So I was shopping at the weekend. For one thing, OMG I had forgotten how exhausting it is traipsing from shop to shop with teenage daughter, and trying on things, and sweating, and and and....
Anyway, SO many dresses lol!!!! Have you embraced the dress??? Being fat and fifty I think I have to be so careful not to look like I'm wearing my grandmother's nightdress... I ended up getting the usual 'black trousers' but did try on loads of dresses. I just think they are not as flattering as trousers but maybe I'm just not used to seeing myself in a dress. I definitely steered away from things I wore as a child in the 1980's - like big round collars and stuff like that. So are you all wearing dresses - talking to the more "mature" ladies - my dd looked incredible in most of them, she couldn't choose in the end!

I'm a size 18 and in my 50's. Roman Originals have got some lovely dresses in at the moment that flatter the older, larger woman without being frumpy - think empire line maxi. Suggest you take a look there.

Funnily enough, I have invested in several dresses in the past month. I'm 53. Decided to get my legs, or at least a glimpse if ankle out, for first time in about 20 years! Sick of jeans. My friend was delighted when I turned up in a dress at the weekend. 😂Also been investing in jewellery, sandals, and bags. I wonder if this us my midlife crisis?

It's good to treat yourself!

I'm 53 and wear dresses most days. I love them.

@PriestessofPing yes yes yes!!!!!!! I was getting all excited trying on some of the flowery dresses, but no, matronly is the only word for how I looked. And the plain stuff is like something a nun would wear - no offence to nuns. Like the square tops I bought and am taking back. Simple, but zero shape.

Yeah I know what you mean about dresses hanging from your boobs then I feel like I'm wearing a bag and have zero shape. At least in trousers I have legs. I think dresses can suit tall people. Oh I dunno, I was losing the will to live yesterday. With so many dresses available I kept thinking there must be something!!!!

Anything that hangs from the boobs or is high or square cut look better on people with small busts and narrow shoulders. Bigger busted/wide shoulders need something v neck, wrap or scoop seck with a band or tie either directly under bust if you are apple shaped or on the waist if pear or hourglass shaped.

Thanks I will look there, I think there's one of those shops in the town where I live, I've never been in there though!

Size 20-22, 5’4, and I love a dress. I mostly wear just above or on the knee, casual dresses with leggings or smarter ones with tights. So comfy, so cute, easy to smarten up or dress down with different accessories. What’s not to love?!

TheClitterati · 23/05/2022 15:38

I'm 54 and I embraced the dress about 10 years ago. I love them! So easy - one piece, look kind of fancy even if casual, good to go anywhere.

I mostly make my dresses though I have a black wrap from Boden and a linen wrap from Gudren Sjoden that are favs and have both done me a few summers now.

I'm hoping to make 3 new dresses for this summer - benefit of making them is they will ALWAYS have pockets.

orwellwasright · 23/05/2022 14:29

I Iove dresses. No waistband. And loads more have pockets now.

This! Just this.

ClaudineClare · 23/05/2022 15:38

I'm fifty mumble and a short arse size 10/12. I love the dresses that are in at the moment, as long as they have a waist of some kind and aren't too garish. I wear them with decent flip flops rather than the ubiquitous white trainers, which aren't really me.

JudgeRindersMinder · 23/05/2022 15:38

Meanwhile there’s a dress lovers’ thread 😂
www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/4550976-show-me-your-lovely-summer-dresses

I’m 51 and LOVE dress. I’ve recently lost a lot of weight and am now a size 18ish. I loved dresses when I was a lot bigger (size 28/30) and still love them. I’ve always found jeans and trousers really uncomfortable as I’m disproportionately smaller in my waist compared to my bum, and I don’t like to wear leggings all the time.
I’m not finding chafing the issue that I used to, but I used to get an anti chafe stick from Amazon to rub on the top of my thighs and that stopped the problem

ReadyToMoveIt · 23/05/2022 15:39

I pretty much only wear dresses. Don’t think I’ve worn a pair of black trousers since I was a waitress aged 16!
I am an apple shape, with huge boobs. It can be a challenge to find dresses that are flattering, but a flattering dress is more flattering than any trousers on me!

