No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away

YABU - what are you talking about?

I'm so sorry for all the losses on this thread. While it's lovely to think of a beloved author or long-passed grandparent this way and remember, it does nothing for the raw grief and pain of a very close loved one's death.

It's not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere would much rather you weren't doing it.

Seems appropriate on this thread Grin

I love that quote.

There is freedom in living a life which is vexatious to others Grin

I rather adore AIBU - this is a first for me that a TP thread becomes such a bunfight!

The intention of posting this thread was not in any way to

  1. laud Hitler
  2. cheapen or denigrate anyones grief
  3. mock anyones belief system
4.sell hallmark cards 5.ossify creativity by canonization of late authors

or any other of the various crimes imputed to me

but to commemorate the 25th of May that many fans of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams use to remember two authors who books will be enjoyed and creativity will be remembered after their deaths.

I will admit to having made it a smugly self referential cryptic posting, with no ´Trigger warning - may contain literary references/relate to topics and authors you have no interest in´- mostly because the reference and use of the 25th of May is about a group of people who quietly remember something important.

Its been really interesting reading what this means or doesnt mean to a lot of people - Im afraid I may have been on MN too long and remember previous threads where posters would revive their TP usernames and post a bit of cheery nonsense so had meant it in a lighthearted spirit

For me personally - its a day I along with many others use to donate and focus fundraising for research into the condition - and to think about the challenges faced by people and their families living with memory loss, cognitive decline and deteriorating function.

Mmm hmm

Didactylos · 25/05/2022 15:28

well, yes ....🤔

Though I think the Hitler/Stalin etc discussion is fascinating
because what is the alternative - Pol Pot and year Zero?

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 25/05/2022 15:29

I didn't realise what the thread was about when I posted hence the Hitler comment.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2022 15:29

I do believe that if someone remains in your head and your heart then they aren't fully gone. The alternative is unbearable really.

JaneJeffer · 25/05/2022 15:31

Yes but that's only true of loved ones @SoupDragon

Didactylos · 25/05/2022 15:32

I thought it a great comment JaneJeffer - its certainly had me thinking today

You forget the rest. And presumably they’re remembered by their loved ones.

JaneJeffer · 25/05/2022 15:36

But @Blossomtoes I don't think that's true for everyone. Some people have had awful horrors inflicted upon them and probably even the death of the perpetrator won't erase that.

It's been an eye opener @Didactylos! Almost an Ank-Morphian bunfight!

Almost an Ank-Morphian bunfight!

That's an open goal... Sausage inna Bunfight.

@BenCoopersSupportWren

Thing is, Pratchet's not that funny.

Really? Thanks for letting us all know. I guess when we spontaneously laugh at his stuff, we're just objectively wrong?

Is that how it works, Oh Great Arbiter of Humour?

While we have you, can you tell us all what IS funny?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 25/05/2022 16:07

ChagSameachDoreen · 25/05/2022 08:10

All this insider-joke Pratchett bollocks us just unfathomably lame.

Insider? 😂
Because his books aren't easily available in many formats and already well known to millions eh?
This is clearly a thread for fans yes, but its hardly a secret society.

I just want to thank you for posting this thread OP, I'll admit to having a bit of a cry earlier at all the sentiments of love towards Sir Pterry and loss others had felt and to the sense of loss that we won't get to inhabit any new areas of the discworld and I hope one day someone else, like Neil Gaimen perhaps, picks up the mantle I think he would be more than able, didn't realise today was that day though but I'm unlikely to forget again but I will wear the lilac next year
