To be concerned that the Depp/Heard trial has put off genuine DV victims from coming forward?

The Depp/Heard trial was troubling to me.

On the one hand, people do sometimes make false allegations, especially after relationship breakups.

On the other hand, dragging someone to court for alleging domestic violence might deter some women from reporting it.

Assuming the court got it right and Depp was not a perpetrator, how could he have handled the situation so that it would not put domestic violence victims off coming forward for fear of being sued?

Worrying all round.

Wow. He didn't let her off. Full payment plus 6% interest accrual per year. All upfront if she wants to appeal.

Judge Penney also not allowing any documents to be sealed if any appeal goes ahead.

No injunction on AH requested.

BlanketsBanned · 24/06/2022 17:10

Good for him, what does all upfront mean. Does she get to pay in installments.

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 17:14

He paid the divorce settlement in installments so I guess it makes sense that she can pay this off in installments too, with financial interest if she drags it out. But not if she's going to use the money she owes him to appeal and even bankrupt herself.
I'm not sure about sealed records, though. I don't know whose favour that goes in.

BlanketsBanned · 24/06/2022 17:16

I cant see anything being reported about this

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:17

@BlanketsBanned

She has to have all the money upfront. I'm not sure whether he can take it in lieu of appeal.
Judge Penney was no nonsense either. I suspect AH and EB media behaviour disparaging the jury, talking about evidence not allowed and continued defamation pissed her off. She ran a very fair trial.

It makes sense Depp would not make any offers regarding the settlement whilst there is a threat of appeal. The fact she has to pay the money up front as a bond and the 6% interest is scary. They would of known that so they must be confident of raising the money as they have already spent thousands on transcripts apparently.

BlanketsBanned · 24/06/2022 17:22

What happens if she cannot pay it, what about her lawyers fees, does she need to pay them too.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:23

"I don't know whose favour that goes in"

Heards team applied for this to keep them out of the public sphere going forward as they were all documents/depositions in full.

I guess to pull it all out of the public eye and stop them being used out in the media for the appeal.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:26

@BlanketsBanned I'm not sure? They can liquidise assets and take ongoing income but only up to a point so she can pay her way in life (not one she's been used to, however)

She cannot go bankrupt as she has a defamation verdict against her.

It's certainly going to throttle her income for the future, possibly forever.

Boulshired · 24/06/2022 17:26

the original trial was again apparently covered by Ambers insurance, the insurance representative was at the trial. If she can’t pay she can’t appeal. The insurance usually ends at the loss and doesn’t cover fines.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:27

Thank @Boulshired I'd forgot about that so yes her lawyers fees up until now are covered up to the limit.

Boulshired · 24/06/2022 17:31

What I don’t know is if she puts up the bond does that money go direct to Depp if the appeal is unsuccessful.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:31

Oof it's the 8.35 million plus 6% upfront.

Ouch. Wonder if anyone will sub her for this?

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:32

I'm not sure @Boulshired. I "think" he can take it all now but I need to go down my rabbit hole and find out.

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 17:33

Elon Musk maybe? He's helped her out before.

BlanketsBanned · 24/06/2022 17:35

What about her 2m payment, when does that have to be paid or is it taken off her debt.

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 17:39

So she has to post the settlement of $10.35m + 6% interest for every year it takes to get through the appeal? Coo-eee Elon, darling. 🤑

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:39

@BlanketsBanned it's taken off what she owes, hence the 8.35 instead of 10.35

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 17:41

@LetitiaLeghorn

I'm not sure he will? Her grounds for appeal are poor and unlikely to change anything. Also who is going to pay the legal costs for the appeal? He may as well just write a cheque to Depp now.

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 17:50

Musk did send a tweet saying they were both incredible and hoped they could both move on so maybe you're right and he's not interested. But how else is she going to get that sort of money if not from a friend? I wonder if this is just for show while she tries to amass money doing interviews?

Boulshired · 24/06/2022 18:01

The notes imply that there maybe more items that can now be unsealed and other stuff that won’t be sealed, as it was Elaine arguing against that it’s probably not going to quieten down on SM anytime soon.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 18:05

There's rumours, as she's currently residing in the elite Hampton area that she's got an ACLU top bod with her, who was spotted with her in TK maxx. Notice she's still their ambassador, and that they may stump up? Caveat: rumours, before anyone jumps on me. He does live in the Hamptons though but I'm sure it's all a coincidence.

I hope they don't help her though as they rely on charitable donations from the public for better causes, but then they are up to their necks in this with her.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 18:15

And her spokesperson has just released this.

Rabbitholedigger · 24/06/2022 18:23

Oh. Wow.

JD may launch an appeal himself. He's not letting her off a dime.
