AIBU ice cream truck

Hesalwaysplayinggolf · 12/06/2022 20:23

So we live on a quiet residential road.
My daughter goes to bed at 7pm every night.
3-4 nights a week an ice cream van drives and parks down our road blaring his ice cream truck music. This varies in timing but can be as late as 8pm. Usually between 7-8pm.
This wakes my daughter every time and she takes ages to resettle. She’s genuinely scared.

AIBU to talk to the ice cream man about this?
My husband thinks I’m ridiculous. I think it’s a mickey take to be blaring loud music at 8pm.

We have her window closed and white noise in her room but it still wakes her. I know I could put her to bed once he’s been but he doesn’t come every night so it’s hard to know and she is tired by 7pm.

Fir example tonight dd went to bed at 7pm, I sat down to eat at 7.45 and by 7.50pm he had woken her up. Just got her back down 30mins later.

YABU - Put up with it he’s just earning his living
YANBU - This would annoy me too

If your husband thinks you’re being ridiculous my first suggestion would be that he interrupts his meal every time your child is woken up by the ice cream van, instead of you interrupting yours. If it really isn’t an inconvenience he won’t mind at all.

There is a paper on the gov.uk site about ice cream vans which says that they can only play chimes up until 7:00pm.

I fucking hate ice cream trucks. What is the point?? We have shops and fridges. We do not need a truck with loud out of tune music driving around selling it.

And why only ice cream? What’s next? Cheese trucks? Frozen peas trucks? Dog food trucks? Wine trucks? Tena, Always and Tampax trucks? Condom trucks, driving around at 10 pm trying to catch people who are in the mood but forgot to prepare?

We have a fish and chip truck, he's quite popular in the village.

Katy123g · 13/06/2022 11:13

Like a pp asked are you sure he's selling ice cream? I ask because surely an ice cream vans main customers are kids who have pestered their parents for an ice cream? Are grown adults really going out to an ice cream truck at 7/8pm to buy a 99? Also yanbu, this would piss me off too if it was waking my kids up.

Never knew that, we've had them around recently after 7pm. I mean who is going to want to give a child that anyway not great on their stomach at that time in the eve, and the sugar rush would probably keep some kids up even longer!

So what is an ice cream truck and how is it different from a van? Is it bigger?

Omg 😂

LavenderfortheBees · 13/06/2022 11:23

I used to get one coming round with its tune playing at 10pm in the winter. I always assumed it was selling drugs.

Why do you think adults are the only people still up at 7/8pm? Confused

KyaClark · 13/06/2022 11:24

Ours comes really late. I'm a pretty lax parent but I'm not going to buy him an ice cream at half past 7 on a Sunday when he's ready for bed.

I actually owe my son an ice cream from the ice cream van (I forget why now) but he's not come at a convenient time for three weeks.

VainAbigail · 13/06/2022 11:29

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

can’t make my mind up if you’re taking the mick or not but if you really have no idea about ice cream trucks, the op is annoyed as they play really bloody loud and not very good music!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 13/06/2022 11:30

It is very clear what the OP means

motogirl · 13/06/2022 11:33

Up until 8pm seems reasonable to me, I occasionally buy one too as do my adult children. Even when they were children they weren't in bed before 8pm

‘Van’ is typically British and ‘truck’ is typically American. But you knew that, didn’t you?

There’s occasionally one around our way at 10pm (it also plays a tune) and I assume they’re selling fags, drugs etc.

when I was in halls of residence there was a legitimate ice cream van / truck which came around late on summer evenings. Large campus with hundreds of students living on site. Made a killing.

StridTheKiller · 13/06/2022 11:55

I think OP is in America, hence truck. Not difficult to work that one out 🙄.

Ariela · 13/06/2022 12:08

Report to the council. Legally they can only sound their chimes till 7pm.

paintingcolors · 13/06/2022 12:09

Sugar rush at 8pm before bed ?? No thanks. Do parents actually do this or is it just my kids that would struggle to get to sleep peacefully after a rush of sugar ?

As is wine truck!! I am here for it 😁

onelittlefrog · 13/06/2022 12:28

YABU for not just telling him.

Have a friendly chat and tell him he's waking up your daughter.

He may be very happy to come to your area a bit earlier.

There's a van near me that delivers sandwiches on industrial estates. It plays Food Glorious Food.

queenMab99 · 13/06/2022 12:35

I used to tell my children the man picked his nose and scratched his bum, and had nowhere to wash his hands in the van, so they never asked for one from the van outside school. However I have no solution to the noise waking children up.

What is an Ice Cream Truck?

Some places call it an ice cream van. Others call it an ice cream truck.

Where I grew up, it was ice cream truck. Everyone called it the ice cream truck.

But you knew that. You knew exactly what she was talking about. You were just trying to point out what you believed was a mistake by feigning naivety.

It wasn't a mistake. That's what loads of areas call it. You are very rude.
