Cheeky Fucker - Group Gift

TulaOfDarkWater · 19/05/2022 18:06

Friendship group of six. One member has a birthday coming up & the other five people decided to get together & buy her a big ticket item.

Site A sells the item for £500 so £100 per person, everyone agreed & was happy with this.

Site B has a deluxe version for £700 so £140 per person, everyone agreed this was out of budget & unanimously decided to go with the £500 option from site A.

Just before the item could be purchased, a member of the group, let’s call her Anne, said she had a 20% off voucher for site B which was due to expire soon & it would be silly to waste it so how about we use it to buy the deluxe version & pay a little extra as birthday girl has had a shitty time of it lately etc.

In the group chat, we discussed:

£700 - 20% = £560

£560 / 5 = £112 per person

Anne thumbs up emoji liked this message!

Everyone agreed they could stretch to the £12 extra & it was decided that we would buy the deluxe item from Site B. The ONLY reason we agreed to this was due to the discount voucher, everyone was happy to purchase from site A otherwise.

Anne purchased the item using the voucher & sent everyone her bank details asking for £140. When this was queried, Anne said the 20% voucher represented her 1/5 contribution & so everyone else owes £140.

  1. Anne knows the reason the £700 option was vetoed in the first place was because everyone - including Anne - agreed £140 was out of budget
  1. At no time did Anne say the 20% voucher was her contribution & the rest of us had to pay full price. Another member of the group had the exact same voucher & we could have used hers if we had known
  1. There are text messages where the group discussed the maths & agreed to £12 extra each & Anne did not dispute this & in fact thumbs up emoji’d it. Her excuse for this is she didn’t read the messages properly, the thumbs up was a mistake / she didn’t do it deliberately / know it was there & she is bad at maths anyway so tuned out!

So am I being unreasonable to think Anne is a cheeky fucker & deliberately mislead us? If we had stuck to the original plan then Anne would have had to pay £100 but this way she pays nothing & the rest of us an extra £40!!

Just to be clear, this voucher was one of those promotional email ones that are sent to those on the company’s mailing list, it wasn’t a voucher that had any monetary value or was a gift to her which would be different & like I said, another member had the exact same voucher which she was happy for us to use instead if we had known this is what Anne was doing.

Or send her the voucher as her payment 😂

Best response of the thread. Do it!

Where do you get the vouchers? can you all get one and all send her one in the post?!

SpaceMaaaaan · 19/05/2022 18:54

Or send her the voucher as her payment 😂

Hahahaha yes all send her a voucher code

Or send her the voucher as her payment 😂

Oh god that would be funny!

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 19/05/2022 18:55

PS id kick her off the group chat then when challenged claim I "didnt look at the screen properly" but I'm petty

Alwayspaintyournails · 19/05/2022 18:56

I am open mouthed… what a cheeky git!

JadeSeahorse · 19/05/2022 18:56

My first thought was to transfer just the £112 as originally agreed.

However, sorry to say that Anne is such a CF I wouldn't trust her with my money at all.

Say you all transfer her £112 each! What's to stop her returning the Deluxe version for a refund and then buying the £500 one and only paying £52 herself?

As a pp suggested, no money transfer now until the gift has been given to the recipient.

KatherineJaneway · 19/05/2022 18:56

Just send the £112. Don't engage but rethink the friendship.

StridTheKiller · 19/05/2022 19:01

Anne has surpassed the limits of Cheeky Fuckery and created a whole new category of extreme pisstaker behaviour.
I give you ... The Cheeky Cunt.

AStar98 · 19/05/2022 19:02

Send Anne £112 and ignore her message. Job done 😬

Gymnopedie · 19/05/2022 19:02

Are her initials RV by any chance? You wait, her phone will be residing in Davy Jones' locker before long.

Dagnabit · 19/05/2022 19:03

Agree with the majority here; tell her you’ll pay £112 or she needs to return it and you’ll buy the cheaper version. Absolute CF - she only suggested the luxury version because she planned to use her voucher for her share and now is playing the bimbo card so you allow her to get away with it!

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 19/05/2022 19:04

@JadeSeahorse makes a good point.

Send her her bloody voucher back and return tbr item.

Buy tbe item with other friends gift (who if I was her I'd send the voucher in place of money) but use someone else's account and tell her you will not be sending money because of your nonsense. She either agrees to send money or shes out of the gift and she can explain why.

Emotionalsupportviper · 19/05/2022 19:05

Unblessed · 19/05/2022 18:08

just transfer £112 as agreed. This is beyond cheeky.

This.

All of you just send the £112.

Tell her to do one - this is beyond cheeky!

WimbyAce · 19/05/2022 19:05

Send the £112 only OR say you have all changed your minds now and send her nothing! Get something else from the 4 of you. Ridiculous she thinks she can get away with paying nothing!

Brefugee · 19/05/2022 19:05

Send 112 and say nothing more. Shut down any discussion as soon as it starts.

PortalooSunset · 19/05/2022 19:06

I'd either pay the £112 as originally agreed, or ask her to send it back and buy option A as a group.
And I don't think I'd be giving her any money until after the gift has been handed over.

Yes I wouldn't rush to send her the money

She's untrustworthy imo

BadNomad · 19/05/2022 19:07

Three of you send Anne £112 and have the other woman forward her voucher code to Anne to cover her share.

KettrickenSmiled · 19/05/2022 19:07

Wouldn't worry about it OP - Anne foolishly gave away her leverage when she paid upfront 😂
I'd send a message on the group chat:
"ha ha nice try Anne - as per (message date) we're ALL paying £112.
There's no reason that 4 of us should pay for your contribution - the voucher was a convenient email freebie, not a direct cost to you."

Make sure she agrees before you send a penny else she can hold the gift and your money hostage.
No she can't.
Unless she wants to lose 4 friends instantly, plus 1 more when the birthday girl is informed where her GROUP present is ...

momtoboys · 19/05/2022 19:08

I actually gasped when I read what she did. That is awful.

Bollindger · 19/05/2022 19:09

This one is easy.
Get the Friend with the voucher as well to EMAIL it to Anne,
Tell her that this is to replace the one SHE used.
AS agree you will all be sending her your share of the price paid for the gift,

Fedupsequin · 19/05/2022 19:10

I am gob smacked!!!

SunshineAndFizz · 19/05/2022 19:11

Very easy - you say she needs to return it or agree to all pay £112. She's being a dick.

FirewomanSam · 19/05/2022 19:13

Oh ohhh I bet ‘Anne’ is my old friend who used to try to get out of buying her round by flirting with guys until they bought us drinks, and then claiming those drinks counted as ‘her’ round because it was thanks to her that we’d got them. Along with many, many other examples of incredible tightness and CFery. She would absolutely have tried to pull this kind of shit and that’s why we are no longer friends.

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 19/05/2022 19:13

All get online, get a voucher and send her four.

Anne has made my day
