AIBU to think that the Met Police have "Saved" Boris Johnson?

Just at the very moment when the Sue Gray report on Partygate was about to be released, the police suddenly decided to investigate partying at Downing Street themselves. This was after months of saying they don't investigate historic breaches of lockdown rules. Can't help thinking that they were persuaded to do this to stop the Sue Gray report being released.

The Met then proceed to spend months investigating Partygate offences, thus taking the heat out of the original fury about revelations about lockdown breaches. No doubt this was entirely their intention.

The sum total of the police investigation was one £50 fine for the Prime Minister, for one of the more minor breaches of lockdown rules. Begs the question why he was not fined for any of the other events he attended?

It just smacks of a stitch up, doesn't it?

And Clavinova, I hope Tory HQ pay you well.

If you actually do this for free you may want to take some self reflection upon what kind of person you are, and what you are trying to uphold.

I have come to the conclusion that Clav is not in fact a fan of the Tory party, since they seem to be working almost as hard as Boris on destroying it.

Blossomtoes · 23/05/2022 20:06

15th May - garden party attended by Carrie and Dominic Cummings

That was the 'cheese and wine' meeting not investigated by the police

Indeed. So why wasn’t it investigated? You agree it’s a stitch up @Clavinova?

I think that this is part of Downing Street's problem. They think that very few people care and that as long as they keep going look a squirrel and have a few useful idiots on SM doing the same people will forget.

Except, I bet all those people 'appalled' by Johnson will still be voting Tory first chance they get.

Not so many did in the North Shropshire by-election and that was before a lot of this kicked off.
Not so many did in the local elections.

Wakefield and Tiverton will be interesting and I live in hope.

The time for the dear old Met to have shown what they're made of was when beer fridges and suitcases with clanking bottles were dragged into Downing Street right under their noses.

Unlike most of us, they have coppers crawling all over Downing Street and did the square root of sweet fuck all.

PestorPeston · 23/05/2022 20:13

FFS Clav, you mean that my illegal wine meetings with BFF would have been just dandy if I had not had a dairy allergy?

In real life, we (and the dogs) wandered around the local sports field with plastic glasses of wine and occasionally bumped into the local ASD young adults from a local house.

The thing I'm most surprised about though was that they had to bring their own booze. Can't believe we weren't rooting the bill.

I’ve only ever voted Labour or Lib Dem, but I’m not the sort that throws around insults like ‘Tory Scum’ or is steadfastly partisan.

I think the referendum was a misstep, but also that David Cameron came across as someone working hard to do his best for the country.

Ditto Theresa May. She had an extremely difficult role and, though certain choices angered me, I never doubted that she took the office seriously and was doing what she thought best for the country at the time.

Both of them absolutely took their role and the office seriously.

I did not like Jeremy Corbyn but, for the most part, he seemed to have integrity.

Boris Johnson on the other hand is completely irredeemable. Ignoring his personal life (which is generous of me), he’s a lazy, incompetent, pathological liar who doesnt give a shit about the office of Prime Minister and seems to hold 99% of the country in utter contempt. The rule breaking and lying to Parliament absolutely bothers me and he ought to be ousted.

I’m normally one for preaching the importance of constructive dialogue with the other side of the isle, and if you still support the Conservative Party generally, fair enough but still supporting Boris Johnson? Your standards must be in the gutter, and I have no interest in hearing your negative opinions on any other politician - you cannot back this man and expect to have a shred of credibility.

ITV news are leading with a picture that looks a lot to me like any regular essential work meeting, would you agree?

Who knows? I'm waiting for Sue Gray's report. Is saying farewell to an employee counted as 'essential work' when you are the PM? How long was Boris Johnson there for? A few minutes? Was he socially distanced? Did the others stay on much longer and not go back to work, whereas he did? Keir Starmer, former DPP and man of integrity, seems to think a beer and a curry is 'regular essential work' - maybe he's right? Is posing with a football shirt 'essential work' as well? Perhaps it is.

Bojo really is the scum of the earth, as are his supporters, if you have kids, look after them but according to more gossipy sections of the media he can't even look after his wife.

Alexandra2001 · 23/05/2022 20:23

@Clavinova The difference here is that if Starmer is fined, he will step aside, as will Rayner.,,, and rightly so.

Our leaders or those with designs on power must not be above the law.

In stark difference to Johnson who clings to power like a turd to a dirty toilet.

DuncinToffee · 23/05/2022 20:25

Clavinova could you copy and paste the Covid laws and regulations that applied at the times of these events?

@Clavinova Now I come to think about it I have been to several work meetings today and if someone had taken a photo, they could have caught me looking exactly like Boris does there. Have you also been to similar work meetings today?

jgw1 · 23/05/2022 20:31

@Clavinova We have talked before about what the role of the Prime Minister is, and something that we did not discuss was whether or not he is responsible for arranging meetings like a diary secretary. It is being reported that he arranged a meeting with someone called Sue. Is it normal for the Prime Minister to be responsible for arranging meetings?

Alexandra2001 · 23/05/2022 20:34

Wouldn't normally agree with Baker.

That's his own fault - he has no choice. Starmer called teetotal Rishi Sunak a 'guilty man' for a minor breach of the rules with a diet Coke/orange juice. Starmer said Sunak 'had to go'. Ridiculous.

Nicola Sturgeon breached her rules two or three times - she was lucky not to be fined:

No they haven't. Johnson is PM because of Brexit, dubious finances and because he has surrounded himself with half rotting lettuce leaves in the Cabinet so he can try and look better by comparison. If any of them appear to be gaining a positive 'image' he cuts them off at the knees. Look at him sending out Zadawi to be humiliated this weekend.

Johnson is a truly vile and dark individual and he has not been saved by the Met. He is damned in the oldest sense of the word. I suppose it is possible that the 8% swing required to oust the Tories won't quite arrive in one term, but there are at last some genuine noises about a coalition in opposition which should sort it.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2022 20:46

18 parties in Downing Street. Johnson attended 6 - but investigated for 2.

Blossomtoes · 23/05/2022 20:57

The issue isn’t whether drinks were alcoholic or not, it’s about breaking covid law. Sunak was guilty of that, it’s far from ridiculous.

I've been called every name under the sun on the Brexit board (despite being a polite poster). Several of the posters on this thread turned the other cheek (or stood by and cheered) - I don't need a lesson in moral authority thanks. And I certainly don't call other people 'scum' - so I won't be voting for Angela Rayner.

Blossomtoes · 23/05/2022 21:01

No shit, you astonish me @Clavinova! 😂

Alexandra2001 · 23/05/2022 21:02

@Clavinova No Clav, we simply cannot have people governing us, if they themselves cannot keep the laws they make.... be that KS or BJ, nothing to do with who calls for what.

NS wasn't found guilty, its not "luck" thats not really how the law works.
