Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

YABU and you know it

Totally depends on where you live surely, we live in a small tourist city and that’s around what we pay, maybe slightly less sure it ours are about £36 or £37 something. On iPad abroad so can’t look on deliveroo. That’s basically 2 Thai/Indian/Korean meals with rices possibly. Pizzas are slightly less.,

mrsm43s · 13/06/2022 12:38

Obviously cost is going to vary wildly depending on location and grade of the restaurant.

For 2 we would have
Mixed starter for 2 (seaweed, mini spring rolls, prawn toast, spare ribs, chicken satay)
One rice or noodle dish
2 mains
Prawn crackers.

If there are three of us, it would be as above, but with starters for 3, and probably rice and noodles.

If 4 of us, as per 3, but starters for 4, and add another main.

We always, always have leftovers when we order chinese.

For Indian, we order a main, half a rice, half a naan and half a side each. If there was an odd number of us, we'd round up the rice/naan, but probably round down the side dishes. We rarely have leftovers.

Cost wise, Chinese tends to be more expensive than Indian.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 13/06/2022 12:42

So rice or chips does not come automatically in the UK with a side dish?
We would get, for two, a main each and then one rice and one chips which are included in the cost. Would possibly get a sharing platter to start. I am in Dublin and that alone would cost 40euro plus delivery.

Marmite27 · 13/06/2022 12:43

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 12/06/2022 22:16

I usually get chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan and 9 poppadoms.

I bet you won’t share either.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 13/06/2022 12:48

I just decided to look at the local justeat page and price up our normal indian order and nearly died when I saw the local place charges 8quid for delivery. The meal itself for a starter and main each plus a naan bread would be only 34euro though so cheaper than chinese.

Abouttimemum · 13/06/2022 12:51

@StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon I live in the north east and rice / chips are always included with the main. We have 6 Chinese takeaways near us and it’s the same at all if then. It’s about 50p to upgrade to fried rice.

At the 3 Indian takeaways we use, you have to pay for rice as a side, if you want it.

Chinese has overtaken the chippy as the cheapest option around here.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 13/06/2022 12:55

I am absolutely marvin now thinking of all this food and not one place open near me.

RJnomore1 · 13/06/2022 13:00

The cost doesn’t horrify me as much as the amount unless they are tiny portions!

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 13/06/2022 13:04

We'd usually get curry for us 4 and this would be 3-4 mains, usually chicken achari, lamb saagh, chicken dansak as the kids love the pineapple, mixed veg dopiaza, 2 chapati each, aloo gobi, and chana masala

damn, hungry now.

skybluee · 13/06/2022 13:07

I love Chinese food. This is what I usually get with a friend:

one main each - I like prawns, pak choi and garlic, my friend likes beef beansprout thing
one side each - I like boiled rice, my friend likes noodles
free prawn crackers (we are actually not very keen on these and ask them not to send them but they always do!)
then a starter to share, like sesame prawn toasts.

It's tempting to order more as it's all so delicious but there's always stuff left over so we try and be sensible as both trying to save money! The last time we had this was a few years ago so it's probably gone up but here the mains are about £7 - £9, the sides are about £1.50 - £3 and the starter is about £4.50
My friend goes to pick it up on a bike because the delivery takes so long. If you order it to pick up it's ready in 10-15 mins whereas to deliver it's like an hour.

For Indian we would go to eat in because the price seems the same.

Lochjeda · 13/06/2022 13:11

Yeah that's an absolutely massive order. There is five of us, me dh, dd 17, dd12 and ds8 and our go to order is 2 chicken noodle soups (younger ones like it to start), smoked shredded crispy chicken with curry sauce, beef and black bean, 1 x rice, 1x noodles and 1 x chips. Doesnt always get finished.

oblada · 13/06/2022 13:12

What's the point of ordering take away if it's not significantly cheaper than going out?
I definitely wouldn't spend that much. Usually £30ish. 2 adults 3 kids. And we usually have leftovers.

Beautiful3 · 13/06/2022 13:14

If you can afford it, and want left overs then its fine. It's basically 2 dinners for 4 people, so thats okay. Unless you're all severely overweight, I really wouldn't worry op.

OceanbreezeSun · 13/06/2022 13:18

It does seem like a lot of food for 4 people. That’s a banquet!

We found a very good Chinese near us but it’s quite expensive, so we don’t get a takeaway very often.

For 4 people , we order x4 mains ( make my own egg fried rice) salt & pepper chips, prawn toast or spring rolls and prawn crackers and we share it all.
It comes to about £45.

Rosehugger · 13/06/2022 13:20

On Deliveroo we can spend about £70 - £80 for five people (three adults two teenagers - so five adults really) on Malaysian takeaway having a main course each and rice to share, some prawn crackers and spring rolls or other starter. Fish and Chips is cheaper, more like £50.

But we have no takeaways we can walk to and Deliveroo has opened up lots of otherrestaurant possibilities further away that we would not drive to as the food would be cold by the time we got it home, whereas mostly it's nice and hot when delivered. We have it once a week. It's also much easier and cheaper than eating out.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 13/06/2022 13:27

That’s a ridiculous amount of food!

we got Chinese for four on Friday night, £33 inc £1 to deliver
prawn toast
mixed veg chow mein
Szechwan aubergine
broccoli in garlic sauce
salt and chilli tofu
boiled rice
prawn crackers

BahHumbug2 · 13/06/2022 13:33

Me and my husband get Chinese for 2 for about £15 👀 we get a main to share, noodles to share and a bag of chips 🤣 I can't imagine ever wanting to spend £80+ on a takeaway!

Well, I'm sure if we were a couple of pensioners living in Hull we could get a penn'orth of chips and a cup of gravy between us as well, but living in an expensive part of the south east with two growing teenagers, things may be a little more than £15. But we can afford it, so it doesn't bother me.

Obviously it will be more with two teenagers considering there are more people... Not sure why you singled out my comment but okay... Cool.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 13/06/2022 10:40

Again, that's 4 mains and 5 sides for only 3 people? I just don't get it 🤷🏼‍♀️ bearing in mind Chinese takeaway portions are always huge.

As a one off treat? Maybe? But if folk are doing this every week then it's no wonder all I'm seeing are threads about being broke and being fat. The idea of spending £200 a month on take out is utterly foreign to me.

And no this isn't competitive under eating, it's not wanting to eat myself into an early grave.

We only have this once a month, and like another poster explained, we all have a little bit of everything as opposed to a meal of our own. We'd rather have variety with leftovers than a more limited meal.

Scarlettpixie · 13/06/2022 13:53

For 2 of us, I spend around £14 for a Chinese takeaway and closer to £30 for an Indian takeaway.

The Chinese would be one dish, rice, chips and a sauce.
For Indian, 2 dishes, 1 side/starter, rice and bread/popadoms.

Your order sounds a lot for 4 people!

Comefromaway · 13/06/2022 14:02

We usually have a chippy though dh & dd prefers Indian so we will usually have

Mini Fish
Fishcake
Large Chips
Large Mushy Peas

TOTAL £8.40

Biryiani
Rogan Josh
Rice
Naan Bread (family size)

TOTAL £20.70

So that is just under £30 for four of us

shrunkenhead · 13/06/2022 14:07

This thread reminds me of Smithy in Gavin and Stacey when they order a curry!

WonderingWanda · 13/06/2022 14:41

We'd buy 1 main per person and probably one less rice than the number of people. Maybe one additional dish if it was a special occasion or if there was a set menu for a similar price. That sounds like a lot of food.