EmmaStone · 23/05/2022 15:40

I'm generally a jeans and a top girl, but I do have (quite) a few dresses knocking around too. What I like at the moment is that there really is a dress that suits everyone. Mine tend to be from Cos, as I prefer that more achitectural style, block colours, great fabrics, POCKETS! But also love Massimo Dutti (and sad there isn't one in my nearest cities), and have recently bought from Scamp & Dude.

I find most shopping in actual stores on the British High Street in the last few years just depressing and uninspiring (but don't particularly like the infinite array of items available online, hence I tend to stick to a few brands I know and trust. Means things can get a bit same-y though).

bridgetreilly · 23/05/2022 15:40

Solid deodorant is my favourite anti-chubrub technique.

Blossomtoes · 23/05/2022 15:44

Can I ask why there’s such hatred of viscose? Or rayon as it used to be called. I love it. Polyester is awful but viscose is entirely different.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 23/05/2022 15:46

And Next do some in good sizes, lots in linen/cotton too. Really surpised me how comfortable thier shift dresses are - and I am plus sized, large of bust

CupidStunt22 · 23/05/2022 15:49

ShirleyPhallus · 23/05/2022 14:42

I think there is much less flattering and out of fashion than a pair of black trousers

i think dresses look fab on everyone, midi dresses look really good on women in their 50s who are shorter / larger. Try again, I promise there are some flattering ones!

Out of fashion, perhaps. I don't care about fashion. But black trousers can be extremely flattering as well as stylish.

Most of the dresses that are fashionable at the moment are beyond hideous. Frumpy floaty little house of the prairie milk maid monstrosities or tight brightly coloured 80's vileness.

I don’t understand it either!

Sortilege · 23/05/2022 15:52

I think when you’re bigger than a 12, the key is to choose shapes that nip in at the waist. I’m 46 and a size 14, and I mainly wear dresses, but dresses that flare from the waist, such as maxi shirt dresses or a 1950s shape. I can’t do the prairie look.

ClaudineClare · 23/05/2022 15:53

I am a convert to viscose as well, it washes well and needs minimal ironing. I would not touch polyester though. Yuk.

AnnaMagnani · 23/05/2022 15:54

I pretty much only wear dresses at work and until recently was a size 20 (now a 14). I like that I literally just need to decide which dress I am wearing and that's the outfit done.

I would agree that puff sleeves, round necks, frills and ginormo-collars are doing the larger woman no favours at all. However you can still dig out some stuff that is v-neck and not middle-aged milkmaid.

Thing to bear in mind is that some shops are much more generous in sizing than others and they are your friends. I was still managing to kid myself I was a 16 in some of these: White Stuff, Phase Eight, Gudrun Sjodrun, Thought.

Most of my work wardrobe at one point was print dresses from Thought - internet shopping is much more pleasant.

MiniDinosaur · 23/05/2022 15:54

Shortarse oldie here too!
I’m a recent convert to dresses, as long as they don’t have big collars, founces or ruffles. Or big prints. Try H&M for midi shirt dresses, and Sainsburys TU and M&S for other good options.
i wear mine with a denim jacket and boots, trainers or sandals. My legs are chunky so stick to longer dresses.
you can but anti chafe gel for cyclists online.

Tinuviel · 23/05/2022 15:55

Joe Brown is your friend for gorgeous comfortable dresses. I wear lots of their stretchy cross over style dresses in winter with black tights and shoes and a cardigan. I summer I like the Next linen mix sleeveless dresses as they are comfortable and cool (and don't crease because of the viscose in them!) I also sew, so have made myself quite a few summer dresses. My own view on current fashions for voluminous polyester with frills and gathers is that they are easy and cheap to make but do not flatter anyone!
I'm in my 50s and a size 8/10 but wore all of the above when I was a size 14.

yesthatisdrizzle · 23/05/2022 15:55

The ones I've seen in the shops lately are about as wrong as you could possibly get for my shape and would make me look absolutely hideous.

motogirl · 23/05/2022 15:55

I'm your age and I mostly wear dresses, much more comfortable. I wear leggings and boots with them in winter and sandals in summer (plus shorts underneath if short!£
