So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

Love dresses but they have to be skater style on or above the knee. Combined with DMs and leather jacket. Grin

@Shakeitshakeitbaby I must be weird cos my groin and top of my legs get v sweaty and stick together and make it hard to walk, and a rash might come! I've seen those cycling shorts but don't they make you very hot.

Those of you who wear dresses must be in heaven right now!!!! I was looking for a simple blazer, and could not find a single one, I did find a couple of these oversized things, but they make me look massive, and totally out of proportion with this massive jacket and my little fat legs. Then there's either crop tops, or oversized 'bag' tops. I bought some 'bag' tops, I thought thye looked ok, but when I got them home there is literally zero shape to them - just squares of material sewn up the sized. Weird fashion atm

I think you’re shopping in the wrong places. Looking for stuff for a teenager is very different to dressing when older, almost no one can get away with crop tops!

try places like zara, mango, hush, M&S, dancing leopard - they all have great dresses which would suit you

and try roll on deodorant for between the thighs!

cofingalthetime · 23/05/2022 14:47

the trouble is my legs are not the best - well nowhere is the best.

The best style was probably the ones with the shirring at the top, as they disguised the tummy, but then arms were a problem. And sometimes a funny thing happened with the shirring, where it got caught under my boobs - not a good look lol!!!!!

What do you all wear over your arms - does a cardy look grannyish.

I have a green dress in the same style that mn is advertising to me atm. Nice and cool. Covers a multitude of sins!

Dresses dresses dresses everywhere!!!!

I'm a size 20 and only 5 ft 4 and I love dresses. Boho maxi dresses are my fave. Something a bit floaty I can add loads of jewellery to.

I don't actually own black trousers, other than some joggers which are just lounging about trousers really. I do have some nice trousers but none black.

Imogensmumma · 23/05/2022 14:49

I’m size 16 and only wear dresses summer and winter. Pants and jeans just emphasise how short I am and focus on my belly where dresses don’t

I wear chin rub shorts and find it cooler and not as sticky to wear them than no shorts/pants as the keep the sweat away

AmberGer · 23/05/2022 14:49

Age 41 size 14-16, (was a Size 18 up until a few months ago)
I only ever wear dresses! Never jeans or trousers, I don't even own any.
Find a style that suits your shape.
Tea dresses suit me best.

cofingalthetime · 23/05/2022 14:49

M&S were incredibly disappointing yesterday - nothing I had seen online was in the store, it was filled with very boring knitwear and the 'classic' styles. I wonder are they going more towards online.
Zara and Mango -can't fit into anything
I don't know hush or dancing leopard, thanks.
yeah I was in new look - lots of stuff fitted me, I just wasnt sure about any of them. I did try on one dress in next, but I can't find it online now, maybe I'll go back.

I live in boho maxi dresses as soon as it gets warm and have now invested in a maxi dress from a proper shop too. I love long dresses but I don’t follow fashion so...

QOD · 23/05/2022 14:51

53 and dresses in the summer for sure - i tend to wear knee length as am a 16/18 at 5ft but my lower legs are slim in comparision. i have no waist so straight shift dresses or flare out swingy ones are best
I have just had a knee replacement so unfortunately my 8 inch scar or 'my gash' as i like to call it, is on show. doesnt bother me but seems to attract attention

I live in leggings and long tunic tops in the winter

ImAvingOops · 23/05/2022 14:51

I'm a 16 short arse. I found a couple of black tiered maxi dresses, which are fitter at the bust. Not perfect by any stretch but better than all the floral tea dress type things currently everywhere. They were fatface and Oliver Bonas. Also worn with cotton chub rub shorts. The beauty of them for me was that the material was thick and I can go bra less, which is lovely in the summer.

Aboutdamntime · 23/05/2022 14:51

I can’t wear the dresses currently in fashion. I don’t like anything frilly or puffy or flowery. I’m still looking as I think they would be cool and comfortable in the summer. I am going out tonight in the old faithful black jeans!

cofingalthetime · 23/05/2022 14:52

@ChiefWiggumsBoy where do you buy them? Do you get the ones that are 'high waisted'?
Thanks everyone, would love to know where you get these dresses. thanks

Yes cardigans are not stylish, try a shorter denim jacket (Primark fine) in washed denim or white. Or a leather jacket if it’s colder

AmberGer · 23/05/2022 14:52

I only wear full sleeves or capped sleeves, sleeveless look awful on me.
And yes! Loads of cardi's, long ones, thin ones, thick ones, all sorts!

AmberGer · 23/05/2022 14:53

I buy mine on vinted.

NotQuiteUsual · 23/05/2022 14:54

Size 12/14 and I only wear dresses and skirts. It takes time to figure out what suits you though. Dresses can be less forgiving if they cut you up wrong.

jackstini · 23/05/2022 14:54

I'm 49 and rarely wear anything except dresses
Just have a whole range from casual to dressy, wear with trainers, boots, maybe heels for an occasion
Bare legs summer, black opaque tights winter; various jackets and cardigans

I just cba to be trying to match tops and bottoms every day!

orwellwasright · 23/05/2022 14:54

must be weird cos my groin and top of my legs get v sweaty and stick together and make it hard to walk, and a rash might come!

This is pretty normal.

Are you me? I'm the same. I've actually bought some dm sandals this year though

Nothappyatwork · 23/05/2022 14:58

My grandmother was a size 22 in old Money so she’d probably be about a size 16 now and Bless her when she was in a pair of trousers I’ve never seen anything so unflattering in my life.

I do think dresses cover a multitude of sins and cake

Badger1970 · 23/05/2022 14:59

I wear tunic tops and trousers most days.

I have ventured into dresses this year at the age of 51! I've got some great comfy ones from White Stuff, and Live Unlimited.

And I recently got a couple from M & S that are a really flattering shape.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 23/05/2022 14:59

I'm 53 and, like you OP, I feel very matronly in a dress. I definitely suit more casual things. And as for a tie waist/belt - I just look like a sack tied in the middle.

Loose linen trousers are cool and look good.

As for chub-rub, talcum powder is excellent.

blobby10 · 23/05/2022 14:59

I love wearing simple tailored shift dresses with mid-bicep length sleeves for work but can't find any for love nor money on the high street! They all have frills and flounces everywhere or a really low cleavage and/or no sleeves. M & S used to be amazing for these dresses but it seems to be all voluminous styles with frilly cuffs these days - I'm big enough! I don't want a loose fitted dress to make me more shapeless than i am!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/05/2022 15:00

I love the midi dress length but I can't stand

-tiered
-puffed sleeves
-ginormo collars

I just like plainish midi dresses that are neither skin tight nor massively voluminous.
