You know how a lot of men routinely ask why there's an IWD (completely oblivious to the existence of IMD) and say how unnecessary and ridiculous it all is - before being smartly told that every other day is basically IMD?
Well, this is the frivolous TV/hobby equivalent of that. Sport is absolutely everywhere throughout the year and dominating the TV schedules, forcing the rest of the programmes to be cancelled, postponed, moved to another channel where we miss them or, if we're 'lucky', only delayed by half an hour or so.
People - especially men - will speak as though everybody loves it and will ask which team you support. When you tell them you're not interested in football, they'll still persist as to which team you 'would' support etc. Constantly boring on about it, many of them - all through the year.
We Eurovision fans get two relatively low-key semi-finals, which sit there quietly on BBC3 or BBC4 for those who are interested to watch, but otherwise unmentioned; and ONE four-hour evening/night each year. We don't even have the 'Making Your Mind Up' (or similar) televised song selection process any more.
We get that loads of people don't like/don't care/hate it - and that's totally fine. Life would be boring if we all liked the same thing. However, if we're seriously talking about popular hobbies that are culturally forced on to people who aren't interested in them, I could think of dozens that are way higher in their impact on non-fans than Eurovision ever will be.
Incidentally, have you seen all of the thuggery, hatred, misogyny, vindictiveness, in-fighting, aggression, angry tribalism, grudges and other violence that goes hand-in-hand with Eurovision, with fans using Eurovision as 'justification' for their behaviour? No, you won't have done....
