’s about £120 isn’t it? Which given how much prices go up in august, would seem relatively cheap!

Possibly yes. I personally wouldn't do this myself and such up the extortionate prices but I can completely understand why others would.
