Spineless MPs….then he’ll limp along doing even more attention seeking stunts.

Labour are never winning anything with any of their mp’s or the “policies” discussed by them or their voters. What the hell are they even doing?!!

They've been comfortably winning every poll for the last six months and going by the locals will comfortably form a coalition with the Lib Dems and the next election.

A lot of Labour MPs voted for Brexit too though, don't forget, because Brexit was really popular among certain specific demographics within the country that crossed party lines and affiliations. So I disagree that the whole party is tainted by Brexit - many Conservative MPs were active members of the 'Remain' campaign, if you recall.

Yes, and the only remainer conservatives that got ahead, eg Liz Truss, did that by leaving their brains at the door and pretending it was a great idea after all.

(You're right that it's a Labour problem too, but at least Starmer has taken the 'it's happened now and government are running it badly' approach, which is true.)

Summerstink · 06/06/2022 10:35

Of course his replacement is clear. It's 'Anyone But Boris'. A very capable person, them.

Although Jeremy Hunt would be my next best hope. The Tory party has gone way too far to the right and NEEDS to be more central. PLEASE!

Two years is too long to wait. We can't let Johnson suffocate and bury what's left of the trust in the constitution. Without him, it may be resuscitated. Just.

LOL at the official no-10 statement: “Tonight is a chance to end months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on, delivering on the people’s priorities."

Yeah, that's one way of looking at it.

Haha! Yes. They wish...

The other thing that annoyed me was the MP saying that they shouldn't get rid of Boris because he has broad appeal across many parts of the electorate, unlike some other candidates. The fact that he's a hopeless PM and a proven liar clearly doesn't matter to them....

kitcat15 · 06/06/2022 10:36

He will stay

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/06/2022 10:37

It wasn’t the 200k Covid deaths, the handing out of contracts to mates and other corrupt practices involving tax payers money, nor the bungling of Brexit and cost of living crisis that his fellow MPs had an issue with. No it was some royalists booing.

I was under the impression that people (by that I mean some political journalists) think Graham Brady had the letters last week, but didn't want to announce until after the jubilee weekend. So it wasn't necessarily the booing that triggered the last however many letters.

I agree that they've taken their sweet time realising he's awful though.

Peregrina · 06/06/2022 10:37

No it was some royalists booing.

I am surprised that no one suggested that it was caused by Socialist Worker infiltrators. Instead the apologists had to pretend that they didn't hear any booing.

Luckily his removal will mean the likes of Patel, Rees-Mogg, Francois and Dories will never work again.

They'll all walk into highly paid jobs/consultancy roles immediately.

We can't do anything about that, but at least they'll only stink out a private company rather than a whole country.

GreenLunchBox · 06/06/2022 08:35

Yeah, you're most probably right. I actually hope he wins because it'll just damage the Tory party more and more

I agree with you entirely. He'll have another year to cause untold damage to them and make them unelectable. I really hope he wins.

P00rKids · 06/06/2022 10:44

Memory loss is a bugger.

DameHelena · 06/06/2022 10:49

IMO it’s better for Labour if Johnson stays. I think all the other Tory candidates are a horror show, but I think floating voters, if he went, would vote for whoever replaced him on grounds that At Least It’s Not Johnson.
If he stays, more floating voters might find they have to find an alternative to vote for.

Cornettoninja · 06/06/2022 10:50

He’ll win but badly, badly damaged. His own party have publicly declared their lack of confidence in his leadership. His whole brand is toxic.

The obviousness of his bribes to quieten unrest has been noted by all quarters, it doesn’t really matter how successful they might be. He’s a liar and master of misdirection but the veil has been lifted and everything he does from this point on is cheapened and tainted by his previous actions as are the careers of those who are publicly willing to condone his behaviour.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 06/06/2022 10:50

‘They'll all walk into highly paid jobs/consultancy roles immediately.’

Cummings hasn’t found a job since he left so he’s been reduced to sniping from his blog which he pays people to view. Big companies couldn’t afford the poor PR which would go along with hiring any of this lot this is why they are so loyal to Johnson, they know they have very limited options outside his employ. They’ll have to go abroad, work the after dinner speaking events circuit or pray the Daily Mail published excerpts from their predicable and shitty memoirs. Can’t wait!

Yep no way is that a given, if the Tories get rid of BJ, the polls will close very quickly, Starmer isn't popular at all.... and if he has to resign, all bets off, like the Tories, no obvious candidate.

Cameron lost very heavily in the locals in 2012, 3 years later, got a decent majority.

TulipsGarden · 06/06/2022 10:56

If Johnson stays until the next election I think Starmer will do well. He's not very exciting, but he is a safe, intelligent pair of hands.

It's best for Labour if Johnson wins. I've stopped emailing my True Blue Tory MP, let him stay and taint them all.

They probably won't get rid of Johnson though. And there's the rub.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/06/2022 10:58

I've emailed my MP. I've no idea where he stands, though he has worked closely with Gove, so may want to get rid of the PM.

I'm amazed they're clinging onto him, frankly. They used to be so good at getting rid of liability PMs.

Saucery · 06/06/2022 10:58

Nadine Dorries might go back to writing novels Shock Shock

JuliaDomna · 06/06/2022 10:58

I think he will survive because many of the new intake of MPs in the Conservative Party are of the UKIP variety, including my own. They got rid of a lot of Centrists in the 2019 election.

Also he hasn't got Brexit done. He kicked a lot of it into the long grass, like the NI agreement and customs checks at Dover. If he continues as PM he will have to sort that out. His tactic of breaking the NI agreement is likely to result in a trade war with the EU and we will be forced to import on WTO terms leading to increased prices. Breaking a legal international agreement they themselves negotiated would also lead to repercussions for other trade agreements, particularly with the USA as well as the UK's reputation.

I think we are in for some tough times ahead if he remains. He isn't a strategic thinker, he is a populist. He will go for a scattergun approach with easy targets such as extending the RTB of housing association housing stock which will lead to further long term structural problems in the housing market. The man is absolute disaster.

BadAtMaths2 · 06/06/2022 11:01

I hope it will weaken him enough to mean there's a genuine leadership bid to come forward. Party gate was just a symptom - he's got no real policies, has surrounded himself with really weak Ministers who won't challenge him. There's no real heavy weights left. In order to have a strong opposition you need a Govt with real policies that can be argued against.

He's a disaster for British politics.

But that alternative won't be Labour for many people.

sashagabadon · 06/06/2022 11:03

It’s seems such a random selection to me. Pro remain tories that can’t and won’t forgive him for brexit and pro leave mp’s that think he doesn’t go hard enough on brexit and culture issues and shouldn’t be raising taxes. So complete opposite types want him give but for completely opposite reasons 🙄
