Dresses dresses dresses everywhere!!!!

So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

This is my favourite dress at the moment. I wear it with a sloppy jumper or a black leather jacket. I'm 5'6", size 8-10 and 57.
I absolutely love it.

That’s lovely!

62 here, 5’ 2 and not slim ! Am at work today in my midi dress , so comfy and I’ve actually taken my tights if for the first time this year! It has a waist and is not overly voluminous although quite flowing .I feel pretty good and not frumpy. In the winter I wear them with my Docs and get plenty of compliments, keeps me feeling young ( mostly)

Hippychickster · 24/05/2022 12:40

Thank you!

I’m not sure about leggings/dress look. It was a flash fashion about 20 years ago but it looked odd even then.

Tunics with cropped leggings just over the knee look ok.

I just wear spray tan or leg makeup. I don’t have veins but I have very pale skin.

@ChiefWiggumsBoy where do you buy them? Do you get the ones that are 'high waisted'?
Thanks everyone, would love to know where you get these dresses. thanks

I'll try and find and link you to my latest purchases when I'm on my laptop later.

I have bought a couple from Boohoo which was surprising, I thought they'd be rubbish but I love them. A quick look and I've seen a few more I like - dangerous! Those two are kind of high waisted but with a V neck so they're not too matronly!

I've also bought a couple from Never Fully Dressed but tbh they're pricey for what they are.

cherish123 · 24/05/2022 18:16

I love dresses but need a waist band, avoid certain shapes and to be lined.

plumpynoo · 24/05/2022 18:34

I wear the chaffing shorts from the big bloomers co. to stop the sweaty chafing! They are high waisted too so no vpl...
I find that midi to maxi length with a empire line waist is most flattering for my fat tummied pear shape.

keffie12 · 24/05/2022 18:37

59 + 1; I wear a mixture. I wear some lovely dresses, leggings and quirky jeans. I'm a size 14-16. Gone are my days of size 10.

There are some lovely dresses around which aren't old fashioned and can be accessorised to be quirky like I do. I love colours.

Joe Browns is my favourite retail shop which is mainly online with just 2 physical outlets.

Was always told trousers are for horse riding. I wear dresses and skirts.
I do have trousers but not for a dignified going out look.
Skirts and dresses give an air of authority and femininity.

I have an hourglass shape and almost exclusively wear dresses as they suit my figure much better than other clothes. I generally stick to wrap dresses often skater style I suppose it's my signature look now. My boyfriend was quite surprised about how often I wear them and it hadnt dawned on me until then that it was unusual to prefer to wear dresses.

Tigger1895 · 24/05/2022 19:15

I’ve started to take notice of larger ladies on the tv and I’m mags to see what they are wearing. It gives me an idea as to what might suit me.

CountryMouse22 · 24/05/2022 19:16

If I wore one of those floral dresses I'd look like a walking sofa!

GlomOfNit · 24/05/2022 19:16

Slightly odd thread (as it seems to me) since 'dresses dresses dresses' have always been there and some women will never wear one because it's not them. Wear one if you like the look of it, OP. Only nasty people will be judgy and who cares about what random strangers think anyway??

I wear little other than dresses and struggle to find trousers (aside from jeans) that both fit and suit me! Grin Plus I don't like being tight around the waist or the crotch, so dresses - with tights in cold weather, leggings in medium, bare in summer - do me fine. I can't imagine ever not wearing dresses. They don't have to be smart or formal - I mostly live in denim or cord pinafores and Fat Face Simone dresses in colder weather, and tea dresses and those lovely floaty linen tents off of Ebay in summer. Grin

I have to admit I hate most of the dresses in high street stores at the moment, though. Far too many frills, flounces and layers right now and I had hoped the Prairie Jane look would have gone away by now!

MrsMigginsCat · 24/05/2022 19:17

I'm 50, 5'3" and a 14/16 with huge norks. I love a midi or a maxi dress. The ones that work on me are fitted under the norkage and then float down. I bought a couple of perfect ones from Next last summer which I live it at this time of year.

GlomOfNit · 24/05/2022 19:19

Oh and I'm 48, short (5'2") and 14-16.

Dancer47 · 24/05/2022 19:19

I love dresses! I wear them all year round. I love just having one item to throw on and good to go. I used to wear jeans sometimes, but I am no longer thin and think tight jeans look bad unless my figure is spot on, and that ship has sailed.
If you are busty, go for a V neck. If you have a tummy but nice bust, go for empire line. If you are petite and short, not too much material or you will look swamped. If you are flat chested you can look great in anything. If you have a nice waist, get a darted dress to show it off, and so on. We all know how to dress in a dress. 🌻

Frazzledstar1 · 24/05/2022 19:25

I look awful in trousers, highlights my mum tum and wide hips/bum. Dresses are much more slimming if you find the right style for your shape.

Violinist64 · 24/05/2022 19:27

I’m in my mid to late fifties and around a size 14, not particularly tall, with a much bigger bottom half. I still have a waist so loose dresses would be very unflattering. I find that empire line/A line are the most flattering styles for me.

Jackburger · 24/05/2022 19:28

I wear dresses. I'm a size 12, 5ft 6 and 54. I've bought a couple this summer from Zara. Both midi length. First one has no waist but is reasonably fitted around the shoulders/arms and is a green geometric pattern. Works with trainers or flip flops. The other is similar length but has a fabric belt to give it more shape. I did have to get an extra button put on so that I didn't have to have the neckline too high (which makes me look matronly as I'm busty) but equally the next one down is too revealing. Try Hush and Mint Velvet. I think it's key to get the right pattern/fit. I also like jumpsuits and have a couple of those for both winter and summer. The winter one I wear with ankle boots that have a slight heel.

DashboardConfessional · 24/05/2022 19:31

I'm only really wearing them now because there is such a good choice of shapes. My favourite is a plain black t shirt maxi dress with slits at the sides. I look ok in midi shirt dresses but the tiered thing is a no.

There are some great body positive ladies online to.deleting harmful accounts and filling it with these woman was the best thing.and of course, they're stunning.anf makes me think if we'd all grown up seeing these bodies in adverts in programs,in Disney princesses! and as worthy how different our body images would be.
