Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

I'm just worried about the strange souls on here ordering ONE curry, like wtf, there is a world of Chinese/Cantonese curry out there, why don't you have a few? (Money allowing). Op I don't begrudge you your banquet but next time get some beef/pork/chicken, all that prawn will turn on you.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/06/2022 01:33

Where we are, one main with a rice and chips or a starter like spring rolls is plenty of food for big meals for two adults or an adult and two small DC and it's got so expensive now that ordering that amount is what makes it affordable.

No wonder the OPs order cost so much, they've ordered food for about 8 people.

NumberTheory · 13/06/2022 01:39

Cost of a takeaway depends on many things and doesn't necessarily correlate to being "fat bastards". But your order would be an excessive amount of food for 4 for a run-of-the-mill takeaway night for us.

For 4 adults we would order 3 or 4 dishes (including veg dishes), plus 1 or 2 appetisers and 2 or 3 rice/noodle dishes. So a fair bit less than you.

However, I wouldn't expect any leftovers (and we wouldn't get leftovers even if we ordered as much as you did, because when it comes to Chinese takeaway, we are fat bastards in our own special way!)

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 13/06/2022 01:48

A decent Chinese with all the sundries around here (London) is about £40 for two of us, so that sounds about right to me. We spent £50
on sushi for two last night.

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/06/2022 02:17

Depends where you live but that seems an awful lot of food (how many mains?!) and a very high bill for four.

We didnt spend that on a takeaway for 8 when all the kids where still at home a few years ago, and we never had a full main each, never mind best part of two each!

mathanxiety · 13/06/2022 02:36

Listed items:
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce
1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce
1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce
1x King Prawns Satay
1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce
1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck
1x Mixed Appetisers for 2
1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce *
3x Egg Fried Rice (300g)
1x Special Chow Mein
1x King Prawns Fried Rice

That sounds like enough food for about ten people.

Applegreenb · 13/06/2022 03:03

DH and I had this conversation as we don’t seem to order the normal amount (in no way skinny) but we dont ever have left overs for the day after.

We would buy one or max two meals, a rice, a side and prawn crackers to split. So an example is sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice, satay chicken skewers and prawn crackers. That’s two adults.

If we are super hungry we might add an extra meal like beef in black bean and an extra rice to really push the boat out…..god we sound boring 😂

Gingerkittykat · 13/06/2022 04:58

ITEM PRICE
1x Meal for One Regular £7.00
(Korean BBQ | +Coke can | CB-Sweet & Spicy)
1x Bibimbap £10.50
(Add Extra Bulgogi | Bibimbap spicy | Miso Soup |
Side Kimchi)
1x Fried Dumplings £3.00
(Pork (x5))
1x Extra Sauce £1.00
(Korean BBQ)
DETAIL AMOUNT
Bill Total: £21.50

My latest takeaway from a Korean restaurant. The meal deal for one is BBQ chicken with extra sweet and spicy chicken bites, chips and a can of coke. Bibimpap is rice, fried egg and vegetables which would be £7 on its own but the extras bump up the price. It's a few doors along from me so no delivery fee.

I don't want to spend more than £20 on a takeaway for the two of us (me and student DD). Indian takeaways have got so expensive it is actually cheaper to go out for the meal instead. I think the last time we got an Indian it was about £35 but the local buffet is £8.95 for lunch or £12.99 for dinner so I would go there instead.

Incognolio · 13/06/2022 05:29

For 4 we'd probably spend the same to cater for all. How much you spend or others spend is irrelevant though. It's up to the individual how much they can afford or want to spend. This OP just sounds like a gloat of look how much we spend on food when other people can't even spend half that... Pointless polling.

sashh · 13/06/2022 06:04

That's a lot of money.

One thing to note is where you live. When I first moved 'down south' I was shocked you had to pay for rice.

It's a long time since I had a takeaway 'up north' but I don't remember ever paying for rice, with Chinese it was just included and with Indian it was usually rice/naan or chapati included.

I've just had a look at my local Chinese menu, £42 for a set meal for 4, it has 3 starters, 4 mains, rice and prawn crackers.

Goatinthegarden · 13/06/2022 06:42

It’s a bit hard to work out, but it looks like you ordered 7 mains for four people? Plus 5 sides and some appetisers?

