I read that it takes your generations for your name to die out which does ring true in a generic human being way - ie if you’re not famous in any way. In Mexico I think they try and keep the names of previous generations going as much as they can with altars and photos to remember them

I think the sentiment is a bit weird. Because the person did die. Even if you want to frame death as a transition to something else like that, the person being grieved for did die.
