Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

Chinese is the most expensive takeaway imo. Especially recently. Our usual bill is £45 ish. But always loads left over for the next day.

RampantIvy · 13/06/2022 19:22

I am just looking at our local takeaway menu. Most mains are £5, the most expensive is £6.50 and egg fried rice is £2.30. This is to collect, they don't deliver.

A meal for the two of us - 2 mains and a fried rice bwetween us is usually under £15. We aren't competitive undereaters by any means. They are Yorkshire portions (huge).

And Yorkshire prices too 😁

Mangogogogo · 14/06/2022 16:49

We get duck fried rice £7.40 spicy chips £3.70 and a pot of bbq £2 and free prawn crackers and share that between two of us!

this is in the north east and we’re slightly overweight lolllll
i would never spend over £20 on one but we do go a bit ott when we go out for dinner. Take away to us is a cba to cook, not necessarily a treat

adlitem · 14/06/2022 16:51

As a complete aside, I find it so odd people pair carbs with carbs. Rice with chips?! What?!

RampantIvy · 14/06/2022 16:56

So do I @adlitem. I don't get why people eat chips with lasagne. They must serve miniscule portions of lasagne if they need chips as well.

yes, or even lasagne, chips and garlic bread. What is that?!

I know someone who triple carbs and has lasagne, garlic bread and chips..

We had Chinese on Friday evening and spent £43 on

Mini veg spring rolls
Vegetable gyozas
Tofu in Kung Po sauce
Sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style
Chicken in satay sauce
salt and pepper chicken
plain chow mein
yeung chow fried rice

or our usual Indian order is about £35 and weirdly I refuse to buy rice when Tilda pilau microwave is £1 a packet.

Onion bhajis
Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken Pathis
Vegetable Achari
2 Garlic Naan
Sag Aloo

We are a family of 4 and I managed an extra lunch from the Chinese but we never have any leftovers from an Indian.

Mummumtum · 14/06/2022 17:25

This thread has really made me want a Chinese takeaway

lashy · 14/06/2022 17:30

I rarely buy takeaway food and can't remember when I last bought Chinese - so can't really answer the OP; however, this thread/replies has had me laughing my socks off with the [tongue in cheek] references to your own food orders. Thank you for brightening my afternoon Smile

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/06/2022 17:50

2 adult 2 teens
Bloody hell!!!!. That's tonnes for 4 I'd never eat it all.

Our usual Indian is

4 nann
Onion Bhaji
Chicken tikka birinai
Chicken dansak
Two tikka mains for the teens
Approx £40

Chinese
2 x chicken chow mien
One sweet sour chicken ball
One salt pepper ribs
One egg fried rice
Approx £25

Chanel05 · 14/06/2022 17:55

For a Chinese for me and DH we share:
Egg fried rice
Sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style
Chicken chow mein

£15.10 delivered with prawn crackers

cdba88 · 14/06/2022 18:01

Usually around £28 for both of us

AmberMcAmber · 14/06/2022 18:08

For Chinese food we spend about £20 on two of us: sweet & sour chicken balls, chicken or beef chow mien, chicken fried rice (we will also have left overs for 1 lunch)

For Indian we spend about £30: one pilau rice, 2 mains (like a tikka masala), two naans and 3-4 poppodoms

for pizza it’s £25: we do dominos bogof collection with extra dip and this will do dinner & following lunch for both of us (unless we are feeling really hungry and we’ll eat the whole thing in one go)

Fluffmum · 14/06/2022 18:10

30 quid for 4 adults in ours

Blowyourowntrumpet · 14/06/2022 18:27

Definitely under ,£50 for 4 adults. That's a massive amount of food

Greenshed · 14/06/2022 18:28

I don’t know where you live, so that might have some bearing on the price. However, I would say the number of dishes seems quite a lot for 4 unless each dish is a very small portion.
We tend to order 1/4 duck between the two of us as a starter or combination starter for two, two main dishes, a portion of rice and a portion of prawn crackers. Delivered it costs in the region of £24-£26, depending which starter we go for.

GingerWit · 14/06/2022 18:28

Where do you live? I would like to be a fat bastard with you.

Love me some prawns.

Chooksnroses · 14/06/2022 18:29

Our Indian Takeaway for two cost us £23. Two mains, One rice, one bread. Plenty of food.

Greenshed · 14/06/2022 18:30

Oh, and which rice we choose.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 14/06/2022 18:36

We probably spend around £30 for 4 of us on Chinese and about £45 or so on Indian.

Think we must live in a cheap area as we order a fair bit.

Roo4u · 14/06/2022 18:37

Youre not supposed to reheat prawns are you

restingbitchface30 · 14/06/2022 18:37

Around £30 for 4 of us. And that’s a lot of food for us we always have leftovers. Your amount has shocked me.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 14/06/2022 18:38

Roo4u · 14/06/2022 18:37

Youre not supposed to reheat prawns are you

But there are loads of cooked prawns in ready meals that you just reheat?
