To have people comment I'm paranoid continuing to use 'baby' monitor

My wee one is nearly 3 and I still religiously use baby monitor every night, I don't think I'd settle without it, it's rarely needed as wakening up at night is very rare but I've had a few comments from family/friends that I'm being ridiculous and far too over protective. It's really annoyed me to be fair, any alone else still use their monitor for older kids?

We have ours on but haven't had the sound on for like 2 years, she's nearly 3. Just there to be nosey basically.

AperolWhore · 30/05/2022 21:01

Wow I’m definitely OTT with you then, my daughter is almost three and I still use the monitor and breathing pad! I know when she moves into a toddler bed we’ll have to stop using the breathing pad but I’ll definitely still be using the monitor!

maythe4thbewithme · 30/05/2022 21:02

Yeah it's a bit weird. That age they can get out of bed themselves and come and find you?

Letsbekindplease · 30/05/2022 21:04

My boy is nearly 3 and we still use it for him. More out of habit, but I like to see what he’s up too especially when he wakes through the night and not sure if he’s going to come in our bed or not.

i don’t see anything wrong with it at all so don’t worry.

maythe4thbewithme · 30/05/2022 21:04

@AperolWhore

You know breathing pads aren't effective once they can roll?

Doggyfish · 30/05/2022 21:05

Happierthanever91 · 30/05/2022 20:31

Personally, I think you should use it for as long as you want to. Don't pay no mind to anyone else's opinions of it as someone's will always differ from yours. Whatever makes you feel at ease is all that matters

I think so too. Better to use it for too long than for too short a time.

namechangetheworld · 30/05/2022 21:05

We have DDs 3 and 6 and still use baby monitors for both. I've never considered it weird before reading this thread.. If we didn't use them we wouldn't be able to hear them calling out when we're downstairs, and I don't fancy the idea of half asleep children navigating the stairs to come and find us.

bumbledeedum · 30/05/2022 21:06

We still have a video monitor for our 3 year old, we wouldn't hear him from the back of the house without it and it means we know if he's messing around rather than going to sleep - frequent occurrence at the moment! No one else's business what works for your family

avocadotofu · 30/05/2022 21:06

We still use one with our 3.5 year old so I don't think you're odd.

ThePiggery · 30/05/2022 21:07

I don't see why anyone would need a baby monitor for a child who is old enough to get up and come to your room or call down to you tbh.
However, I don't live in a huge house (4 bed semi) and can easily call across the landing to my son or they can come into my room 🤷‍♀️

AliceW89 · 30/05/2022 21:09

2 year old DS is a reliable sleeper and we still have a sound monitor on. Just hadn’t occurred to me to stop really. I can’t believe people would have strong opinions either way to be honest. It really is pretty inconsequential.

SundayTeatime · 30/05/2022 21:09

We never had them at all with our DC, not even as babies, but I suppose it’s fine if you want to use them.

ibblebibbledibble · 30/05/2022 21:12

ours broke when my first born was about 2 weeks old and never replaced it. I never really got the need for it, any little sniffle I could hear him from about 3 miles away! Then we coslept anyway, so never had any need for it.

TheNinny · 30/05/2022 21:14

Same. DD 2.5. I still use ours so I don’t have to sleep with doors open etc or worry I’ll miss something. She can’t open her room door yet so can’t come and find me. Once this happens it will probably get retired.

ladygindiva · 30/05/2022 21:15

My twins are 5 and we still use one. No one else's business.

SunshineAndFizz · 30/05/2022 21:16

Our DD is 2yrs 7mths and we still use one. She's still in her cot - loves it there although moving her to a bed very soon.

Plus, even when she does move to a bed, our door handles are high up with it being an older house and she can't reach them to get out (or would you keep her door open?!)

heavyistheheed · 30/05/2022 21:17

Someone I know still uses one in their 13 year old daughter's room.

Wait. What?!
That's not okay.

TambourineOfRepentance · 30/05/2022 21:17

It doesn't do any harm I suppose but it seems a bit pointless.
If they really need you, they will shout. At three, they'll get up and find you.

AperolWhore · 30/05/2022 21:18

@maythe4thbewithme it depends on the brand of the pad. You can adjust the sensitivity so they can be used until they can get out of the bed on most models.

WhatsHoppening · 30/05/2022 21:20

I don’t find it weird for toddlers but children age 4+ I find it really bizarre. Unless you’re in an enormous house with actual different wings surely you will hear them or they can come find you? Using a baby monitor for a school child does seem odd.
I wouldn’t judge someone though if they felt more comfortable, the only slightly tedious thing are parents who are v distracted by the monitor, constantly glancing at it and run up at the slightest move (when they are above baby age, no SEN etc etc so no need).

Phos · 30/05/2022 21:21

We used one for DD until she was almost 5 because the layout of the house (plus keeping her door closed due to cats) meant it would be difficult to hear her if she called out in the night.

Now she knows to get up and come to us if she needs us. And the cats sleep in her room.

saraclara · 30/05/2022 21:22

I can see the point in audio ones for older kids, but I'm uncomfortable with video ones for older kids. At some point parents need to recognise that their kids are entiteld to some privacy, and I think that constant videoing in their bedrooms crosses a line beyond toddlerhood.

RosieRooster83 · 30/05/2022 21:22

I know someone who still has one in their 9 year old sons bedroom.

Nosetickle · 30/05/2022 21:22

How is it really anyone else’s business?

RosieRooster83 · 30/05/2022 21:23

orwellwasright · 30/05/2022 20:21

Someone I know still uses one in their 13 year old daughter's room.

😳 that's just completely inappropriate
