WTF has happened to ice cream?

Tock · 31/05/2022 20:02

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

OP posts:
JustDanceAddict · 01/06/2022 08:12

i only like the posh tubs or a magnum!

haagen daasz strawberry cheesecake is yummy!

Mackies is the best ice cream this country has to offer. It's pretty good really.

(I still miss NZ ice cream. Only 7 months till I get to eat some again.)

The vanilla doesn’t taste of much.

MissConductUS · 01/06/2022 00:52

Ben & Jerry's is still my go to brand, Cherry Garcia in particular.

I love that but you don’t see it in the uk any more 😞

You need to explore some different brands if you think thats the best we have to offer!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/06/2022 08:15

I've just taken possession of a tub of Ben And Jerrys that has been sitting in our patient freezer for several weeks. Think the owner has been long discharged 😂

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:17

@EmotionalBruises Vegans live rent free in some people's heads!

Greensleeves · 01/06/2022 08:18

I think it's a bit of a reach to call OP's dislike of vegan ice-cream "anti-vegan" Confused

Lots of people don't like certain foods. It doesn't mean they loathe the people who do eat them, does it? Vegan "ice-cream" does taste wrong, to those who really love dairy ice cream. Vegan cheese is, without exception, the Devil's own smegma. To anyone who loves cheese, it's an abomination. It doesn't mean we hate vegans, just that we don't enjoy those foods.

I don't like Spam or any tinned cheap meat, and have been known to make lurid comments about how disgusting it is. DH is similarly turned off by sweetcorn. DS1 describes mushrooms as "those slimy dodgy little bastards". Is he bashing people who like them? Is he fuck. Don't be so bloody fragile.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 08:24

@Greensleeves It doesn't taste 'wrong'. That is totally different from saying you personally don't like something. It's a quickly growing market so nebulous claims about wrongness are just mud slinging.

OP can have her own opinion and doesn't have to like vegan ice cream, but being deliberately insulting and calling it 'shit' is anti vegan, yes.

MumofCrohnie · 01/06/2022 08:31

Jude's, Mackie's, Ben and Jerry's and Kelly's (and cheap ice creams) all contain emulsifiers and/or gums.

Since my daughter's inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis I have found out these promote inflammation in the gut.

We but HaagenDas vanilla which is one of the very few that is literally cream, sugar and egg. Some of the Tesco luxury range are also without stabilisers and emulsifiers.

Example: Jude's vanilla bean ice cream ingredients:
Fresh Whole Milk, Sugar, Clotted Cream (11%), Fresh Double Cream, Skimmed Milk Powder, Pasteurised Free Range Egg Yolk, Dextrose, Stabilisers (Locust Bean Gum and Guar Gum), Vanilla Extract, Spent Vanilla Bean

HaagenDas vanilla ice cream ingredients:
Fresh Cream (39%), Condensed Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolk, Vanilla Extract

LadyLothbrook · 31/05/2022 23:12

@Cloudburst3 No but I can find out in the morning and come back to you.

That would be great!
I make a lot of home made ice cream. You just need a good basic recipe, and then you add the flavouring. I make a lot of alcoholic ice cream, but spearmint and orange blossom (just add from the bottles you get at Pakistani shops) are delicious too. Liquorice is a really difficult one though - no success so far.

But it does taste wrong - to me, and to OP, and to many others to whom ice cream means "made with dairy cream". Lots of things taste wrong to me - it's entirely subjective.

It isn't anti-vegan to dislike vegan alternatives to popular foods. It isn't anti-anyone to dislike certain foods, especially ones designed to mimic and replace things you do like. I think andouillette sausage both tastes and smells like shit. It doesn't mean I'm anti-French - it just means I think that sausage is disgusting.

She could have said ‘I don’t like the plant based ice creams’ but no, it was calling out ‘vegan shite’.

SabrePrattler · 31/05/2022 20:50

This is the one for me. Like an ice cream margarita

www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/no1-coconut-lime-ice-cream/019922-9702-9703

Do you mean a piña colada?

Maisa45 · 01/06/2022 08:51

plant based vegan shit.

God forbid the shops cater to people who don't want to consume cow lactation. Grow up - no one's making you buy it.

onlyhereforthefood · 01/06/2022 09:00

LadyLothbrook · 31/05/2022 22:59

I habe an ice cream van and we have just got a licorice flavour whippy in to try (not by choice)...I can't wait to see how it goes down.

I want to hunt you down and try this!

axolotlfloof · 01/06/2022 09:08

TimeTravelSickness · 31/05/2022 20:47

I quite like some of the ‘plant based vegan shit’ occasionally. 😂

This is my preference too.
DS1 like the Yoghurt! Frozen!

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 09:08

@Greensleeves Since you aren't vegan, it's fair enough that you aren't aware of the proliferation of anti vegan threads in recent months on MN. But actually it is nasty and unnecessary (which many people agree does amount to 'anti') to persistently insult and use very foul language about one group of people's food.

I don't really care if you don't like vegan ice cream. Plenty of people do, so the word 'wrong' is just... irrelevant, basically. It's right for many, many, many people who happily buy it, whether for ethical, preference, health, or allergy reasons. Let us enjoy it and stop making nasty remarks.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 09:10

@PriamFarrl exactly. No one actually expects the entire world to suddenly stop eating all dairy overnight (although it would be nice, haha). Just let vegans and plant based eaters and people with milk allergies have our own stuff.

MigsandTiggs · 01/06/2022 09:12

@WatermelonSugarEye I make my own elderflower cordial, bung it in my ninja with ice cubes - bingo instant sorbet! Will try adding gin now😁

mustlovegin · 01/06/2022 09:17

YANBU OP.

Vegan 'ice cream' is absolutely vile, and the wacky flavours they constantly come up with are most likely to hide how disgusting the product ends up being after all the substitutes have been put in (and also to justify inflated prices)

HaagenDas vanilla ice cream ingredients:
Fresh Cream (39%), Condensed Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolk, Vanilla Extract

Thank you @MumofCrohnie I've always shunned HaagenDas as I had the misconception that it was too artificial, but it doesn't seem to be at all

Anybody rememeber Baskin Robbins shops?
Me! I loved their coconut and pineapple ice cream

WhereDidTheYearsGo · 01/06/2022 09:21

I rediscovered Viennetta recently. Cheap as chips and food of the gods.

Brefugee · 01/06/2022 09:22

we have a Ben & Jerry's ice cream recipe book and have made several (not for a while though) they do call for full fat milk, cream and eggs though - and their recipies don't use the "cooked custard" type version so some people may not fancy it, but the ones we tried were delicious.

Especially the New York Super Fudge Chunk, Maple Walnut, and Georgia Peach.

Haagen Dazs is delicious. Their Strawberries and Cream ice-cream tastes exactly as its name suggests it should.

Menora · 01/06/2022 09:27

I can’t eat ice cream as its dairy 😭
this thread has been a hard read (I want some now so badly)
