Gemma

I used to have a set of books about a girl called Gemma who went to dance school and I wanted to be her

Arnaquer · 29/05/2022 21:23

Or was it Gemma and pony club?

Norachance · 29/05/2022 21:40

Lucy because The Lion the witch and the wardrobe or Charlotte.

caringcarer · 29/05/2022 21:54

As a child I loved gymnastics and so would have liked Ludmilla or Olga.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 29/05/2022 21:56

Elle

CoralBells · 29/05/2022 21:58

As a young child I told my mum I wished she’d called me Pasty. As in Cornish, not pale complexion.

I’d misread the name Patsy.

It’s odd it never occurred to my parents to choose Pasty 😂. I do still like a pasty though, cheese and onion mostly.

Samantha

It felt so glamorous to me back in the late 70s, in comparison to my own name which is solid and sturdy 😂.

There was a Samantha in my older sister's class who had lovely hair with clasps in, and she was even allowed shiny patent school shoes, so I guess that's where it stemmed from.
My mother was a no-nonsense type who had my hair cut short, and made me wear brown Polyveldt shoes 😳

Greenkitten · 29/05/2022 22:18

Betty. Child of the 80’s so would have been an odd choice for my parents who picked the number one name each year for their kids!

MisguidedSheep · 29/05/2022 22:22

@Maireas did your Tiger Lily live in a pagoda in the wood. I think I remember her....short bobbed hair and had a wand????

Crikeyalmighty · 29/05/2022 22:24

Naomi- and I'm not Jewish- just felt nicely exotic!

RebeccaNoodles · 29/05/2022 22:28

Catchfire BlushBlush
I came across it in some kids fantasy type book which I've never found again though would love to track it down

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/05/2022 22:30

Generally anything that wasn't a song title. At different ages it was different names depending on what I was reading or watching so Heidi, Darrel, then Mary as in Ingles) as I got older I wanted to be called Sandy ( which is a song but it was sung by Danny Zuko so is cool)

SteggySawUs · 29/05/2022 22:30

MatildaJayne · 29/05/2022 18:51

I wanted to be Katy. My own name was a bit old fashioned and hasn’t reached granny chic, a bit like Mary or Marjorie.

Snap! I have a generationally wrong name that has not aged well and is not granny chic. I've always wanted to be called Kate. Timeless and beautiful.

This feels like a start of a new thread 😂 I had to wear a massive skirt with flares to school and "clod Hoppers" as they were called, just the cheapest shoes in the world..

Carlotta the name of an exciting girl in the Enid Blyton book Mr Gallianos Circus . Also Kizzy from the book and tv series about the little Romany girl .

Alocasia · 29/05/2022 22:35

I was DESPERATE to be called Lizzy.
I was also evidently too stupid to realise that this would have easily been possible to implement, since my middle name is Elizabeth 🙄

User310 · 29/05/2022 22:37

I had several I would flit between.
Lucy
immy (Imogen)
harmony
Emma.

MumThatsNotFair · 29/05/2022 22:43

I was desperate to change my name to Ocean when I was around 11. DaffodilBlush

😂 My school days were hideous, thanks to my mother's refusal to buy me anything she considered frivolous or "faddy".
Not only did I have to have short hair and Polyveldts, my school bag was an actual canvas army satchel 😳.

It's funny, my sister and I (now in our 50s) have grown up entirely differently in response to our upbringing. Dsis surrounds herself with frivolity to compensate for all that we weren't allowed. I, on the other hand, find it incredibly difficult to buy myself anything which could be deemed 'unnecessary'.

Anyway, sorry to derail. There's definitely another thread in there somewhere.

WhenTheNightFalls · 29/05/2022 22:45

Mia. Just because I have always loved the name.

ThatNewGirl · 29/05/2022 22:46

I had a friend called Tracey who's name I loved it seemed so modern, also sisters on my street were called Emmeline and Francesca nn Emmie and Frankie I thought their names were amazing.

I also read a book aged about 6 and fell in love with the name Phoebe although I read it as Phobee, I didn't like it as much when my Mum told me how to pronounce it.
