For me it would have been an animal name
Wolf
Eagle
Striker (bike)
Jess/Jessica

My best friend wanted to be called Poppy. (and often made me call her this).
I wanted to be called anything but my name (there were 7 of us in our class with the same name not all spelt the same think jane/jayne or Sarah /sara).

devildeepbluesea · 29/05/2022 17:25

I thought the name Tina Medford was the most glamorous name ever (80s).

Can’t stand the name Tina now 😂

mycatisannoying · 29/05/2022 17:26

Angela (70s/80s child Blush)

TellerTuesday · 29/05/2022 17:33

Six (like the best friend in Blossom) or Topanga (Boy Meets World)

lop32 · 29/05/2022 17:35

Jessica, although I like my name (which has been mentioned on this list).

Derrymum123 · 29/05/2022 17:35

Britt or Pippa, I had those amazing little dolls in the 70s. Britt was absolutely stunning.

SunnyLobelia · 29/05/2022 17:36

Sage.

Also Jinny as I was a huge Jinny Manders fan.

One of my school friends changed her name to Wednesday. She absolutely rocked it.

SunnyLobelia · 29/05/2022 17:42

Oh yes and Brooke! Because I loved Brooke Shields. (And for a brief moment in my teens looked like her. Sigh. Much fatter now)

Maireas I also wanted to be Cordelia because of Anne of Green Gables! I loved the name Diana too at the time.

Also remember when I was about 6 that there was a girl in my ballet class called Candy, I thought it was the most beautiful name I’d ever heard!

At secondary school after reading A Merchant of Venice I was obsessed with the name ‘Nerissa’ and remember my friend would call me Nerissa and I would call her Portia. We were strange!

Great thread OP!

I nearly called my lakeland terrier Portia. When I went to pick her up, I decided it didn't really suit her, and called her Lola instead. It suited her much better.

She'd changed a hell of a lot between 5 weeks and 7 weeks old.

ShinyMe · 29/05/2022 17:44

I told my teacher when I was about 7 that I'd changed my name to Chrysanthemum. She said my mum needed to write a letter if I was going to be called it in school though, so it never happened.

ConfusedByDesign · 29/05/2022 17:46

I wanted to be like Darrell Rivers and loved that name.
Then someone mistook my name to be Sarena and I was so sad that wasn't my name and wondered if there was any way I could change it.

Rachie1973 · 29/05/2022 17:46

I liked Emma. I was supposed to be Emma but they changed their mind last minute lol. And I was one of 4 Rachel’s in my class.

as an adult I’m quite fond of Rachel.

outshinethemorningsun · 29/05/2022 17:47

I really wanted to be called Leanne when I was younger. No idea why!

weegiemum · 29/05/2022 17:50

There was a girl in my primary school class called Elizabeth Cameron. I thought it was the most beautiful name I had ever heard and I wrote it inside some of my books to pretend it was me.

My mum was quite upset when she found them.

I like my own name now!

NotYourOscarSpeech · 29/05/2022 17:52

Jennifer - no idea why, I just loved the name. Always said I would call my daughter Jennifer. Now it seems a little bit dated although I still like it

Love Cordelia, Nerissa and your childhood friends "name" Portia.
Oh and thankyou and I really mean that.

Isabella.

Antarcticant · 29/05/2022 17:54

Antoinette. I thought it was the prettiest name in the world. I wouldn't choose it now - not that I don't like it, I just don't think it would actually suit me.

Redouble · 29/05/2022 17:57

Charlie, or Frankie, something unisex. My actual name is very girly and I'm not! Really dislike it. And it can't be shortened- also no middle name.

I guess I can't just start asking people to call me a different name, it'd make me look weird.

AdalineStephen · 29/05/2022 18:00

Vienetta- as in the ice cream! I would've been about 6 😂

I loved Alicia from the books! Not so much now I’m reading them with dd, she was a right horrible little Madame. I always used to name my pretend babies in stories etc Alicia but then my friend told me I was saying it wrong! I say Alisseeaah. But apparently it was supposed to be Alisha? I don’t know! Darrell was pretty cool but I knew loads of boys named Darrell/Daryl.

grannycake · 29/05/2022 18:01

Ariadne. No idea why

Georgyporky · 29/05/2022 18:02

I used to hate my name - especially when it was abbreviated.
There were 5 of us in just one class at Grammar School.
I started calling myself Janey for some reason, but it didn't last.

I was well in my 20s when I discovered it meant something really nice in a foreign language, & it didn't seem so bad after that.

@NotYourOscarSpeech
I think Jennifer is a lovely beautiful name, hope you get to use it somehow.

Jessica or Sarah because those were the most popular names in my suburban school in the early 90s and I felt very out of place with my immigrant (but pretty) name.
