Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

Between £25 and £35 between two of us for Indian, Chinese or pizza.

Imissmoominmama · 14/06/2022 18:49

If you’re fat bastards, we’re tight bastards- DH and I share a main, rice and naan from the Indian!

Kadj · 14/06/2022 18:51

Ours is around 35 for 2 adults and 2 kids
we get
chicken curry
prawn black bean
fried rice
noodles
chips
gravy
chicken nuggets.
we always get 2 meals between us so we can have a bit if both 😏

Teaismymiddlename · 14/06/2022 18:57

We're south coast. Our local Chinese are all about £7 a dish so it can add up really fast if you want a couple of different flavours to try with some ribs and chow mein etc but we always have enough left for another meal the next day too

HopeForTheBest · 14/06/2022 18:59

I think that's an insane amount of food for 4 people!
We would order 1 main each (with rice) plus maybe 2 starters.
Not in the UK so prices won't be directly comparable, but it's usually about €25 for 3 of us.
We ordered from a very expensive Vietnamese place the other night and that came to €55 (3 mains with rice, 2 starters). It was fantastic though.

purplevamp · 14/06/2022 19:01

The last time we got a takeaway it was £65 and that was a Chinese for 4. We used to get them every week before lockdown and it would come to £35-£40. I don't know how we could afford it as we can't now. On the rare occasion I'm home alone I think I'd like a takeaway but it still comes in at £20+ due to all the delivery fees, etc, so I never bother getting it 😢

Do you like prawns OP?! 😆

shellyleppard · 14/06/2022 19:03

I spend about£20 for three of us.... usually chicken curry rice and chips, sweet and sour chicken and double prawn toast 🙄🙄 but that does feed myself and two hungry teenagers....so semi fat bastards lololol...... plus we get free prawn crackers!! 😎💗

fetchacloth · 14/06/2022 19:08

£40 wouldn't even buy fish, chips and mushy peas for 4 people, from the chip shop around here (no delivery, pick up only) so I think your spend is reasonable really.

Spiider · 14/06/2022 19:09

That does seem a lot!
On a Chinese we would spend around £24 max between 2 - though I am more north than south.
2 x main - lemon chicken and sweet and sour prawns for example.
Egg Fried rice
Vegetable Chow Mein
Prawn Toast
Duck spring rolls
This thread is making me hungry!

User48751490 · 14/06/2022 19:19

Prawns daft was the only thing jumping out at me😂

larkstar · 14/06/2022 19:23

Honestly, the last takeaway I had was in 2001. I prefer my own cooking. I just don't want to waste money on things that aren't essential.

mylifestory · 14/06/2022 19:24

depends where its from. if a posh chinese then ok bt if a bog standard 1 then its expensive.
And, as everyone has said, you ordered a hell of a lot of food for 4 ppl!!

Vynalbob · 14/06/2022 19:25

Must depend on the areas prices I'd guess
2.5 people
2020. Chippy Chinese. Indian
12. 14 20
2022. 16 14 22

Must be a good takeaway area here, though if DS & DiL are here it triples 😲

Spottymushroom · 14/06/2022 19:27

Ours is £60 for 5 of us - adults
chicken curry
chicken in black bean sauce
sweet and sour chicken balls
chicken chow mein
bbq ribs
chicken satay (main)
3 egg fried rice
3 chips
prawn crackers are free
salt and pepper chicken free if you collect

there are no left overs

Georgyporky · 14/06/2022 19:37

Difficult to count the dishes without paragraphs, but I make it 13 dishes for 4 people?

Not necessarily fat, but certainly greedy. Dh & I order 3 dishes for 2.

Usually about £18-20.

keffie12 · 14/06/2022 19:42

Part of the cost will be where you live so prices will vary! We rarely buy takeaways so I'm not in a position to comment.

It seems alot to me though. If you are looking to save money that should be the first thing to go.

You can get simple online recipes and make your own for a fraction of the price. Even buying some of the sides, at the supermarket will save money.

Up to you how you spend your money though, I know.

Sswhinesthebest · 14/06/2022 19:49

We’d have duck and two or three starters between 4 of us. But we’d probably only have three mains as a main each is too much. Probably only need one or two rices too.

Royalbloo · 14/06/2022 19:55

Sorry but that's absolutely LOADS!

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 14/06/2022 21:02

Bloody hell OP and I thought our order was 'fat bastards' but you've bout 7/8 meals plus sides, for only 4 people!

Teaismymiddlename · 14/06/2022 21:10

@Spiider just checked my local and that would be £38-42 here for the same food depending on rice sizes etc !!

Lolabray · 14/06/2022 21:10

There three of us and I’m on a bit of a budget so mine would be £20 max

ThanksNoThanks · 14/06/2022 21:13

Haha! You spent £85 at the prawn-brokers

waitingpatientlyforspring · 14/06/2022 21:19

Wow that is a lot! We don’t get Chinese often and our teenagers don’t like the main dishes.

The following would feed 4 of us plus enough for DH and I the next day:

1 chicken based main
1 bean curd main
1 boiled rice
1 chicken fried rice (for Ds)
1 mushroom fried rice (for DD)
1 noodles and bean sprouts
1 bag of prawn crackers
1 portion of chips

plus for free we would get either another prawn crackers or sometimes a portion of vegetable spring rolls

I’ve just made a pretend order and including delivery that was £33.70. So I’ve no idea how you can spend more than double that. Unless our takeaways are much cheaper.

Bleedinghearts · 14/06/2022 21:35

That’s insane. So much food, so expensive. How do you eat all of that? Husband and I would share a main dish & order one extra portion of chips, it’s still plenty. Usually costs around £12.

mycatisannoying · 14/06/2022 21:37

I dunno. All I know is that this fat bastard is now starving! Thank you very much Grin