I hate to sound like a Mumsnet competitive under-eater, but that just seems like an obscene amount of food. I like to eat, but when we get a takeaway, we get one main and one side each, and I reckon just that is still easily over 1500 calories of food each. DH and I only order takeaway as a treat if we’ve done a huge amount of exercise.

Because you can only eat one dinner?

I happily experiment with different dishes, but I don't feel the need to do that in a single sitting. So one time I'll order curry X, and next time I'll order curry Y.

LubaLuca · 13/06/2022 07:14

My head is swelling just reading that order (I'm allergic to shellfish).

There's a lot of king prawns on there which I think is usually an expensive option so that goes some way to explaining the big bill. There are also lots of individual main dishes there, I lost count but possibly 2 each? I suppose most people have one.

TheHaka · 13/06/2022 07:19

I’ve not had takeaway in years, due to most not tasting pleasant, & there’s always far too much. On those grounds yes you are greedy fat bastards, but most people are so I suppose it’s just the norm these days 🤮

coffeecupsandfairylights · 13/06/2022 07:22

Takeaway around here is limited but cheap. For two people I would say we spend:

Chinese - £20
Chippy - less than £10
KFC equivalent - less than £10

We don't have a decent pizza place and then Indian doesn't deliver.

MistyRuins · 13/06/2022 07:29

I spend £12.80 per person at my local Chinese. That gets me soup, starter, main and rice, and it lasts me two or three meals depending on how hungry I am.

Sallyingon · 13/06/2022 07:35

For 4 of us we order:
3 mains
2 rice
1 chips
2 starters
1 prawn crackers
I think we are lucky that they have big portions where we are.
It costs about £40

WhoopItUp · 13/06/2022 07:39

I think the price depends on whether you are ordering from a proper restaurant which also does takeaway, or a normal takeaway. We can easily spend £40 on two people if it’s the former.

LuckyAmy1986 · 13/06/2022 07:44

That’s a lot of rice l think!

PaddleBoardingMomma · 13/06/2022 07:48

The UK's obesity crisis is a mystery, you only had 9 mains between 4 people that's hardly anything 🙄

lugeforlife · 13/06/2022 07:49

We don't have many Chinese/Indian takeaways these days - tends to be Nando's or pizza or maccy ds because dds are a bit fussy and those can be shared to accommodate fuss.

When we do, dd2 and dh will share a chicken dish and a rice. I will have a veggie main and either a noodle or a rice and dd1 will pinch a bit of mine too unless it has mushrooms. Prawn crackers and I will
have a pancake roll as I adore them. I will have leftovers and the others won't.

Curry is similar - I have a side and a veggie main, dd2 shared curry with dh, we share 2 rice and 2 naan between 3 and i have leftovers.

Me and dd2 big eaters. Dd1 and dh average.

We probably spend about £30 on any takeaway except McDonald's.

Yodaisawally · 13/06/2022 07:50

Bellarima · 13/06/2022 00:24

We had Chinese on Saturday

We had mixed appetisers for 4 - spring rolls, wontons, prawn toast, seaweed
1/4 duck with pancakes etc
Beef in black bean sauce
Sweet and sour pork
Crispy chicken
Salt and pepper squid
Garlic chicken
Large egg fried rice
Salt and pepper chips
Prawn crackers

And it was 33.75 so yours sounds extortionate

It's £15 just for the duck here, I think our costs would be double, at least

ItsSnowJokes · 13/06/2022 07:54

Come on OP this is mumsnet of course that takeaway is too much. They can only handle 2 grains of rice and a sniff of a prawn toast on here and that would last them a week with loads left over.

It sounds normal to me when you have people round. Ours is normally 30-35 for 3 people at Chinese. About that for 2 from Indian.

MeanderingGently · 13/06/2022 08:00

Totally missing the point here......
.....but reading this thread reminds me of why I don't ever eat/order takeaway. Cost of living crisis indeed! On my £20 per week budget for food (yes, I admit I'm single, home cook and don't have a big appetite, nor am I feeding a growing family) £85 blown on one meal is extraordinary.
Clearly I am old enough to be entirely behind the times......

SirChenjins · 13/06/2022 08:03

You got a touch of the hyperboles today? 7 main dishes, 5 sides and some appetisers is a shedload for 4 people. If you don't think that's much then you must be packing away the food.
