Wearing white to a wedding

Hiimblahblah · 15/05/2022 21:30

Went to a friends wedding yesterday, and one of the guests was there in a white dress. I've never seen this before and was a bit baffled by it! I thought this was a big no-no?

Only unreasonable if the bride is wearing white!

Youdoyoutoday · 15/05/2022 21:33

It's wrong!

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 15/05/2022 21:34

Most weddings I've been to there have been guests in white.
Two weddings recently, one I attended, the bride's mothers wore white.
Its not bad etiquette anymore.

Cakecakecheese · 15/05/2022 21:35

Was it plain white? Was the bride wearing white? If yes then that does seem like a very odd choice.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 15/05/2022 21:36

My sister wore her wedding dress to my wedding. I didnt mind because I was CLEARLY the bride, she asked me before and paired it with very non bridal accessories.

Palavah · 15/05/2022 21:37

I find it bizarre. There's just no need - plenty of other colours to choose from.

But, they wouldn't have known if the bride would be wearing white until they seen her, and by then it's too late? 🤔

Just white, no. Pattern on a white background is fine though. I wore a white dress with big yellow flowers to a wedding last year. I was a bit worried beforehand but once I got there it was obvious how non-bridal I looked and there were many guests wearing similar.

The bride and the guest were in white, yes.

I wouldn't care unless it was obviously bridal and twinned with a veil or a train. She may have checked in advance. It's really none of your business

Hold on......your sister wore her wedding dress to your wedding??!! Was this agreed upon beforehand??? 🤯🤯

@Knockoneofftheshelftowin it really is still bad etiquette! The brides mother wearing white is totally different to a general wedding guest wearing white. Loads of other colours to chose from - wear one of those.

There's always one......🙄🙄

Since when was it unacceptable to ask a question about something you're curious about online? 🤨🤨 I'm assuming you've worn white to a wedding, so you're touchy about the subject?

I haven't been to a wedding in about two decades but no I've never worn white. I'm far too fat to get away with a white dress.

There's a ridiculous obsession on MN about wedding wear that I just never see in real life. There's a massive difference between some spurned admirer dressed up like it's her big day and hoping to upstage the bridge and someone just wearing a white dress. I honestly wouldn't give it a second thought.

Somuddled · 15/05/2022 21:50

I've worn white to a wedding and I wouldn't have cared if someone wore white to my wedding. You'd have to be thick as shit to not know who the bride was or to feel that a particular colour could upstage the bride and groom. Not a big deal at all.

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 15/05/2022 21:50

loobylou10.

To be fair it might be in your environment but not in mine.

If you didn't care that's fine, but the bride who's wedding you attended might have? 🤨

I'm with @loobylou10 on this: it's bad form.

GarlicGnocchi · 15/05/2022 21:54

I find it odd. There's no need for it.

TheSmallAssassin · 15/05/2022 21:55

I don't get the outrage, really. How can anyone "upstage" the bride and groom? Literally everyone at the wedding knows who they are and is there to celebrate their union.

cottagegardenflower · 15/05/2022 21:56

I've always found it bizarre to not wear whatever colour, including white, to a wedding. Provided it's not tulle and lace, of course no one will confuse you with the bride. Bloody silly imo.

BetterDaysareComming · 15/05/2022 21:57

I wore white to a wedding once. Didn't realise it was frowned upon until someone asked me why I chose to wear that colour dress.

Unless you're @StrictlyAFemaleFemale and your sister wears a wedding dress to your wedding 😅

Lol whaaaaat?! This is mental!! 🤣

happypineapples · 15/05/2022 21:59

Unless it looks like a wedding dress I don't see the issue. I've never bought a white dress and been concerned that people might think I was getting married in it Hmm
