AIBU ice cream truck

So we live on a quiet residential road.
My daughter goes to bed at 7pm every night.
3-4 nights a week an ice cream van drives and parks down our road blaring his ice cream truck music. This varies in timing but can be as late as 8pm. Usually between 7-8pm.
This wakes my daughter every time and she takes ages to resettle. She’s genuinely scared.

AIBU to talk to the ice cream man about this?
My husband thinks I’m ridiculous. I think it’s a mickey take to be blaring loud music at 8pm.

We have her window closed and white noise in her room but it still wakes her. I know I could put her to bed once he’s been but he doesn’t come every night so it’s hard to know and she is tired by 7pm.

Fir example tonight dd went to bed at 7pm, I sat down to eat at 7.45 and by 7.50pm he had woken her up. Just got her back down 30mins later.

YABU - Put up with it he’s just earning his living
YANBU - This would annoy me too

And why only ice cream? What’s next? Cheese trucks? Frozen peas trucks? Dog food trucks? Wine trucks?

When I was little (early 1980s) this may blow your mind, but we had the pop man come round once a week. Selling all your lemonade, cola, cherryade and dandelion and burdock requirements! He would also take the empties.

I remember the pop . Bilko Man some called it .

I also remember, back in around 1975, when my Aunt moved to just outside Croydon, a lady would come along with a huge basket on her bike and sold newspapers, sweets, milk, bread etc .

This Thread is Hilarious for one reason and another

Legislation in 2021.
Vans can only play chimes between noon and 7pm.
Can only play for 12 seconds when van is stationary and no louder than 80 decibels.
Chimes must automatically shut off after the 12 seconds and cannot be played again in the same length of street during the following 2 hours.

LoisLane66 · 14/06/2022 20:57

Where I live, we don't have ice- cream vans and the local hotel closes its doors at 11pm, although residents can still be served.
There is virtually no noise after 11pm. Some nights you can hear a pin drop and it's a vibrant town with lots of young people and families.

@daimbarsatemydogsbone she obviously means an ice cream van, why on earth are you being weird about it?

Because once again “Americanism” has creeped in, and to some it’s trendy and to others it’s offensive. Almost as bad as “Mac and Cheese”.

Abouttimemum · 14/06/2022 21:54

I agree wholeheartedly, this happens in my street every day from about April to September. It’s a crossroads and he stops in three different places no less. Blasting his music every time. And comes around several times from 4 onwards up until 8.30ish, sometimes later.

Thankfully DS sleeps like a log so it doesn’t wake him, but it still irritates me. I’m also astounded by how many kids aged 6 and under are a, still awake at 8.30pm, and b, allowed to eat ice cream at that time!

can everyone PLEASE STOP SAYING TRUCK INSTEAD OF VAN Grin

'Ice Cream Truck' isn't a thing in the UK, is it? Is it?? I mean ok, maybe it is. Maybe it's not just another example of insidious Americanisation of speech and culture.

Saying that, we had a fish van come at about 4.30 on a tuesday afternoon and my mum would be RIGHT out there to get prawns and cod roes. Grin We lived in landlocked Surrey so this was a good opportunity to get very fresh seafood - he'd come straight from Grimsby very early that morning. And where I live now has an excellent fish and chips van that has regular nights in all the local villages. It's so popular you need to book your order in, or wait for 45 mins.

Carol44 · 14/06/2022 22:44

But they only play the music when they have run out of ice cream!!
Worked for a few years with my two.

CelestiaNoctis · 15/06/2022 00:41

Omg I hate this!!! I hate the ice cream man in general, no matter what time. But it always seems to be when we're going out or the baby is asleep. They blare the music so loudly and suddenly. And hang around slowly crawling down the street and stop starting. Ours come even during October and they started this year as early as March. And the kicker, I've never seen anyone buy any! Why would you when you can get a multi pack at the shop!

THEDEACON · 15/06/2022 02:26

YABVU the rest of the world does not revolve around your child's bedtime

After 7pm, he changes the name of his 99 to a 420.

For the same reason you’d buy a bag of chips from the chippy instead of frozen ones from the supermarket - it tastes completely different!

VastQuantities · 15/06/2022 06:48

Definitely report to your council. I reported an icecream van which parked right outside my DCs primary school every day. It was breaking the council regulations. There are all sorts of regulations about where they can park, how long they can stay for, when and how long they can play their jingle thing.

NippyWoowoo · 15/06/2022 07:24

If you have a physical reaction to words being mis-spelled, I suggest you consult a docter

Offensive? More offensive that Brits spreading their language through trampling on other people's countries and forcing it on them? 😂

Are you sure he’s selling ice cream and not something else? Seems late to come round at 8 pm.

This. SIL has a sad sorry that she went to buy an ice cream once at Uni from van that regularly toured around studenty streets. They didn't have any ice creams.

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 15/06/2022 08:15

Many moons ago I used to fantasise about sniping the van from my flat, seeing a satisfying explosion as the man ran away dropping choc ices everywhere. YANBU to ask him why he's trying to sell ice cream in term time at bed time.

The area I lived in 25 years ago when I was a child called it an ice cream truck. Sorry if that offends you so.

Islandgirl68 · 15/06/2022 09:26

That's hilarious. 😂

RachaelN · 15/06/2022 16:08

The one near us does the same thing. The other day it was 8.30 pm. We joked that he was selling drugs not ice-cream 😂

mybiggestfan · 15/06/2022 16:16

The code of practice clearly states that Ice Cream Vans can only operate music between the hours of 12 noon and 7pm. They can also only allow the music to continue for 12 seconds.

Shearer292 · 18/06/2022 14:44

This just sums up what parents are like now, way oversensitive and a feeling like their child is more important than anyone else, why should that business change its ways just because you don't like it, they play music for maybe 30 seconds maximum, catch a grip... Life is so much simpler when you keep yourself to yourself

Rosehugger · 18/06/2022 15:27

Fixed that for you.

That just sums up what some businesses are like now, insensitive and feeling that their business is more important than anything else in the world. Why shouldn't that business change its ways if potential customers don't like what they are doing? They should get a grip. Life would be so much more pleasant if they thought about the effect on others for a moment.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 18/06/2022 16:37

Fixed that for you.

I thought everyone had realised a long time ago that this is neither funny nor clever.
