Dresses dresses dresses everywhere!!!!

So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

I love a dress but I prefere ones that define my waist and boots and I'm definitely not slim 5'4" and size 16 so wrap and v neck suit me. I get definite thigh rub so use my eczema emollient (doublebase) between or cycling shorts depending though winter it's tights. Some really nice dresses out there just need to find the style best suited to your body shape x I admit though I like jeans and tshirts just need to loose a little weight to feel good in them again😀

Mummyto2rugrats · 25/05/2022 10:13

*boobs not boots!

Perky1 · 25/05/2022 10:22

I am 54 years old, size 16 and live in dresses. I have old ones for decorating etc. I haven’t owned a pair of jeans since I was at sixth form college.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/05/2022 10:29

I generally like dresses, but I'd rather wear my 2 man tent than the midi monstrosities in fashion. They're perfectly designed to drown my small bust and waist and chop off my short, muscular legs at the worst point to make me look like a stumpy child playing dress-up in my grandma's 70s hand-me-downs.

I'll stick with my actual 90s vintage that's come back again.

CounsellorTroi · 25/05/2022 10:34

I like dresses but now I’m retired I tend to only wear them on holiday. I recently bought a midaxi length dress from M& S which in standard length is a perfect maxi length on me. I’m 5ft 2 and size 12.

PeachyPeachTrees · 25/05/2022 11:20

I am more of a top and skirt girl usually because I am 14 top and 16 bottom. There are loads of gorgeous flattering dresses in the shops at the moment. I have bought 2 from TK Maxx and one from All Saints and I'm eyeing one up that's in Roman Originals (online) they have loads of lovely dresses. My All Saints dress is viscose but looks and feels like silk and I can put it in the washing machine, what's not to love?!

Br1256 · 25/05/2022 13:20

Can any of you say where you buy your dresses from. Me …size 40” boobs and hips but 37” waist…5’ 4”. Knee length..not midi or maxi.

Thanks jane

This is me wearing my favourite one. The photo was taken last year!

Im 50, very large, and I adore dresses. I accepted my body 10 years ago, had a baby at 44 and now I wear whatever I feel most comfortable in, according to season. I live in 50s style dresses, or maxi, and loudly printed trousers from Shein. It's all about learning not to give a flying fkuck about other people's opinions. At size 24, I get complements all the time. I'd rather be smaller, and I work towards that, but I refuse to hide myself in a sack in the meantime. Embrace dresses OP!

Jojofjo44 · 25/05/2022 16:28

Also, for chub rub shorts and THE BEST tights in the world, buy Snag. They are a revelation.

How do you find Shein?

I was tempted by a couple of their dresses for round the house, but I wasn’t sure if they were legit.

Has anyone tried lightinthebox.com?

Sure.

My favourite for linen dresses: LinenMe.com

My favourite for pretty summer floral dresses: NobodysChild.com

Then I have a combination of high street finds, Whistles sale, LK Bennett sale, Diane van Furstenberg on eBay.

Don’t know what happened to the Nobody’s Child link - but it works if you click on it.

Newbie20 · 25/05/2022 19:28

@cofingalthetime I'm size 22-24 in most clothing thanks to larger than average breasts. I understand the thigh chafing. I recently found snag tights who do cub rub shorts which are made from the same material as tights so keep you cool. So if you find a dress you love and makes you feel good wearing it then buy it and get some shorts. I used to live in dresses although admittedly trousers are more practical. I ended up donating all my dresses except for 2 to charity in October and actually really regret it so I have since bought 3 new dresses from the charity shops. Ultimately wear what makes you feel like a goddess

Jojofjo44 · 25/05/2022 19:30

@IrisVersicolor I find them true to size, and they have a wide selection for even the smallest and biggest sizes. It's refreshing to be able to buy clothes that aren't all floral, I mean I like flowers but.... reasonable postage and prices too. Take a couple of weeks to arrive usually. I was the same initially and only made a small first order, but I order regularly now.

I hear ya. Im a short arse (5’4) with big boobs. Midi just looks wrong - top heavy for and then cuts off at the wrong point. I just have them shortened to the knee.

Ok good, I’ve just ordered a couple of dresses. I just wasn’t sure if they’d look nice in the pic and then turn out to be a Chinese wedding dress from eBay disaster.

Nutellaspoon · 25/05/2022 22:30

I definitely feel like I'm playing grandma in midi dresses. For some reason though u don't mind a midi skirt and top.

The reviews I’m seeing are all super good which is what makes me suspicious. (4.7-5.0).

Br1256 · 26/05/2022 14:17

@IrisVersicolor thanks for the tip about nobody’s child, like some of their clothes but no actual size guide…just 12, 14 etc. I am usually a 12 to 14 m and s do you know if that is similar sizing …

thanks jane

IrisVersicolor · 26/05/2022 14:34

Depends what shops you’re a 12-14 in - sizing varies so much now. I’d just try both.

AggiePanther · 26/05/2022 21:21

I live in linen dresses from kitandkaboodal www.kitandkaboodal.com/styles-c8/ladies-dresses-c9
or their long tunics/tops (with jeans/leggings)
I'm in my 50s and the same size as you.
The best thing about them is they are one size so will still fit if I gain or loose a bit of weight
Oh and these are great snagtights.com/collections/chub-rub-essentials/products/stay-cool-chub-rub-shorts-caramel-latte

Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/05/2022 00:29

Just bought this one in the one day sale
