WTF has happened to ice cream?

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:02

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

Do you mean a piña colada?

Yes, I think I did. Pina colada is the coconutty one, rather than a margarita. Although I'm intrigued to give Nigella's margarita ice-cream a whirl now.

Plus, why all the love for Mackies, bleugh. Sweet, air filled. Moderate.
I disliked Mackies even more after I found out that they also make even worse air filled "ice cream" for Aldi under different branding.

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 01/06/2022 09:37

I've stopped buying supermarket ice cream as it's so disappointing. I don't really like Magnums, Cart d'Or or any of those brands.

We buy tubs of gelato from the local Italians and chippies, all of which have an amazing selection. It feels expensive but it lasts, there's loads of good flavours and it tastes so good.

I have made my own 2-ingredient ice cream from whipped double cream and condensed milk. It was amazing and really easy. You can add chocolate chips, caramel, raspberry purée, whatever you like. It's very creamy so depends if you like that.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 09:41

@mustlovegin Actually vegan ice cream is great Grin

To the PPs mourning the loss of Haagan Daaz Macadamia Nut Brittle you can still get it in one of the mini tub 4 packs they do. I think it’s with little tubs of Vanilla, Pralines & Cream and Cookies & Cream. We always argue over who gets it 😂

Thanks I'll have a look!

Cherryblossoms85 · 31/05/2022 23:35

@yesthatisdrizzle aaah raspberry ripple! People think I'm posh until I ask for that flavour 😂

Posh? You wanna be posh?

Just ask for 'Madagascan Vanilla with a Marbling of Raspberry Coulis' instead.
😂

For those wanting to make their own but without the faff/expense/space of an ice cream maker, I recommend this recipe: www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/p/plum-cinnamon-crumblewithgingericecream.html

I've made it several times and it's bloody lovely, and I've varied it too - I made a peanut butter cup by:

  • lining a tupperware tub with clingfilm, pouring in a thin layer of melted chocolate and leaving it to set;
  • warming some peanut butter in the microwave to make it more spreadable;
  • spreading it over the chocolate and leaving it to cool;
  • melting some more chocolate and spreading it over the peanut butter then leaving it too cool again, and
  • taking it out of the tub (hence the clingfilm!), chopping it into small bits and stirring it into your ice cream.

Can anyone recommend an i/c maker, then?

Tesco have Wicked Kitchen which is OK for the lactose intolerant & comes in choc cookie dough & mint choc chip flavours. Magnums also come in vegan versions now.

CO-OP once did a blood orange & something sorbet which was gorgeous. And a local restaurant made a dark chocolate sorbet which was divine.

this one is mine and I love it...takes up kitchen space and is a considered purchase though www.nisbets.co.uk/buffalo-ice-cream-maker/dm067

MumofCrohnie · 01/06/2022 11:23

Vegan ice cream might be nice and I understand the need for those with dairy allergies, but it isn't healthier. It's even more full of emulsifiers and gums that promote inflammation, including the notorious carageenan.

Jude's vegan vanilla ingredients:
Oat Base (66%) [Water, Oat (7%), Sunflower Oil], Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Coconut Oil, Soluble Corn Fibre, Soya Protein Isolate, Dextrose, Emulsifier: Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Stabilisers: Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum and Carrageenan, Vanilla Extract, Salt, Natural Flavouring, Spent Vanilla Bean, Natural Colour: Carotenes.

I repeat: haagen Das vanilla ice cream ingredients:
Fresh Cream (39%), Condensed Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolk, Vanilla Extract.

It might be more ethical but it's way less natural and more processed.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 11:31

Dairy is inherently unhealthy so generally better not to consume it, although I agree vegan ice cream is not exactly the healthiest plant based food! @MumofCrohnie Obviously I'm not suggesting it's suitable for someone like your DD with a specific sensitivity.

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 11:35

Why is dairy unhealthy?

Menora · 01/06/2022 11:38

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 11:35

Why is dairy unhealthy?

I have an intolerance but i understand it’s got pros and cons. I drink almond and it’s low calorie and a good protein and less irritating to me
a lot of dairy products are very high fat and easy to over eat (cheeses, cream)

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 11:40

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 11:35

Why is dairy unhealthy?

It’s not. The myth of fat being the devil’s work was debunked some time ago when rickets made a reappearance. We need the calcium it provides.

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 11:41

It’s far harder to overeat something that is high fat than high sugar. Try drinking a pint of cream.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 11:42

It's not unhealthy because it contains fat 🙄

Menora · 01/06/2022 11:54

You can easily over eat cheese and I frequently used to! Same for all the Starbucks frapps, giant milkshakes from most fast food places etc - a lot of dairy and sugar easily consumed

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 11:57

This is an interesting and detailed source which discusses other studies too:

TabbyM · 01/06/2022 11:57

@HelloMaryJane Lucas is lovely. As is Mackies, their cafe 19.2 in Aberdeen is splendid too with traditional and weird (buttery &jam). Big shout out to Taylors of Biggar, so sad the Townhead cafe has closed :(

There’s no sugar in cheese. I can’t overeat it, it’s too filling.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:00

@Blossomtoes You are a sample of one Hmm

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 12:00

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 11:42

It's not unhealthy because it contains fat 🙄

Your first link says exactly that 🙄 It’s also clearly funded by the plant food industry.

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 12:00

Frappuccinos and “milkshakes” have tonnes of sugar and reconstituted milk powders full of emulsifiers. The fat content isn’t the problem.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:05

@Blossomtoes The type of fat and the other content of dairy contributes to why it's unhealthy, yes, but it's not a blanket 'fat in the diet is bad'. So please don't try to misrepresent what anyone else is saying, thanks!

And as if the push to promote dairy as healthy for decades hasn't been funded by the dairy industry...! You are ridiculous.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 12:07

Quite apart from our own health (and vegetarians do live on average seven years longer than omnivores, for vegans it's fifteen years...), there's the question of ethics. Check out this film:
