To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

That's not the point I was making forestfae. If your kids ( any, or all) expressed to do a holiday that wasn't UK/NT/Camping etc would you consider it?

I've done holidays which have very much been centred around DS because we knew it was something he would like.

I’d let DH take them if he wanted to, he’s more laid back them me - I wouldn’t go somewhere hot myself though. Unless it was just for a weekend. I can’t bear it.

ForestFae · 16/06/2022 13:09

Than me* that should say.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/06/2022 13:13

Last summer I went to Barbados because I couldn’t afford Cornwall. Maybe that’s why?

brookstar · 16/06/2022 13:15

That's not the point I'm making .....it doesn't have to be a hot destination! It's about kids not always wanting to go camping or to stately homes.
Going abroad doesn't always have to mean beach and pool.

HelenHywater · 16/06/2022 13:18

I always take my kids abroad for a summer holiday. In the past when they were toddlers, we did do a few years in Cornwall. The weather was never good enough to warrant the cost of the holiday. We came home early more than once because we were just too soaked all the time. I love the sun and the certainty that it will be warm all the time.

And the culture and the experiences are different abroad too and It's just so expensive here too. I did a staycation last summer (in the correct sense of the word) and spent a fortune.

And it's my holiday too, not just my children and I like to get away, to a different place and enjoy the weather, the people, the food and the sights. I don't get a holiday in this country. It's just too hard, cold/wet and too expensive. (and going to a tesco in the UK isn't as fun as going to a supermarket abroad...).

Your language is interesting. He is boring, presumably you are fun and interesting? You seem incapable of understanding it’s subjective.

I think I'm quite good fun yes, but as you say it's subjective. You, however, don't seem to understand that it's not always either/or and people can like many different things. This guy refuses to give his family the experience of a different type of holiday because he doesn't want go, so they're stuck with what he wants to do every year. My family enjoy sightseeing in the UK, the countryside, sailing and camping but also enjoy a beach holiday once a year, with waterslides, games and cheesy evening entertainment! In fact I must get off MN now as I need to pack for our camping trip this weekend. It's due to piss down with rain BTW, which for me will make it less fun, but it'll still be a laugh no doubt.

Topseyt123 · 16/06/2022 13:19

But why wouldn’t you just enjoy the lovely green uk playing board games and reading books in the tent? None of that tourist rubbish.

Board games and reading books in a tent souds like my idea of hell. Rubbish, and not a holiday at all.

shivbo2014 · 16/06/2022 13:21

Because I like the seasons and wouldn't want to go away in autumn or winter. I want it to be hot in summer though so we are going to Greece where we can guarantee we'll have hot weather every day! Not having to pack a fleece, shorts, wellies, waterproofs, bikinis because the weather is so variable.

AllHailKingLouis · 16/06/2022 13:22

Reading books in a tent 😂🤣 fuck me I feel depressed just reading that

So do I, and I love reading books. Just not in a tent in the pissing rain.

Because your idea of a holiday is the only one that counts, right? Lazing on a beach sounds boring and shit to me so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too. Reading a book in the shade by a sparkling pool or the sea with a drink with ice tinkling in it - now you’re talking.

I absolutely agree. I love autumn and would much prefer to holiday in the UK during this time and I avoid November/December because I love the build up to Christmas. I'm going somewhere hot for work in late nov/early December and i'm not as excited as I usually am about the trip because i'll miss the Christmas light switch on and all the associate activities in my village.

Where do I sign up for this??

On my last holiday I swam with sharks and sea turtles.

If I want to read a book I'll do it in my own living room where I can control the temperature, lie on a comfy sofa or balcony hanging chair, use a proper toilet which is clean and private, and have whatever I like to eat.

I don’t personally want to go abroad at least until they’re older, so no I wouldn’t take them abroad at the moment. If they were 10+, I’d take them to a few places if they wanted to go.

See being by a pool doesn’t interest me at all - that sounds very boring to me. Give me stormy weather, rugged mountains, old forests any day. It’s amazing that people like different things eh!

Just about anywhere in the Mediterranean. I didn’t just invent it! 😂

I meant right now...it sounds far preferable to marking dissertations!

And reading in a tent with rain pouring down sounds like purgatory to me. And the complete reverse of relaxing. Obviously that’s not all we do.

It sounds like it's all about what you want rather than what your family as a whole would like to do.

Well, if you bother to read my posts, of which there are several, you will see that lazing on a beach or beside a pool is only part of my holiday. The rest is exploring.

Yes, my idea of a holiday is the only one that counts TO ME. I don't expect it to count to anyone else as we are all different.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/06/2022 13:42

@hangrylady - exactly- I actually put my foot down about this one year and took my son on my own to Benidorm for his 18th- and we had a smashing time- husband didn't come- great as he would only have been picking fault and being snobby about it.
but I also like Greek islands, lovely French scenery, German cities, Werkends in York/Guildford/poole/ Bournemouth etc - as does my son!!

I think the more likely it is that peoples kids at 18 will be champing at the bit at 18 for water parks, festivals, clubs, foam parties etc if the most exciting they get is reading in tents , camping and national trust. It's weird as I'm originally from Nottinghamshire but it seems a very middle class 'slightly superior' attitude creeping in - ok some kids will like all this but I've not met many these days I who only like this sort of holiday -

They’re not interested in going either - they’ve never asked to. DS1 has even said he doesn’t like the idea of flying. It’s not some sort of requirement to go abroad. You seem particularly adversarial towards me, is there any particular reason you take such offence to the way my family chooses to do things?

My dads friend used to love saying to my dad “your daughter will be the one going out drinking at 18 and clubbing!” because I enjoyed all those things. Never happened. I’ve never once set foot in a nightclub and never been to a foam party. So I don’t buy that for a moment. Not everyone likes that lifestyle or is remotely interested in it.
