To object to my manager arriving at my house

HerveLeger · 06/06/2022 19:34

My line manager turned up at my house at 14:00 today. Rang the doorbell - I didn’t answer because I wasn’t expecting a delivery. I live in the middle of nowhere, I don’t get random callers. I don’t lock my back door. Next thing I know, my manager is in my house. “Just checking”. Apparently I sounded a bit weird in the team meeting this morning. Which is odd, as I didn’t actually speak in the team meeting. Am I BUR to find this completely inappropriate? She is a lovely person and I have had some mental health issues in the past. For which she has been very supportive. But this was one day - half a day, when I wasn’t present at work. She let herself in.. next thing I knew, she was in my sitting room. It was a bit scary :(

OP posts:

She could have been doing a handstand for all I care. Why does it matter if she was sitting or standing?

She let herself in to the OP’s house without such as much as a phone call and we’re all focusing on the fact the OP didn’t answer the door and as long as she didn’t sit on the sofa then that’s fine.

This thread is genuinely nuts.

You were the one that made a big thing about the manager sitting down?

It seemed relatively important to you?

Delatron · 07/06/2022 13:49

@SmartCarDriver the thread doesn’t need any extra drama.

A manger let herself in to an employee’s house and stood (or sat- we don’t know - there you go the all important detail) in her sitting room. Without so much as a phone call. We’d all be ok with that would we? Finding our boss in our sitting room with no warning?

youlightupmyday · 07/06/2022 13:50

We don't know that she didn't call or email ( or teams). OP hasn't mentioned that, I don't think

Delatron · 07/06/2022 13:51

@SmartCarDriver no the sitting on the sofa or standing in the sitting room really wasn’t the important part. It’s irrelevant. You honed it on it for some reason. Maybe to distract from the fact that nobody has the right to enter a house uninvited. And to do so without a phone call first is utterly bizarre

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 07/06/2022 13:52

Shame you weren’t having a shag when she let herself in 😂
Wonder how many posters would stop having sex or a shit to go and rush to answer the door. Or if they have a crippling migraine. Just some examples of why people don’t answer the door for the unimaginative.

The manager was just wanting to be nosy. If she cared she would have called the op rather than go round to her place and trespass.

same with I’m sure those with these go round policies call the person first and their emergency contact when someone doesn’t show up for work. Doubt the first thing they do is go round to their home. Would feel a bit of a twat if in the meantime person shows up to work and they were simply held up. Although this wouldn’t apply for the op, she did “show” up for work.

You added extra drama, ok you don't think she should've done it, but get your facts straight? If you can't read the OP correctly, then make more effort.

It was you all drama "sitting" down etc.

It's also AIBU, people can have a different opinion without saying it's nuts, it's not it's a different opinion.

Delatron · 07/06/2022 13:53

@youlightupmyday

The Op said she checked both phones and there’d been no attempt to call her.

Anyway. Bizarre thread, I’m out.

Yes this is all completely normal, happens all the time.

Dixiechickonhols · 07/06/2022 13:53

Op says no call to her personal or work phone. She says they email throughout day but doesn’t say boss emailed to check if ok.

The op checked both phones - personal and work - there was no calls from the manager

Delatron · 07/06/2022 13:56

@SmartCarDriver I didn’t realise sitting down was so much more dramatic than standing up!

I don’t use the word ‘sitting room’ so misinterpreted that. Makes zero difference to the point I was making. No intention to create drama from saying the boss was sat down. You must lead a sheltered life if sitting is dramatic!

I think you're derailing the thread, she wasn't sitting down, you got it wrong? End of!

Delatron · 07/06/2022 14:03

@SmartCarDriver yes I have said that a few posts ago. I also said it was irrelevant so it’s you who started the derailment (as it doesn’t matter whether she was sitting or standing and such a bizarre thing to focus on).

To be in the right you need to have the facts straight? Yes it would e been odd if someone was making a welfare check and instead of calling out etc, they just went and had a sit down.

Entering the house with the view to ensuring that the OP is safe, therefore being proactive and not sitting down is different.

IMO!

Delatron · 07/06/2022 14:09

@SmartCarDriver The OP found her boss in her living room. Having let herself in. With no call or message to say she was coming.

Just to be clear (because this thread gets stranger by the minute) if she was standing up that is ok because she was being proactive but if she was sat down it would not be ok as that would mean she was just having a sit down. Ok!

It was her sitting room

burnoutbabe · 07/06/2022 14:10

Yes i'd expect someone coming into my hosue to be shouting out "hello, this is Manager X, just come to check you are you okay"

Not just going in quietly.

But maybe manager did do this and the OP didn't hear as was asleep.

InChocolateWeTrust · 07/06/2022 14:11

It is normal to not answer the door.It really is.

It isn't though. Its unusually introverted. I don't know anyone who doesn't answer their door. Unless they are having sex or what have you.

That's how I imagine it would happen.

Delatron · 07/06/2022 14:13

You do know that a ‘sitting room’ ‘living room’ and ‘lounge’ are the same things? @SmartCarDriver or do you want to derail the thread some more because I used the word ‘living room’?!

KarmaStar · 07/06/2022 14:20

You don't say why you were off work so it's difficult to say,had you just not been in contact all morning perhaps it was a genuine welfare visit from a manager who really cares about you.
Why you would find it scary is beyond me,are you timid?
Put it behind you and move on.🌈

katrizia127 · 07/06/2022 14:23

It seems like 19% of people in this thread have never had a job and have no concept of workplace norms, if they think this was appropriate! The manager massively overstepped to such a bizarre level. If there was genuine concern for an employee's safety they should have called the police for a welfare check.

youlightupmyday · 07/06/2022 14:31

@katrizia127 I am one of the 19% and am a senior director. I disagree with you.

And btw the police did come, the OP works for them.

Don't be ridiculous, I have had a job 40 years and I disagree with you.
