AIBU ice cream truck

Hesalwaysplayinggolf · 12/06/2022 20:23

So we live on a quiet residential road.
My daughter goes to bed at 7pm every night.
3-4 nights a week an ice cream van drives and parks down our road blaring his ice cream truck music. This varies in timing but can be as late as 8pm. Usually between 7-8pm.
This wakes my daughter every time and she takes ages to resettle. She’s genuinely scared.

AIBU to talk to the ice cream man about this?
My husband thinks I’m ridiculous. I think it’s a mickey take to be blaring loud music at 8pm.

We have her window closed and white noise in her room but it still wakes her. I know I could put her to bed once he’s been but he doesn’t come every night so it’s hard to know and she is tired by 7pm.

Fir example tonight dd went to bed at 7pm, I sat down to eat at 7.45 and by 7.50pm he had woken her up. Just got her back down 30mins later.

YABU - Put up with it he’s just earning his living
YANBU - This would annoy me too

@EatYourVegetables

We have a fish truck and a coffee truck. It isnt just ice cream!

Rosehugger · 13/06/2022 12:38

YANBU. 8pm is too late.

We have a mobile fish and chip van that occasionally visits our road but when they do it's 8.30pm - much too late to eat heavy, greasy food! Though at least they don't play a bloody tune.

EatYourVegetables · 13/06/2022 11:07

I fucking hate ice cream trucks. What is the point?? We have shops and fridges. We do not need a truck with loud out of tune music driving around selling it.

And why only ice cream? What’s next? Cheese trucks? Frozen peas trucks? Dog food trucks? Wine trucks? Tena, Always and Tampax trucks? Condom trucks, driving around at 10 pm trying to catch people who are in the mood but forgot to prepare?

I'd bloody love a cheese truck. With extra biscuits and maybe a nice bottle of red on a weekend. Sounds like a plan!

I used to tell my children the man picked his nose and scratched his bum, and had nowhere to wash his hands in the van, so they never asked for one from the van outside school. However I have no solution to the noise waking children up.

I think that might actually be true. I hardly ever use them and if I do only wrapped lollies.

Some places call it an ice cream van. Others call it an ice cream truck.

Where I grew up, it was ice cream truck. Everyone called it the ice cream truck.

But you knew that. You knew exactly what she was talking about. You were just trying to point out what you believed was a mistake by feigning naivety.

It wasn't a mistake. That's what loads of areas call it. You are very rude.

Fuck me, I was asking. Where in the name of fuck was I rude?

Some people on here are fucking batshit.

Rosehugger · 13/06/2022 12:42

When I was little (early 1980s) this may blow your mind, but we had the pop man come round once a week. Selling all your lemonade, cola, cherryade and dandelion and burdock requirements! He would also take the empties.

LadyLothbrook · 13/06/2022 12:43

I have ice cream vans and we work late but don't ring our bells in residential areas after 7 and only attend requested areas via social media.

WonderingWanda · 13/06/2022 12:45

That used to annoy me when mine were younger, they'd be getting readyfor bed and then start asking for ice cream which of course the couldn't have. I think they do it late tomchance their luck on their way home from a day at the beach rpund here. We never get them in the day time or earlier evening. As a kid I loved the ice cream van though.

What is an Ice Cream Truck?

Mumsnet personified.

BiscoffSundae · 13/06/2022 12:48

Gosh where do you all live?! I’m in London and the park was packed the other day at 8pm it’s summer and it’s still light, we left at 8 but there was still loads of kids when we left.

eye rolling at pp moaning about truck, my dd watches loads of American shows so sometimes calls it truck, why are people on MN so petty

Bonjovispjs · 13/06/2022 12:50

We also had a fish and chip van that came round every Friday night, it was a real treat. We also had a van come round twice a week who sold sweets, snacks, drinks, fruit etc, parked right outside our house😁We called him the chew man as we always bought loads of penny chews with our pocket money.

And about ice cream men/women maybe not washing their hands, my friend very recently saw one of them having a piss in a plastic bottle inside the van, needless to say, neither of us have bought anything from him since!

CousinKrispy · 13/06/2022 12:51

I'd love a cheese truck. I don't know what tune it would play though.

HereIAmBrainTheSizeOfAPlanet · 13/06/2022 12:47

Mumsnet personified.

In what way? I was simply asking about a term I have genuinely not heard before. As a result I have been accused of a range of offences, including but not limited to rudeness - that is surely MN personified?
When did we ban asking a simple question?

Nobody's banned asking questions.

So what did you mean by "Mumsnet Personified" exactly?

bloodywhitecat · 13/06/2022 11:11

We have a fish and chip truck, he's quite popular in the village.

We used to have a fish and chip van come you could smell it before you heard it.
We also had a greengrocer van(great as he'd sell half or quarter of a cabbage/cauliflower etc good for older folk he also kept his trimmings and straw and if he knew kids with rabbits or guinea pigs he'd give them the veg trimmings/straw) there was also a fish van, a butchers and little grocers van. Most now gone but the older folks thought they were so useful.

skinnythick · 13/06/2022 13:04

@daimbarsatemydogsbone as if you couldn’t work out that ‘truck’ is a van in some parts of the world 🙄

We had this too, but we called him the lemonade man. Sold many flavours in colours never seen before in nature.
In my particular urban area the ice cream vans also sold single cigarettes to underage kids :)

Now I'd buy your faux naivety if you hadn't posted this in the past:

I would not. Maybe put her to bed 8 pm instead? It's just a part of life.

Katy123g · 13/06/2022 11:13

Like a pp asked are you sure he's selling ice cream? I ask because surely an ice cream vans main customers are kids who have pestered their parents for an ice cream? Are grown adults really going out to an ice cream truck at 7/8pm to buy a 99? Also yanbu, this would piss me off too if it was waking my kids up.

Ours comes round at 8.30 pm and yes we are.
