WTF has happened to ice cream?

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:02

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

If you mean saturated fats then no, not unhealthy

I hate Ben and Jerry's and won't even buy that when it's half price. I still mourn tha Haagen Dazs macadamia brittle ice cream that I can't find anymore.

HD do 'collections' where you get 4 little pots in a box. The vanilla version has macadamia nut brittle: groceries.asda.com/product/ice-cream-tubs/haagen-dazs-vanilla-minicup-ice-cream-collection/1000112420175

There’s no sugar in cheese. I can’t overeat it, it’s too filling.

Ok good for you. 100g of cheese which is a relatively small size has 33g of fat.

I will use a macaroni cheese dish as an example of butter, cream and cheese full of fat. It isn’t just the sugar in a Starbucks that makes it high calorie. We just need to eat dairy in moderation like all other foods.

Vegan ice cream might be nice and I understand the need for those with dairy allergies, but it isn't healthier. It's even more full of emulsifiers and gums that promote inflammation, including the notorious carageenan.

Jude's vegan vanilla ingredients:
Oat Base (66%) [Water, Oat (7%), Sunflower Oil], Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Coconut Oil, Soluble Corn Fibre, Soya Protein Isolate, Dextrose, Emulsifier: Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Stabilisers: Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum and Carrageenan, Vanilla Extract, Salt, Natural Flavouring, Spent Vanilla Bean, Natural Colour: Carotenes.

I repeat: haagen Das vanilla ice cream ingredients:
Fresh Cream (39%), Condensed Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolk, Vanilla Extract.

It might be more ethical but it's way less natural and more processed.

Hmm... But who is eating ice cream to be healthy?!!? It is a treat, not one of your 5 a day

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:12

Booja Booja chocolate ice cream is vegan and has four ingredients. Grin

Make some! It's much easier than the manufacturers would have you believe.
I made a gorgeous elderflower sorbet last night, God knows how much Waitrose would have charged for it as there must be at least 100 scoops.

That sounds lovely - do you have a recipe please?

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:14

I’ll be very surprised if vegans eat a diet that contains a lot of the highly processed products on supermarket shelves live longer, just as I don’t think omnivores who knock back a lot of Frappuccinos will do too well

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:16

You can't argue with the average. Obviously that will include some unlucky and some unhealthy vegans. I'm unhealthy af and doubt I'll get my fifteen years. @Fidodidit

Still, why hurt animals and the planet and myself?

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:19

if my DDs were vegan, I’d be paying a lot more attention to what they ate inews.co.uk/news/environment/teenage-girls-mineral-deficiencies-meat-dairy-vegan-vegetarian-1392816

I was replying to Innocenta (I think) who had said this:

"I don't really care if you don't like vegan ice cream. Plenty of people do, so the word 'wrong' is just... irrelevant, basically. It's right for many, many, many people who happily buy it, whether for ethical, preference, health, or allergy reasons."

My bolding.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:21

🙄

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:23

I haven’t heard that 15 year figure before. Anything I’ve seen seemed to suggest the jury was out due to overall lifestyle factors. I’ll be very surprised if that relates to vegans who centre their diet around highly processed foods and I think that will be a large proportion of more recent vegans, in with much of the population who aren’t vegan.

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 12:23

100g of cheese which is a relatively small size has 33g of fat.

So what? Fat’s good for you. Move into the 21st century, the low fat mantra has been debunked.

Worldgonecrazy · 01/06/2022 12:34

Has anyone mentioned the best gelato in the world (having partaken of a large sample!)

Baboo Gelato from Dorset. Luckily it is stocked by lots of local farm shops.

If you’re heading that way on holiday I can recommend any of their flavours .

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:39

I’d really recommend the Ethical Dairy if you see any of their ice cream in stock. It only talks about their cheese on their website but I hope they succeed in what they are trying to do www.theethicaldairy.co.uk

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:43

I see they are using their milk for Cream o Galloway ice cream now, it seemed to be under a separate “Ethical Dairy” brand for a while

mustlovegin · 01/06/2022 12:44

But who is eating ice cream to be healthy?

Good quality wholesome dairy ice cream is full of natural calcuim and a excellent source of energy

Blackmagicqueen · 01/06/2022 12:45

*"MagnoliaTaint · Yesterday 23:04

Had Co-op's Venezualan Chocolate tonight which was actually just nice standard chocolate icecream."*

I don't agree as it is far superior to asdas own or ben and Jerry's etc.

Which supermarket icecream would you class as better than that? As obviously you can't compare to icecream and gelato independents as they wouldn't be in the same league. Brymore icecream farm icecream shop in Yorkshire is a firm favourite of mine if talking about those.

Blackmagicqueen · 01/06/2022 12:47

You are being facetious here. Perhaps I should have been clearer. People do not generally eat cheese on its own, it is used as an ingredient in dishes hot and cold and accompanied by other products many of which are high calorie of salt fat and sugar. Same as milk. People nowadays do not wake up drink a pint of plain milk they add it to sugary cereals, sugary smoothies and coffees from Starbucks. Dairy is not used the same way as it was in the 1950’s. Ice cream is recognised as a treat obviously. But people consume a lot of dairy they don’t think about in these other products. Whole milk, cream and hard cheese can often bump up the calories enormously

re and fat, humans need a daily % of fat obviously, but a HIGH fat and salt diet is not good for you long term and related to diabetes and heart disease

dairy is a filler or ingredient in so many things. When you try to avoid it because it gives you uncontrollable bowels - that’s when you realise how tough it is to avoid

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 12:50

Blackmagicqueen · 01/06/2022 12:47

Brymor*

Oooooooh, Brymor! Their banana and mango is orgasmic. Every time I eat it on holiday I’m grateful I don’t live in the Dales - I’d be the size of a small planet.

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 12:51

You are being facetious here

I’m not.

Blackmagicqueen · 01/06/2022 12:59

"Many years ago Asda did a custard ice cream and that was gorgeous."

Yes they also did a mascarpone icecream that was amazing. It was in the days where magnums were actually nice with very thick chocolate and creamy icecream. Lidle's gelatelli version is much nicer today.
