Spineless MPs….then he’ll limp along doing even more attention seeking stunts.

Millions of people broke the laws. What a waste of time and money all these allegations and "investigations" have been.

Millions more didn't, they obeyed them to the letter.

It's a pity that our PM didn't think he needed to set an example then there need not have been any money spent on investigations. Johnson could then have spent the time doing what he was supposed to be doing all along, which was provide leadership and see that the money was spend wisely on what the country needed.

Do you think there is an appetite for a brand new party now? A decent alternative for the UK. They all seem to be cut from the same cloth now.

TheFoodtheFadandtheFugly · 06/06/2022 12:38

He will win today because there is no viable alternative that can defeat him.
The Toris will win the next election because there is no viable alternative that can defeat them.
The system, voting trends, party mechanics, political moves, all ensure this.

Why are you so sure that Labour would win

the election is possibly another 2 1/2 years away

Starmer should be streets ahead and is isn’t something isn’t working for Labour but they can bury their head in the sand if they want

Tories still have time to line up a leader that will allowing them to still win a majority

Starmer and Labour are ahead enough as it stands. You can say it should be better, and you might be right, but it is still enough right now for a comfortable coalition. We can take it as read a lot can happen in 2 years but that works both ways - the tories can get even more unpopular.

Getting rid of Starmer now and having another long-winded leaership competition would be disastrous optics.

TokyoSushi · 06/06/2022 12:40

Not RTFT but have had the news on in the background all morning. Earlier on, I was pretty convinced that he would win, but there's quite a lot of people coming out now saying that they won't support him, more than I thought.

Either way, I think that he's on the way out, even if it's not today. Goodness knows who we'll get then.

Alexandra2001 · 06/06/2022 12:42

Eh? Labour aren't going to throw the next election away by changing leaders now, especially if Johnson stays. That makes no sense

They may have too, should Durham Police issue a FPN or two.

The stars may yet align for another Houdini escape for Bojo..... i really want him to stay... Labour are fools constantly calling for him to go.

Well obviously if he's fined he's got to go (and it would look awful for Johnson) but that's a different argument.

RishiRich · 06/06/2022 12:46

I really hope you're wrong. People can't afford to live because this lying, self-entitled idiot is leading a government full of lightweights who cannot grasp their briefs. At this point, anyone except Jacob Rees-Mogg and his disgusting cronies would do a better job of PM and gave more credibility than Johnson.

Cornettoninja · 06/06/2022 12:46

do they? We keep being told there’s simply no one else?

(I’m being factitious, of course there are other viable candidates)

I don’t think they’re fools but it would be hard to refer back to his indiscretions without facing accusations yourself if you didn’t call them out at the time.

Christsonsomebikes · 06/06/2022 12:48

If he stays, can the people demand a vote of no confidence against him and thehalf-wits/ cowards that vote for him to stay?

I do hope he does, because there is a risk he hasn't yet completely destroyed the Tory party yet.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 06/06/2022 12:51

‘Thank god I live in scotland & we will sooner than later get to leave this shit show of a union where selfish twats continually vote Tory whilst pensioners can't afford to eat & heat their homes. BOAK.’

Its the pensioners who are voting Tory. The DM have probably commissioned Andrew Neil to write an ‘article’ with the word ‘woke’ in every sentence alongside pictures of Kier Starmer kneeling or stood next to Corbyn as a distraction as we speak. Many of the pensioners will then forget they are hungry and cold and line up to vote Tory at the next snap election.

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 06/06/2022 12:55

Its a secret vote isn't it? Which means people can say publicly they support him but privately vote against him?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 06/06/2022 12:57

He will win, but he may be fatally wounded. If you want the Tories out at the next GE, the best result is a narrow win for Boris.

Personally, despite having got to my 50s without ever voting Tory, I can no longer vote Labour/LibDem because of their misogyny, so I am reluctantly forced to hope that Boris loses and is replaced by Jeremy Hunt or another grown up.

User487216 · 06/06/2022 12:57

As long as it is not lockdown lover Hunt to replace him

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 12:59

The tories may well win another GE with a different leader , it's happened before.

AmaryIlis · 06/06/2022 13:01

hepaticanobilis · 06/06/2022 08:35

Yes, the timing is annoying because if he wins tonight he'll then be safe from a further vote for a whole year. He seems to be determined to stay and not go voluntarily.

Not necessarily. It's been confirmed that that's a rule that is perfectly easy to change, they came near to doing it for May.

AmaryIlis · 06/06/2022 13:03

daretodenim · 06/06/2022 08:39

The reason he'll win is because there's no one obvious to replace him now that dishy rishi has been shown to have a tax dodging missis.

Someone skeptical may surmise that the reason we know about Rishi's tax-dodging wife at all is so that in this situation this would be the outcome.

No-one though there was anyone obvious to replace Thatcher, but they managed it.

HRTQueen · 06/06/2022 13:03

Tories have no one lined up at the moment that has been pushed forward apart from Hunt pushing himself forward

that can very quickly change

a few in the back ground Tobias Ellwood I think would be a possible candidate

Labour need to concentrate on themselves and look at where they are, where they are going which at the moment isn’t promising at all

AmaryIlis · 06/06/2022 13:06

RoseLunarPink · 06/06/2022 08:40

Also you can’t ditch him for partygate and then have Rishi who was also fined.

But I do think there are some possible alternatives. Javid is one. Unfortunately more likely to get Gove. I bet they’d vote Rory in now if they had the chance.

They probably won't want to risk Javid with some of their more right wing supporters. And Gove has a few too many skeletons in the cupboard.

LOL at the official no-10 statement: “Tonight is a chance to end months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on, delivering on the people’s priorities."

Yeah, that's one way of looking at it.

LOL. He's so desperate for us all to "move on", isn't he? But you only have to look at the by election polling to see that isn't going to happen.

forinborin · 06/06/2022 13:10

I really hope he stays.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/06/2022 13:13

I'm amazed anyone thinks Gove might be in the running though. My feeling is that he is having to be very carefully managed by the party at the moment due to some personal issues.

I think your suspicions are not to be sniffed at.

I think that comment wins the thread :-)

More seriously, I think Gove has no chance anymore. The grass roots don't like druggies and his batshit antics have lost him the perception of competence he once had.
