Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

It is as well the milder 1 in 100 strain death rate

Gilmorehill · 23/05/2022 21:57

This is a joke surely. Not funny and not original.

fatfrenchprick · 23/05/2022 21:57

No, never again. I refuse point blank to do anything like that ever again

bellac11 · 23/05/2022 21:57

Whats its real name?

What use would a mask be when it’s spread by skin to skin contact? Just don’t rub yourself on people and you’ll be fine.

Yes! For once I'm ahead of the game and already taking appropriate precautions! #proud

No one is calling for full lockdown

Wait ...

Surely putting in a few light touch mitigations and asking people to limit indoor mixing and close contact would help?

After the damage caused by what these turned into during Covid, they're not "light touch" any more (if they ever were)

In other news, apparently there were a couple of cases of Lassa Fever in the UK in February: news.sky.com/story/lassa-fever-uk-detects-two-cases-of-ebola-like-virus-that-can-cause-vaginal-bleeding-and-deafness-12537596

Good job nobody thought to start a thread on that isn't it?

Yes. Lockdown right now. Masks, social distancing and an immediate ban on monkey nuts.

Well done.

It’s spread by skin contact not aerosol, I believe.

It can be spread by large droplets at very close quarters, as well as physical contact.

So nothing like Covid which was driven by aerosol droplets.

Either way the general population is about as likely to heed another lockdown as it is to sprout wings and fly.

Gizacluethen · 23/05/2022 22:25

Just stop touching strangers? Maybe if neurotypicals were more aware of people's personal spaces then this wouldn't keep happening.

..I kid obviously.

MiseryWIthAStent · 23/05/2022 22:25

What would a mask do for monkey pox??

GoldenOmber · 23/05/2022 22:26

We would obviously need to tailor the measures properly for monkeypox.

Like: rule of 6, but only one gibbon permitted.

0pheIiaBalls · 23/05/2022 22:28

And it's a fuck that from me.

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
Mummy called the doctor and the doctor said,
No more monkey pox jumping on the bed.

Four little monkeys etc etc

Nah, there's a Jubilee weekend to do first. We could have 34% of the population with the infection and they'd still wait until afterwards. Probably a couple of big races on the calendar as well. Herd immunity, you know.

oh here we go. The hysterics have started about how the selfless, virtuous ones want action now. This idiocy never ceases to amaze. In the meantime someone starts the zillionth thread about the cost of living crisis and how many deaths that is going to cause. Yet dim witted people still fail to make the link between restrictions idiocy and the inflation iceberg.

Onwards22 · 23/05/2022 22:40

Monkey pox is not an STD.

Wearing a condom will not reduce your chances of catching it (although still do wear one for other diseases).

It is in the same family as chicken pox and small pox.

I believe I heard that it is more serious than chicken pox but less serious than small pox.
And we have eradicated small pox with vaccinations which they think if it’s the common strain of monkey pox then this vaccination will already have provided some immunity to it.

People in places like Africa deal with monkey pox all of the time and for us it’s not a big problem at all.

tobee · 23/05/2022 22:53

So here we are, May 2022, with

"things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?"

being described as "light touch mitigations"

adhdforme · 23/05/2022 22:54

Wonder how king until a Monkeypox sub-forum is created on MN 🙄

adhdforme · 23/05/2022 22:54

*how long 🤦‍♀️

tobee · 23/05/2022 22:56

I'd rather the government started doling out Evusheld to the 500,000 immunosuppressed that was approved as a prophylactic vaccine in March in this country. I'm not holding my breath though. From previous straw polls I've conducted, I'd be amazed if anyone on here has heard of Evusheld.

Well if there's going to be threads like this all over hopefully very soon.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/05/2022 23:00

Wearing a condom will not reduce your chances of catching it

I suppose it depends how big the condom is. If you can pull it over your feet, up over your entire body and fasten it above your head I reckon you’ll be alright.

DixonD · 23/05/2022 23:15

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 23/05/2022 20:01

This is a joke surely? You do realise it’s basically a STD don’t you?

I wonder if the “child in intensive care “ is aware of this “fact”?

OP, it’s not spread as easily as CV. Mask wearing won’t make a difference. It’s mostly spread through very close, prolonged contact. There is no need for the same type of restrictions. I liked lockdown though, so I wouldn’t mind if they did!

For every ‘childhood’ illness there will always be a small proportion who suffer complications needs hospital treatment. Monkeypox is no different.
