So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

I'm 40+, 5"8 and a size 16/18. Recently bought a Hobb's shirt dress which I love. As for the "chub rub" - I use Lanacane (anti chafing gel) which gets me through most of the day.
Also works quite well in preventing blisters.

I found (when having to buy another wardrobe) three identical dresses bought from QVC years ago, in lime, mid-grey and cobalt blue. They have a puffball hem which, because it folds underneath, makes deep pockets at the sides. They're slightly gathered under the bust and fall straight down to knee length and have 3/4 sleeves and a deep-ish scooped neckline. Very forgiving material which drapes well and doesn't crease. I tried one on and it fits perfectly.
I'll wear them this autumn with grey tights and ankle boots.
You never know what you find when you keep things for years. They come back into fashion.

Cloud16 · 24/05/2022 19:51

I look dumpy in trousers. Dresses are an easy outfit for me and more flattering.

cakewench · 24/05/2022 20:11

Promise I'm not an overly girly girl nor am I into fashion.

I love dresses. I don't have to think about what goes with anything; they're an outfit, full stop. I wear chub rub shorts (I'm also a 16/18) if it's warm, or leggings/ tights if it's colder weather.

Also, I just think I look awful in shorts.

I'm a 14 to 16 and age 38 and don't wear dresses. I would love to but I always feel frumpy and usually look pregnant due to my severely split stomach muscles. There are some styles I like that I think suit me but I can't find any right now.

Bobbi73 · 24/05/2022 20:14

I bought this dress in a different pattern last year and I love it. I'm 49, a size 12-14 with a really big stomach. It's really flattering and comfortable and it has pockets.

I have this and it is really flattering, but it shrank in the wash, even washed at 30.

That dress is lovely but it just shows it all depends on your shape, as it would (sadly) look hideous on me! I have huge boobs so the neckline would make me look like I’ve got a shelf, and with my skinny arms and legs plus big belly I’d look like a giant blueberry with cocktail sticks poking out!

ClockSpanner · 24/05/2022 20:42

I just wish I could find something large enough in the boob area that then sits nicely underbust or on the right part of my waist to go over my stomach and doesn't drown me because I am also short. Everything I like the look of is so disappointing once over my head! The shops are unfortunately not making clothes designed for short, big boobed, big tummy women.. funny that 🤣

Best ones I have found for decent boob room are H&M wrap dresses or Tesco.

I love a loose linen dress in summer - and I don't care how I look, they are just so damn comfortable. Although I would live in jeans/cords in winter if I could I also like wearing a skirt and tights, and I have a horror of "smart" trousers as I just don't feel comfortable in them. I'm 60+ and not small.

onlythreenow · 24/05/2022 21:15

Love your dress Hippychickster

I could have written this word for word

@Shakeitshakeitbaby I must be weird cos my groin and top of my legs get v sweaty and stick together and make it hard to walk, and a rash might come! I've seen those cycling shorts but don't they make you very hot.

Cycling shorts are the best thing ever under a dress. I wear either tights or cycling shorts and I’m a size 10-12. I cycle to work and it means I don’t need to watch every movement if I’m wearing a floaty dress.

Mediocrates · 24/05/2022 21:58

I’m fat, 41, and live in dresses.

I can’t say I prioritise flattering when I’m shopping, but I find dresses much more flattering on my than trousers - particularly around my tummy. I’m really loving the wide range of styles and colours in the shops just now

kennycat · 24/05/2022 23:15

Dresses are great for speed. Every work day I wear a dress and every work day I’m shocked at how magically I’m dressed in an instant. I laugh at myself that I’m surprised by it 3 days every week!

0pheIiaBalls · 24/05/2022 23:15

I'm 49, size 18 and look like an egg on legs in trousers.

I only wear dresses. I love a wrap dress, or a vampire's wife-style midi/maxi dress. Both are really flattering on me.

I do avoid anything 50s style because they can look a bit costume-ish, and the smock dresses that are everywhere look awful on me - no waist definition, so I look like I'm wearing a sack.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 25/05/2022 00:08

@cofingalthetime

www.boohoo.com/plus-ruched-waist-maxi-dress/PZZ82741.html?color=208 I bought this dress in black and rust in a size 20. I love it. It's so flattering. It is way too long for me!

www.neverfullydressed.co.uk/products/black-abigail-dress-curve-1 this dress in brown size 22. It is sheer in the bodice but lined in the skirt - tbh I like it but I don't love it, they don't even put pockets in their dresses which when they're so expensive I personally think they should. Also, I'm kicking myself because I've just seen another dress I like better on there....

Honestly life is too short to punish yourself for not having the 'ideal' body by wearing boring stuff. Wear what you like. Treat yourself. You'll feel better for it.

Londoncallingme · 25/05/2022 05:40

love a dress, 54, size 16.
whistles or chi chi - always a midi. Must have an open low next - high necks over big boobs looks ‘mumsy’

Numpty1 · 25/05/2022 07:09

I’m nearly 40 and a size 14 and I love my dresses.

I’ve recently found Popsy
They’re amazing! Different styles, really comfy and pockets! And fab patterns.
I also branched out to bright tights to go with them. I haven’t felt this good about my appearance since I was a teen.
you should check out the Popsy frocks & friends group on Facebook. It’s a friendly bunch and loads of photos shared of people in their dresses.

but be careful, Popsys can become addictive! 😂

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 25/05/2022 08:00

I'm 42 and a size 24 and love wearing dresses. Love that they can be smart of casual.

NannaKaren · 25/05/2022 08:27

I’m usually a skinny Jean gal! But piled on weight and loving dresses - I am 61 and wear them with chaf busting long knickers (very attractive but not seen and so comfy)!
if a shorter dress then I wear cropped leggings under them with my flip flops or trainers - I like the linen floaty dresses and other materials but I still get so hot that cotton and linen rule my wardrobe 😊
sorry not really much advice
there but dresses can be your friend go try on more! Look online first 👍

myfaceismyown · 25/05/2022 08:34

Touch of cotton baby powder or any with corn starch in them works a treat preventing the chaffing. Both absorb perspiration. If you do get a rash, Metanium nappy rash cream takes it down over night. Smells clinical but effective.

Violinist64 · 25/05/2022 09:38

I’m another leggings/footless tights under dresses lady. I have lipodoema so my legs are huge. This means I don’t have to stick to maxi skirts/dresses, especially as maxi skirts can make me look shorter and dumpier.

JaceLancs · 25/05/2022 09:57

I’m 58 size 14-16 and rarely wear trousers or skirts
in winter I have a variety of sweater dresses which I wear with opaques and boots
I’m an hourglass and quite short so don’t suit the current long flouncy styles
shirt dresses and more fitted styles work for me
I have black and navy ones similar to this (without a belt) that I wear for work
I have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-linen-striped-v-neck-shift-dress/p/clp60552268?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share
