to not want all models to look like 'real' women?

beattieedny · 21/05/2022 18:31

Just that really. I am much more likely to buy clothing if the model looks like looks slim. I don't care for the current thing of showing clothes (aside from specifically for plus sized ofc) on fat people. It's not as attractive.
I am a thin person but have been fat by the way.

Ohmygosh I’m so sorry OP. It must be so offensive having to look at those women who aren’t shaped like prepubescent boys wearing clothes in public spaces and on media.

Weird and bitter. How are you insulting models then complaining about the OP? You're the same. @dottieautie

It’s just been a trend to actually pick really ugly women to be models. Ive seen models with noses like a potato, or massively gapped teeth, or shaped like tanks.

I've got a huge nose and 'massively gapped' teeth (the result of bad orthodontics in childhood). I have never seen a model with these features you so tactlessly describe as 'ugly' - but if I did, I have to say I would be delighted that 'someone like me' was being represented.

SomethingToDefend · 21/05/2022 19:57

In the past I would have applauded the use of 'real' looking models in ads but my perspective has changed. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and it may have been triggered by my being overweight.
So now I cringe when I see bigger models being used in ads and worry that we're normalising obesity.

Shamplade · 21/05/2022 20:01

Discovereads

I disagree with you completely.

The more models we have that truly reflect the diversity of human beings, the better. I have worked with people with visible differences and it can be hard when society had narrow views of what is attractive.

what is attractive, by the way, is not set in stone. It is different in different cultures and had differed throughout history. It is a social construction. Therefore I think it is great that there is a movement to help us to shift our perception of what is attractive.

‘nose like a potato’ is a horrible thing to say and says more about you than the models nose.

Sorry to hear that but having only thin models won’t help the obesity issue. It’s a complex and multi layer issue.

Carpy88999 · 21/05/2022 20:04

@SomethingToDefend first up I hope your treatment is going well. I do agree when magazines feature morbidly obese women like Tess Holliday but your average size 14/16 woman on the street should see people who look like them.

Sleepingsatellite1 · 21/05/2022 20:04

The model that was married to David Walliams had a large gap between her front teeth

drpet49 · 21/05/2022 20:04

I agree with you OP. I don’t like how being grossly overweight is stating to become normalised.

repulsive apparently.

@SofiaSoFar

Oh so just because you’ve managed to lose the weight you suddenly don’t want to see bigger models? Right.

Not every advert is that of a larger women is it? If it was, I could totally see your point in reference to normalising being overweight. The issue here is diversity for women.

What about disabled women? They’re hugely underrepresented, would this be “normalising” disability if more of those adverts were shown?

Diversity doesn’t threaten me to be honest. I’ve been slim all my life, seeing a larger lady is neither here nor there, I don’t give it that much thought.

There's no "suddenly" about it. If anything I felt more strongly about it previously.

Carpy88999 · 21/05/2022 20:07

Are catwalk models male and female chosen because of striking features rather than incredible beauty? Glamour and glossy mag models are undoubtedly more conventionally attractive in my opinion at least anyway.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 21/05/2022 20:06

Not to me, I think she looks lovely and I like a strong nose. I just can’t fathom why we wouldn’t want all our young men and women to see people that look like them being represented, I don’t think it’s ‘woke’ I just think we’ve moved on and this needs to move with us. I work in a senior school and several kids have been diagnosed with bowel conditions that may ultimately cause them to have a colostomy or ileostomy bag, how good would it be if there were already models out there with them to get rid of some of the stigma. Airbrushing and photoshopping is the work of the absolute devil in my opinion and to have a grown adult calling people ugly and potato nosed well that is just pathetic 🤯

JoanOfBark · 21/05/2022 20:14

I’m fat but I can’t for the life of me tell what clothes would look like on me when they are on another fat woman because their fat is in different places to my fat.

I’d rather see it on hangers or slim models so I can work out how it’s cut and I don’t risk looking like I’ve bought a circus tent rather than a summer dress.

MsFogi · 21/05/2022 20:15

TeenPlusCat · 21/05/2022 18:40

YABU. I wish they would show clothes on 3 models eg size 8, 14, 20
Maybe at the start of a website you could set your preferred size.
Some clothes translate well up the sizes, and some don't.

This would be great - way less clothes would need to be returned!!

Stravaig · 21/05/2022 20:16

Diversity in all things! Height, weight, body shape, age, ethnicity.

Whitewolf2 · 21/05/2022 20:16

Why can’t we have a selection of sizes, I appreciate seeing people of different sizes in clothes so I can see more easily how it might look on me. To me having extremes either way doesn’t seem particularly useful for the majority

andtheycalledthewindmoriah · 21/05/2022 20:18

Are you slim?

I prefer to see clothes on slim women because they represent me.

But most people are not slim, so clothing companies are going to market to larger women to make money.

MargosKaftan · 21/05/2022 20:18

I quite like it when they show the petite range on petite models. Often the petite range is the same style as in the "normal" range, but cut for small proportions, yet they don't redo the photos on a small person. The curve /plus photos are redone - even if its the same style of dress / top as in the normal range, but petite are rarely photographed on a petite person. Means you have to guess what it will look like reduced down /where on the leg a skirt will hit etc.

GreenForG · 21/05/2022 20:22

Only seems to be a thing for womens clothes, even within the same shop the female models will be diverse but mens very standard.

This is such a good idea - not sure why it hasn’t been done yet!

Agree that models should reflect the general population more.

mycatisannoying · 21/05/2022 20:23

I like to see slim models too ... and I say that even as an overweight person.

Blossomtoes · 21/05/2022 20:26

worry that we're normalising obesity.

We don’t need to normalise it. It seems that if current trends continue, overweight people will be the majority in the UK. It’s normal now. It seems very strange to me that fashion labels alienate a substantial customer group by using models who look nothing like them.

I love seeing women who don’t fit the stereotypes of attractiveness. Andi Oliver looks wonderful - no hair, huge gap in her teeth, overweight and bloody gorgeous.

Grapewrath · 21/05/2022 20:29

yanbu
Shops either use slim models or go for the woke vote by using obese ladies. I’m a curvy size 8-10 and would like to see what the clothes would look like on me. Some of the outfits I see I can’t imagine wearing as the models proportions are so different.

??

Woke these days just seems to mean 'something I don't like'. Are you seriously saying clothes should only be modelled on people who look like you?
