To think this is too much for a year 6 prom dress

Motherinapickle · 08/06/2022 23:08

DD is in year 6. Her friend has got her prom dress from JJ house and DD wanted to have a look on there too so I agreed.

The dress she’s chosen is £53 and will cost £17 to post.
Aibu to think this is too expensive for a year 6 prom?

Her shoes and accessories are yet to be bought!

We can afford it but I’m conscious of not ‘spoiling’. She’s really kind and thoughtful and recognises that we’re privileged and has said so ( with no prompt from me when looking at the dresses). I know she’ll be grateful and take it for granted but I’m still hesitant.

aibu?

ps if anyone can direct me to junior bridesmaid dresses sites that are cheaper, I’d appreciate it very much!

My prom dress was £120 and that was 20 years ago so I’d say that’s a bargain

Lolly1987 · 08/06/2022 23:11

It depends if you can afford it or not. If you can then I don't think it's too expensive. I don't think it's spoiling to treat a kid now and again for a special occasion.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 08/06/2022 23:12

I don't think it's extortionate for a bridesmaid style of dress but if it's more than you want to spend then there will be cheaper options around.

Have you looked at TK Maxx, New Look, Next and Debenhams (online) they all have bridesmaid sections and will also have other 'formal' dresses.

jubileetrain · 08/06/2022 23:13

We can afford it but I’m conscious of not ‘spoiling’.

Giving her a nice dress won't make her spoilt.

Goldencarp · 08/06/2022 23:14

i think that’s fine for a year 6 prom.

RJnomore1 · 08/06/2022 23:14

I’d say £50 for a party dress for a tween is perfectly reasonable as you have said you can afford it. If you can’t afford it it wouldn’t be.

For a year 6 prom? They weren’t a thing when my teens were at school let alone 20 years ago!

FabFitFifties · 08/06/2022 23:15

Since when have year 6 had proms? My son's school aren't . It's just getting ridiculous.

Was going to say the same!

It would have been a bullyfest if there had been a prom when I was in school.

GrandPricks · 08/06/2022 23:17

Year 6? Blimey no chance

Hadalifeonce · 08/06/2022 23:18

£17 postage sounds extortionate.

Hillary17 · 08/06/2022 23:19

I’d say give her an overall budget. Maybe £70 and see what she’d prefer - cheaper dress and then new shoes too etc. it’s a great opportunity to teach her to budget. I think I’d say £50-£70 all in if it’s a big treat and you can afford it.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 08/06/2022 23:19

I have no clue what 11yr old girls would want to wear to a prom but there are a couple of Lipsy Girl dresses in the next clearance section

Having a prom on account on just getting older and moving to secondary school seems more extortionate to me.

Seems like an additional expectation for parents and kids to have to live up to. It is almost (but not quite) as daft as graduation ceremonies for kids leaving nursery.

Moonflower12 · 08/06/2022 23:21

Year 6 Proms have been a thing for a while. My DD is 31 and she had one. It wasn't the first the school held either. They had been going on for a few years by hers.

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2022 23:22

Sounds a lot to me.

DD found a lovely dress on eBay for next to nothing. Good thing too because she never wore it again.

Hadalifeonce · 08/06/2022 23:23

I think you should read the reviews on this company, sounds like a company which uses other companies' photos and makes inferior products, which may or may not arrive.

mizzo · 08/06/2022 23:29

What accessories does an 11 year old require for a school disco prom?

It seems excessive to me, my DD's high school prom dress was about £70 including alterations. Thankfully the year six DC just wear regular clothes, there's a water fight afterwards usually.

Maytodecember · 08/06/2022 23:36

Loads on Vinted under bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses. I put in age 11 and 12 for size.

bridgetreilly · 08/06/2022 23:43

She’s in year 6, no way does she need that sort of dress.

Motherinapickle · 08/06/2022 23:45

Thank you everyone.
I’m relieved to find that iabu and overthinking it, which is what I’d hoped for :)

Oh dear! Her friend’s has arrived and she’s tried it on on taken a photo.

Thank been on eBay but found nothing. She wants a purple dress.

I’ll have a look on Vinted. I didn’t think of that @Maytodecember

Is a “prom” now a thing?
for year 6? Really? Oh dear god!!!
why do we have to copy America in everything??

Hoolahulahoop · 08/06/2022 23:52

If you can afford it I would get it but I do understand it's expensive. Peer pressure ! But it's a one off.

Bettethebuilder · 08/06/2022 23:53

I think that’s too much , plus shoes and accessories? For a 10/11-year-old? Mine just had a leavers’ party at school in the hall. Definitely no special clothes particularly.
