Dresses dresses dresses everywhere!!!!

So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

I like dresses, but I really don't like the eye-boggling tiny ditsy patterns that are on about 70% of them at the moment; I'd feel like a magic eye picture.

I hear ya. I mean I like some of them but I also like a plain linen dress as an antidote.

Linen Me is my go to linen dress shop for the summer.

I’m 41 and live in dresses! And I’m a wee fattie (5ft 2 and size 16-18)

Noelsjumper · 23/05/2022 18:35

Have a look at popsy for dresses. They have some out there patterns, but loads of more 'normal' designs, lots of different styles to suit each body type....all have pockets...all have real life models in all sizes showing how they style them instead of 7ft models...all can be altered to different length/shorter sleeves etc as part of the service.

They also sell underpops which are excellent for chub rub without adding heat for summer!

Cakecakecheese · 23/05/2022 18:35

I very rarely wear trousers, I'm always in a dress. I don't really shop on the high street though, I like online brands such as Collectif, Popsy, Lady Vintage and Hell Bunny.

I've been trying to find a maternity, or just a few sizes bigger, blazer or summer jacket and I'm really struggling.

SophieJo · 23/05/2022 18:41

I buy the relaxed style of midi dress (almost to my ankles). No waistline and no clinging to my body. I’ve found a brilliant website called Yours which suits my shape!

CaliforniaDrumming · 23/05/2022 18:43

Anyone here a small busted but apple shaped size 10-12? If so, what dresses are you wearing, please? Which are not frilly or flouncy or sister wife?

Pinana · 23/05/2022 18:46

I'm 46 and I love dresses! I'm a size 12-14 and 5'8, small bust. I think there's probably a style for everyone, dependant on their proportions. At the moment I'm liking tunic-style dresses with leggings.

Popsy is all polyester though, isn't it? I find that itchy.

SingleHandSue · 23/05/2022 18:49

Floral midi dresses with a skinny belt, white trainers and a denim jacket are the only thing I feel like I look good in.

I’m 42, size14/16 and 5’3

My favourite at the mo is a cheapy Shein one. It fits lovely.

mam0918 · 23/05/2022 18:49

I hate dresses for two reasons:

1 - Im far to busy/lazy to keep up on shaving my legs, on any given day I might look like sasquatch is camping on my shin. I even had laser hair removal but it still grows back.

2 - I dont want my fanny to fall out... Im the kind of person that can trip over thin air and go arse over tit, and I know I could invest in only wearing pants big enough to cover my arse and modesty but if Im doing that then whats the point of the dress?

Ill stick with trousers and very occasionally in the peak of summer a floor length maxi (paired with granny pants lol).

Rosehugger · 23/05/2022 18:50

I have been a size 18 and dresses were the easiest things to wear. YABU.

Worldwide2 · 23/05/2022 18:54

I really love a maxi dress but at 5ft 3in they are always far too long on me. I really like a jumpsuit aswell but again far too long.

Kool4katz · 23/05/2022 18:59

Size or irrelevant, it’s your shape that defines what looks good on you.

I loathe dresses and skirts. I’ve only ever worn loose fitting trousers for the last 30+ years.

I wore a pretty summer dress from Monsoon when I got married (under protest) but it’s been hanging in my wardrobe for the past 10 years, all alone and sad. It’s a lovely dress but I look like shit in it.

Since having kids and a hernia OP, my tummy is massive and saggy and my bum is flat and relatively small. I used to be an hourglass shape in my youth but now I permanently look 7 months pregnant with big feet and huge chunky ankles, so I wear loose trousers to cover my calves and ankles.

There definitely isn’t any dress out there that would suit my shape!

Haven't bought clothes in ages. Tried on some shift dresses in Next and they were ok so I bought two. Looked at some in Fatface but they were too dear at £50 plus - we don't get much summer. I did try on the prairie sort of look and I looked absolutely ridiculous. I wish I had taken my dd with me because she could do with a good laugh. A 60 year old dolly parton stared back at me in the mirror - the shirred top made my already largish bust look absolutely humungous. I no longer have a slim waist so I went with the best of the bunch.

At least it has kick started me into some kind of diet. Not purely for vanity reasons but because I now get out of breath when I have to bend over and I mean really badly. Not helpful when I mind my 18 month gd!

janj2301 · 23/05/2022 19:18

aged 70, size 20 just been introduced to Popsy, have three dresses from them, I've only ever really worn skirts/blouses before.

Sorry don’t know the answer to that one but “sister wife” made me chortle. So accurate! Especially now the big collars are coming in.

kateandme · 23/05/2022 19:24

I came across in the style Instagram.they had some gorgeous dresses being modelled.anyone tried them or no if they are any good.it was actually nice to seelarger ladies....looking beautiful of course.and wearing designs both made for them but also collections made for smaller but proved they absolutely rocked them too

kateandme · 23/05/2022 19:26

New look have lovely ones online.

mizu · 23/05/2022 19:29

Mostly wear dresses now. 49 and 10-12 depending on the shop!

Love them. Easy to wear.

I do the same, it means my dresses are all season, I wear them with black leggings and Ugg boots in the colder months. Oh, and I’m 55!

Really Anonymous? I have terrible veins on my legs. I wear leggings pretty much all the time with dresses but mostly wear maxi dresses so only the bottom bit shows or I pull them up a bit at the bottom. I’m early 50s.

And I can only wear dresses and leggings now. Trousers are too uncomfortable on my stomach as I’ve had a lot of issues.

Yes, really. It's not something I ever see where I live.

However, I don't live in the UK and I do live somewhere hot, so we all have bare legs in the summer, no matter what our legs look like!

Not original! An often used term on Style and Beauty. My other problem with dresses is I live in a windy part of London, and current dresses have so much fabric in them that they whip around, and I end up flashing people inadvertently.

If you like FatFace, keep an eye on their website as they often have sales on & dresses are usually reduced to around £30 each.

52, size 26, like you OP, I prefer trousers. BUT last year I found a David Napier dress in a charity shop. It’s brilliant. The top is well cut and fits perfectly and the material is gathered about an inch below the bust into three small pleats, before forming a loose high waist and flares beautifully (tactfully) over my incredibly large stomach. I love it. The hem finishes mid calf, I would be swamped by a midi.
Still mostly wear my trousers though

I've never seen anyone over the age of about 5 wearing leggings under a dress!

I wear black leggings under a dress too! Very comfortable and hides a multitude of sins. I'm 54!
