Clotted cream

No clotted cream in our local M&S left today 🙈 my scones will have to have butter on them tomorrow. Think M&S should have foreseen mad rush for clotted cream and stocked up. Devastated. AIBU? The only other local shop I have is Aldi so will walk with baby and try them later.

I have obviously been the recipient of extreme good fortune today! We got back from holiday this morning, I had a Tesco delivery booked for 1-2 pm, and both the scones and the cream showed up Shock

potteringinmysocks · 02/06/2022 17:08

YANBU jubilee is ruined! Damn M&S!!!! Log with 101.

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2022 17:10

Should I put mine on eBay? Grin

meltypuff · 02/06/2022 17:16

DH has come back from Aldi. Empty shelves!- no clotted cream, jam, scones, ketchup, mayonnaise etc. He said poor woman working there looked a bit stressed!

Do you think people believe the supermarkets will be shut tomorrow or something? Or literally everyone is having a picnic and cream tea and there's been a huge rush on?

xsquared · 02/06/2022 17:18

I made a Victoria sponge instead.

If I had enough cream, I would have made Devonshire buns instead but DH and DD are using it for the Jubilee pudding.

I think the "Don't you know you should have bought your clotted cream last week?" people are being unreasonable and smug. So there.

I work in Lidl. Unloaded six trays of clotted cream at 7, doors opened at 8 and they were all gone by 9.
Spent the hours of 9-1 being shouted at because there was no clotted cream.

That's really awful @AlexCabot . I hope you've got annual leave tomorrow.

Testina · 02/06/2022 17:23

What makes you think they didn’t anticipate it?
They will have done.
But there’s a balancing act between maximising your sales and minimising your write offs with unsold clotted cream.
Unlike forecasting variables like price promotion point and weather, a Platinum Jubilee is a rather less common event.
You could pull in data from summer Royal weddings, Wimbledon, Olympics 2012… but you’re never going to get it right.
Literally used to be my job 🤓

BlueBloodedBlue · 02/06/2022 17:28

According to my friend who works there, our local M&S is expecting a delivery of scones and clotted cream tomorrow morning. I assume others will too so if you're bright and early you maybe lucky.

BigSkies2022 · 02/06/2022 17:35

I am now very worried. I made scones, put them in the freezer and will be taking them to my mother's house tomorrow, with a couple of nice pots of jam, in the expectation that she would be providing the clotted cream. I hope this shortage has not extended to Devon, the home of the cream tea.

There is always a slight atmosphere when we have cream tea at my parents' house though: I assemble the scone correctly (Devon born and bred, cream first, then jam, obviously) while my mother (Cornish, crossed the Tamar later in life, kept going back) purses her lips, looks aghast, and tries to get the cream to sit properly on the slippy, sloppy surface created by the jam that she has erroneously applied first.

Jaxhog · 02/06/2022 17:36

Waitrose? Ours had some yesterday.

I agree with ^ . I also think those saying that a pp's friend could 'just' knock up a batch if scones with basic store cupboard ingredients, smug. I am a good cook, especially known for my baking and have made many celebration cakes, including wedding cakes, over the years. My cakes are known for being deliciously light and moist. BUT, in all my years, I have never managed to produce a scone that was any lighter than a brick. I must have tried about 20 recipes over the years, including several so-called foolproof ones. Never had one that is a success, so now I just buy them.

Interested to read more about baking double cream to make clotted cream and will definitely give this a go next time I buy scones.

Testina · 02/06/2022 17:44

And to continue my defence of the poor planners 🤓…
In the past, I’ve had the equivalent of a bloody accurate plan that’s been fubar’d by suppliers! M&S might have asked for lots more clotted cream in good time - then the dairy couldn’t get enough packaging because there’s a global shortage on solid board.

xsquared · 02/06/2022 17:45

Love this! 😁

I'm definitely a cream first person.

Just goes to show @Erictheavocado, I’m a useless cook and baker but I’ve yet to make a bad batch of scones. If I’m getting it right, it’s purely accidental.

Caspianberg · 02/06/2022 17:57

Mascarpone is the best substitute if you can’t get any.

QuestionableMouse · 02/06/2022 17:58

I had extra thick double on mine today. Nice and probably the most similar to clotted.

I don't think planning ahead equates to 'smug' does it? Just organised. It's not like the jubilee cream tea idea was sprung on us last minute. Grin

xsquared · 02/06/2022 18:08

@Sparklingbrook Chastising others for not being as organised as you are is smug though.

NotMeekNotObedient · 02/06/2022 18:12

There were no scones or bunting to be had at my local Asda yesterday.

I brought double cream and whipped it. Did a de-tour to a local bakery chain who had loads of scones!

No luck with the bunting though.

Should have been more organised!

I was going to make a jubilee Swiss roll but my tesco delivery didn't have ground almonds. Everything else arrived so I've got flaked almonds, eggs, butter and whipping cream what will I do with those? Maybe I'll have to bake some scones and serve with whipped cream - done it before and yes it's different to clotted but still tastes lovely, especially with a different type of jam (blueberry or blackcurrant).

woopdedoodle · 02/06/2022 18:19

I have made clotted cream before, but this time I've made my own golden syrup and we'll be having date and walnut Florentines instead.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/06/2022 18:26

Slightly off topic, but I put Jam and Philadelphia on mine... in that order
