Dresses dresses dresses everywhere!!!!

So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

A dress to a woman is like a suit to a man - vastly improves the appearance.

Depends on the woman, depends on the dress. Often vastly disimproves the appearance!

Please tell me what you do with your legs when wearing dresses. I like dresses but I grew up (old) wearing tights with them. No one seems to wear tights any more. I have old white veiny legs and if I wear shoes or sandals without socks or tights I get very sore blisters almost immediately.
So what is the answer to this problem?!

AmadeustheAlpaca · 23/05/2022 16:01

@CupidStunt22 I couldn’t agree more with you. I can’t stand the horrible shapeless unflattering tents that seem to have been in the shops from before the start of lockdown till now. Looking forward to some stylish clothes in attractive plain colours with a bit of shape coming back into shops for winter. If fashion reflects changes in society, I wonder what the current trends say about us.

StaunchMomma · 23/05/2022 16:02

I'm 49 and bigger than you, OP. I LOVE a dress!!

Think it's about your shape more than your size, really. I'm an apple so a fit and flare dress gives me some shape and skims my tum. They're also great for those with tiny tops and bigger bottom halves though.

Screw what anyone thinks, if you like it, wear it!

Greatoutdoors · 23/05/2022 16:06

Snag tights for chin rub shorts which are cooling, and with a bit of waft up the crock they are cooler than trousers. A midi or maxi dress with those underneath is way comfier than jeans or leggings.

The current styles of dresses smooth everything out - bit of fake tan on the legs (or just a longer style dress) and you’re good to go. I say this as a size 18.

Greatoutdoors · 23/05/2022 16:06

*chub rub, not chin rub 🤣

IrisVersicolor · 23/05/2022 16:07

I’m 51, 5’4 size 8 I wear dresses all the time. I like soft clothes, don’t like waistbands, figure hugging is fine as long as it’s soft, find jeans really uncomfortable.

Winter - tights or leggings and socks with boots
Summer - Birkenstocks or sandals and self tanning body lotion with a pedicure

If your sandals give you blisters they need to be worn in around the house with socks. Mine never do.

TheClitterati · 23/05/2022 16:08

Chamois cream is very effective for thigh rub - they are mainly targeted to cyclists & theer are loads for sale on Amazon. I like the Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream.

I really couldn't wear dresses & skirts all summer without it.

TheClitterati · 23/05/2022 16:08

@Jacopo get some Fit Flop sandals - I've never had any problems with them

Bywayofanupdate · 23/05/2022 16:09

I am 40 and am So much happier in a dress! No muffin top over my jeans, no VPL, no worrying about covering my bum up. Love them!

Fitterbyfifty · 23/05/2022 16:10

I bought this a few weeks ago and love it! Not a dress but really comfy and I can wear it on my bike. Cotton too.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 23/05/2022 16:12

@cofingalthetime I hear you about the dresses...
I'm also 50, and fear the return of the long tartan "party frock" with ruffles and cotton lace. 😱
I bought 2 pairs of denim bermuda shorts, some mens t shirts and some bras last week. That'll do me for summer. Anyone who thinks otherwise can do one. 😹

Minimalme · 23/05/2022 16:13

I hate dresses and skirts and now own none at all.

I love jeans, track pants, dungarees, white t shirts and track pants. All with white trainers.

I hate the feeling of floaty fabric - it makes me feel a bit vulnerable.

@Jacopo you could put a bit of fake tan on them, but wear runners or plimsolls with your dresses and you will be in fashion! It's very in fashion now - white runners with dresses, all the celebs are doing it. You need nice plain white - no logos!

M&S were incredibly disappointing yesterday - nothing I had seen online was in the store, it was filled with very boring knitwear and the 'classic' styles. I wonder are they going more towards online.

Nope, you can't get anything online either! Their marketing department are completely out of step with their stock department.

Things that are 'just out' or 'new season' are out of stock and never to be back in stock again these days. If it's a supply problem then they need to stop advertising the product.

^ Ultimately, this.

Eurgh, I can't bear this trend. I am very bony and have uneven shoulders so these kind of tents hang off me and make me look anorexic.

Echobelly · 23/05/2022 16:26

I love dresses. 45, big stomach and small boobs but good legs. Not a fan of those long, shapeless tiered ones, being only 5ft 1 - not sure they really look good on anyone.

But tea dresses, swing dresses, maxi dresses (as long as not empire line, they make me look pregnant!), prom dresses, I'll wear 'em. I may have to get a new short/mid length summer dress this year if we get much of a summer.

Echobelly · 23/05/2022 16:27

LOL, sounds like I'm not alone on the 'shapless dress' front then!

trilobiterevival · 23/05/2022 16:36

The recent dress trends just bury me, I am slim, middle aged, and remember the slim fitting tea dresses of the 90's fondly. I don't like the cheap looking modern ones much.

I also wanted to ask, are most of the dress wearers SAHMs? Or very urban? Or office based? I've lived semi rural in the past and can't imagine a massive wafty patterned dress out there! I am outdoors a lot and the dam things wrap around my legs or catch on bushes.

When people say this fashion suits women best, dont we say that about whatever the current style is? A few years ago everyone said this about skinny jeans, that there was a pair that suited everyone somewhere, you just had to find it!

I dont agree or disagree, but i have so many questions! Grin

Maxi dresses and “trainer liner” style cropped socks, with trainers or deck shoes. Or tunic & leggings . Any other combo to cover legs is hard work and/or dressy, AFAIC.

PaperMonster · 23/05/2022 16:37

I’m 53 and a size 12. I love a dress!!

Eightiesfan · 23/05/2022 16:38

I only wear dresses, or tunics with black leggings, they are so easy for work as you just put it on, shove on a cardigan if it’s chilly and you’re good to go.

I am also 50 and a bit of a chunk but get my tunics from Joe Browns, my dresses from Lady Vintage, Fat Face and Joanie, who all do bigger sizes.
