To think that the partygoers at Downing Street should be sacked

Until I read the Sue Gray report today I was, frankly, fairly 'meh' about the whole thing, but it's appalling isn't it?
The Head of Ethics, Helen MacNamara, taking a karaoke machine to a party. Martin Reynolds, a high level civil servant (due to be our next ambassador to Saudi) boasting on WhatsApp about 'getting away with it'. Vomit on the walls. Cleaners and security staff abused.
I don't buy the blaming of Johnson (though I believe he should resign). They are all adults, and many were probably in the job before he came along.
I'd sack them and take away their nice pensions.

To say one is ''sick of hearing about it'' re. the Downing Street parties is just sweeping past errors under the carpet. Where do you stop if you take that attitude - what about Nuremburg etc.? People need to account for their actions and behaviour.

It would be bad in normal times - in a pandemic unforgivable!

Please don't anyone feel stupid for following the rules, I did too! And I'm glad I did.

I'm also glad I followed the rules. I'm a decent person who tries to do what I consider to be the right thing. Nothing to be ashamed of there.

Have been telling my youngest that not everyone lies like this lot.

I hate them, it isn't about policy/politics - I hate them because they do not deserve to be in charge of Britain.

There is question that Johnson was saved from further prosecution because it was his home address and he didn't host.
That screams deliberate to me, he's throwing his underlings to the lions and get again will live to fight another day.
Alegra thingy resigned in tears for just laughing with embarrassment at the thought of defending this.

‘Operation Save Big Dog’ wasn’t it?

G0forit · 25/05/2022 22:32

The Head of Ethics, Helen MacNamara, taking a karaoke machine to a party. omfg! It was the Bullingdon Club meets the Nag’s Head karaoke party in Downing Street whilst so many people were dealing with painful and impossible situations.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2022 22:32

My ds2 texted me tonight ' the government are taking the piss out of us again'
sums it up for me!

How does this explain drinking until puking and staying up to 4am

they were hammered and one of them Martin guy? said ‘he’d got away with it’

Why would it need to? People react differently when under duress. Some want to blot it out.

valadon68 · 25/05/2022 22:34

And of course now we suddenly have a windfall tax on the energy giants which was 'never off the table' and probably on the cards all along...

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2022 22:37

Well, 'operation big dog ' worked!
The younger staff were fined and the report wasn't hard hitting enough to bring him down.
We've all been stitched up and he can carry on.

MayorDusty · 25/05/2022 22:38

If course we do Valadon, that's what you do with the peasants, throw them some scraps.
The sad thing is they aren't wrong. Enough are desperate and have no choice and enough are weary so give no fucks.
Lean and keen.

I’m not following

I get if you have to attend something then go

But it sounds like they were loving it, getting hammered, puking and staying over

no one made them, I find the excuse pathetic tbh

Badger1970 · 25/05/2022 22:44

It's a shit show. That can't be denied.

But sadly there is no alternative until Labour sort themselves out and get rid of Keir Starmer. I personally feel that the failings of the Labour party to see an open road ahead of them is almost somewhat more disappointing than these rather tragic looking office parties.

And all this talk of "The Rules" - jesus wept. More fool those who followed them.

Baggyeye · 25/05/2022 22:45

No one made them but someone should have stopped them from doing it! Their boss perhaps?!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/05/2022 22:48

I’m a civil servant (big department) and we cannot drink on the premises. Been in place many years. As it should be

Yes me too. Booze not even allowed in the building I don’t think (although obviously no one would know if it happened to be in your bag, say if you’d bought a bottle at lunchtime to have with your dinner at home).

I don’t think junior staff should have to resign. They were to some extent relying on the example and say so of their superiors. But anyone in a position of responsibility, decision making etc. should resign

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2022 22:51

Badger1970
Please don't call the ones who followed the rules ' fools'
What choice did we have ? I know that some didn't, but most people did and tried their best. They really thought it was for the best and didn't want to catch it or pass it around. As we were advised to do on a daily basis!!
I agree that the Labour Party need a new leader though.

Several have testified that Johnson put them under economic duress…threatened their jobs and careers if they did not go to the parties.

Not necessarily. You never heard of drowning your sorrows then? Not everyone getting drunk is living it up.

whereamu · 25/05/2022 22:56

So the next thing that needs to happen is Johnson investigated for workplace bullying surely.

I’m getting driving for an eye test vibes from this. I doubt it. They were partying it up.

Blinky21 · 25/05/2022 23:01

Yep they should all be sacked regardless of grade, they all knew what they were doing

butimjayigetaway · 25/05/2022 23:02

Why weren't they scared of covid?

Absolutely

RishiRich · 25/05/2022 23:06

It's disgusting and the PM should resign.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 25/05/2022 23:06

butimjayigetaway · 25/05/2022 23:02

Why weren't they scared of covid?

Presumably because they’d already spent most of the day working together in close quarters anyway.

Twillow · 25/05/2022 23:07

If it was in no 10, Johnson should bear the responsibility. Too many people have already been thrown under the bus for his poor ethical leadership.
