One of our customers came in last week and as he was waiting for his order we got chatting and it turns out he is an amazing opera singer. Looking at him you'd never think it. Think older gent, builder type.

Over the weekend I was somewhere that had a piano so I sat down and played something. Someone commented and said to me that they weren't surprised I could play the piano as I just looked like someone who could.

Is there something about your appearance that would give something away about you or not.

Not a judgy thread, please don't turn this into a bun fight.

Just a fun thread........hopefully.

I am underestimated all the time because of my appearance and receive a fair few comments about it. I’m petite and look younger than my age, but work in a senior role in a challenging professional job. It’s a pain actually!

cowshindtail · 09/06/2022 19:26

I went to collect a secondhand chainsaw which I had bought and the couple commented that I looked a lot more delicate than they thought that I would .Many years ago I was a member of a dog training club whilst at college and was asked what I was studying, when I replied farming the lady said in her broad Sheffield accent "but you are so intellectual".This was the first and last time anyone else said this.

Wallywobbles · 09/06/2022 19:29

My accountant is a hard rock drummer. Prematurely grey with horrible colored specs. Was surprised.

RachaelN · 09/06/2022 19:30

Also my DP looks quite "rough". Shaved head, silver chain, tattoos and peircings. Wears joggers and old t-shirts all the time. Yet he is very talented and intelligent, and one of the most sweet, caring and shy people I know.
We come from completely different backgrounds and probably look quite odd as a couple 😂

DanceIndiaDance · 09/06/2022 19:43

Told I'm too pretty to smoke

Too young to have an 18 year old child

I look like I'm part of a Swedish bobsleigh team (oddly specific!)

I think I have a baby face as I'm 37 but look like my child's twin. I no longer get asked for ID though so I must be aging!😂

mamabear715 · 09/06/2022 19:47

I don't have any skills like you lovely ladies!
I've been told, though, that all my feelings show in my expressions.. horrors!
It seems to be true.. I catch sight of myself & look bored to tears in some settings..

stillsleeptraining · 09/06/2022 19:51

People often assume I'm posh and that I had a very comfortable upbringing, private school etc. It's my face rather than clothes and I have a regional accent.

I actually had a very deprived childhood and there's very little that's posh about me or my life.

girljulian · 09/06/2022 19:52

Yesterday At Sainos the checkout guy was astonished at the date on my ID. It’s 1987; he initially read 1997, then said “wow; keep doing what you’re doing!”

as I said to him at the time, what I’m doing is buying wine…as you see…

GreyEyesGreenHair · 09/06/2022 19:59

I have a shaved head and green Mohawk. I'm also very fond of embroidery. Lots of women assume I am a lesbian, but I'm genuinely not sure why. (I really had to think about the short nails post BlushGrin)

Enjoying reading these...

I would liken my looks, in the good years, to Hilary Duff - something along those lines. Blonde, petite, girl next door vibe. (Now is a different story 😳). But in my late teens and early 20s I was a fairly proficient electric guitar player, mostly into heavy rock and metal. Definitely received an array of comments (mainly ones with strong sexist undertones - you're good for a girl, backstage is for band members only etc).

It was a lot of fun to have something a bit more exciting about me that people didn't expect. I'm a frumpy, invisible Mum now and haven't picked up my electric guitar in a long time. Still get the yearning to get back gigging though!

qtpa2t · 09/06/2022 20:15

Currently mom to toddler and expecting my second baby in a committed long term relationship. Friends I've had at uni are shook at where I am because I was the one who was always nearly kicked out of my apartment, always in terrible financial trouble and doing lots of drugs. If I tell any friends I've made in the last 7 or so years what my life used to be like they're like: you? No way! Because I'm so together now 😅

dcjfr · 09/06/2022 20:24

I used to be a dynamic project manager for an international company and was based in the UK. When in the States for a meeting I met one of the managers I worked with face-to-face for the first time. She said "you are nothing like I imagined". I am overweight (have lost 11kg since then) and not a power dresser though did wear business clothes.

Sausageandeggs · 09/06/2022 20:30

I look professional, normal, and you probably would not look twice in a crowd. I have two tattoo sleeves and I sell skulls as a side gig. On the flip side, those I know in the oddities business can’t get their head around my Disney obsession. 😂

Ddot · 09/06/2022 21:01

I scrub up well but have a fish wife mouth 🤭

ForestFae · 09/06/2022 21:09

I think for the most part, I look like who I am. Alternative, gothy style, lots of tattoos and silver jewellery, often barefoot outside - I’m a home educating pagan artist, so pretty much a stereotype lol. The one where I surprise people is my age - I regularly get people guessing I’m 18-21 when I’m much closer to 30. I don’t find this flattering particularly as it means I’ve been refused paracetamol, butter knives and leg razors among other things in supermarkets.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 09/06/2022 21:25

DD is tiny, very pretty and looks about 16. However, she is a senior doctor in a busy A&E department. I think she manages OK because she has plenty of confidence and an air of authority (and she knows what she is doing). But the patients must be surprised 🤔

MrsPetty · 09/06/2022 21:42

People are always shocked that I’m ‘nice’. I have no clue what I’m doing to make people think I would be anything other 😕 when I ask people what they mean… they never really have an explanation apart from they’re surprised 😂 I think the other thing that would surprise people is that I’m a grateful addict in recovery. Seventeen years on Sunday God willing - one day at a time. Most people apparently can’t even imagine me smoking a cigarette 😂

Shanda5 · 09/06/2022 21:49

People often ask me if I'm a hair dresser. I'm a dentist 😆

NannaKaren · 09/06/2022 22:09

@Shannith You are an amazing person to not drink as are recovering alcoholics - I applaud you xxx

Shannith · 09/06/2022 22:11

Thanks @NannaKaren. The irony is I didn't look like one until I 100% was. Very grateful to be sober and healthy now.

Shannith · 09/06/2022 22:12

@MummysLittleMonkey thank you!

VK456 · 09/06/2022 22:43

I think about this when I watch TV sometimes. If I didn’t know who Torvill and Dean were, I don’t think I’d have them down as ice champions. Yet they are and superb ones at that!

Marotte · 09/06/2022 23:14

Appearances are only deceiving to this extent to the sort of people who make very superficial judgements about other people based on what they look like even when what the judgement is about has nothing to do with appearance. More fool them.

I mean for example what does a good pianist supposedly look like? Could be anyone any age.

3Phoenix3 · 09/06/2022 23:46

Looks - old, fat ,frumpy ,Middle Aged married stay at home mum feeding kids turkey twizzlers and potato smile faces

facts - Oxford graduate, lesbian ,vegan, travelled the world, ex marathon runner, published author, cellist, vegetarian kids but yes I concede a bit old and possibly frumpy couldn’t care less what anyone thinks now

Buggersticks · 10/06/2022 00:00

I look like a middle aged mum I guess, but I can build, plaster, tile, paper, DIY, etc
